I thought they changed the law and you had to be 18 in the UK?

Nice dress/veil/bouquet

Women commenting that it is perfectly ok for a 16 year old child to get married because of the cultural traditions of the travelling community should give their heads a wobble. It's grim.

Not everybody around the world lives their lives according to your own personal beliefs. Some cultures practice arranged marriages and if it works for these cultures, who are we to judge? Stop looking at things through a western colonial lense.

Lunarlightning · 17/05/2026 13:15

Are you a traveller? If not then do not comment on other cultural traditions.

You’re ok with child marriage? With discouraging girls from getting an education?

That’s what I also find baffling. Is it ok for girls to not be educated and be married off early etc just because it’s “their culture”? Where do we draw the line?

Lunarlightning · 17/05/2026 13:21

I do when it's a judgemental sweeping statement which is offensive to me

I made no statement, I actually posed a question and said it’s not what I would want for my daughters.

If you are offended by that you should probably ask yourself why.

edited to add - if you think my post was judgemental and offensive please do report it.

Regardless of whether she’s 16 or 18, I’m wishing Venezuela and Noah a huge congratulations and very best wishes for their married life. Beautiful girl, beautiful family, Paris is one inspiring mother and wife! 😍 Venezuela will no doubt follow in her mother’s footsteps and be a loyal and loving mother to more beautiful babies. Will follow with interest.

When I first read about this my initial thought was wow she’s too young, but to be honest if it all goes pear shaped she can get divorced can’t she? Does it really matter? They have a truck load of money between them all, they seem happy, it’s a nice party for everyone, who are we to comment? Far worse things happening in the world. They’re hardly a traditional traveller family, although that’s their cultural background, I’m sure she has had plenty of say in it all.

Edited

No, she can't get divorced.

BridgetJonesV2 · 17/05/2026 13:24

What I don't get is that the brain is known to reach adult "maturity" at 25. So how a 16 year old can make a life altering decision like getting married when she can't legally learn to drive or buy a drink in a pub beggars belief.

Would you make the same comment sbout an arranged marriage at 16 within the muslim community?

The government wants to give them the vote!

Don't be so ridiculous. Of course people can comment about other cultures if they don't belong to them.

Just because something is traditional in a community doesn't make it right.

The traveller community has an appalling attitude towards women and towards education per se for both sexes. Making children leave school before statutory leaving age, and in many cases girls not getting any secondary education at all is a disgrace. Teaching girls that cooking and cleaning are all that matters and that getting married at 16 is something positive is a frighteningly backward attitude.

Leorag · 17/05/2026 13:29

I thought her dress looked lovely! They both look at least 10 years older than they are though!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/05/2026 13:29

This thread has taught me something I didn’t know - that child marriage (ie 16) is still legal in parts of the UK.

I find it odd that someone has said Scotland also hasn’t moved to 18 when they’ve rightly banned hitting your kids but there we are.

England getting something right for once!

Lunarlightning · 17/05/2026 13:25

Would you make the same comment sbout an arranged marriage at 16 within the muslim community?

I would.

It’s actually discriminatory not to want the same protections extended to children in travelling, Muslim or any other communities just because of what their parents believe in.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 17/05/2026 13:30

Connies · 17/05/2026 13:23

No, she can't get divorced.

Of course she can. Anyone can. Culturally it might not be acceptable, but she can.

southcoastsammy · 17/05/2026 13:32

She’s a child. Marrying an adult. It’s ridiculous that we allow 16 year olds to marry.

JustAnUdea · 17/05/2026 13:32

Child marriage (under 18) is considered to be a violation of Childrens Rights by the UN. I think people shpuld be allowed to havevan opinion on that.

They’ll be divorced by the time she turns 18 - or does she have to get parental consent for that too???

TallSturdyGirl · 17/05/2026 13:33

MsGreying · 17/05/2026 13:26

The government wants to give them the vote!

A vote is hardly the same as getting married. Especially as for travellers getting married is definitely for life.

TorroFerney · 17/05/2026 13:33

Lunarlightning · 17/05/2026 13:12

It's normal within the traveller community.
It's also none of your business.

Female circumcision is normal in some places, as is forced marriage - that doesn't stop it being wrong.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 17/05/2026 13:33

Well it’s not like she is going to have a job , is it?

lottlecat · 17/05/2026 13:33

Lunarlightning · 17/05/2026 13:25

Would you make the same comment sbout an arranged marriage at 16 within the muslim community?

I would; it’s the married at 16 factor that’s the issue at play, not the community. Nobody is disagreeing with marriage at 16 simply for travellers, they are disagreeing with it for 16 year olds. All of them.

bafta16 · 17/05/2026 13:33

BridgetJonesV2 · 17/05/2026 13:11

Sadly very normal in the traveller community. Women aren't valued, not allowed to be educated past age 11, and taught to be slaves to men cooking and cleaning, and other things that would get me banned from talking about. It's horrific.

Like what? Sounds awful. It's a very odd set of rules. The fighting is horrible

Agree
Domestic violence is rife in travelling communities
Yet some posters in here feel like we shouldn't comment because "culture ".
