To think DH should not have finished my dessert

Mamma47448 · Yesterday 23:29

I bought a tiramisu from a supermarket yesterday. It was maybe 10 cm squared.

DH doesn’t usually buy desserts, he prefers to make them fresh. So I buy for myself and offer him some and sometimes he says yes. I think of them as mine though I’m usually happy to share. We don’t have a dessert every night.

I ate about 20% of it yesterday - it was delicious but it’s pretty rich and few spoonfuls are enough. I cut another 20% today after dinner for myself. I reminded DH we had tiramisu if he wanted some.

Baby was crying so I rushed through the tiramisu and went to settle them. I came back to find the rest of the tiramisu had gone! DH said I had eaten “half” (!) (Tbf he probably didn’t know I had some yesterday) so he had the other “half”. I’d been thinking I was going to save some for tomorrow. I’ve just looked at the box and it says it is 4 portions.

Is it fair to think of the desserts as mine? (DH is very generous with his baking but he’d definitely comment if I scoffed down most of his biscuits or whatever.)

Was it fair for DH to eat the rest of what I thought was my dessert?

Would it have been fair for me to have three portions (one yesterday, one today, one tomorrow) while DH has just one?

Semi-lighthearted. I’ll provide a bit more context later.

The Waitrose pistachio tiramisu is nicer btw

Ooh thank you. I’m enjoying all these new pistachio desserts I’m seeing. There’s a pistachio and chocolate magnum I’ve tried and I also had a “Dubai style” cheesecake that wasn’t very sweet but oh so creamy. 😍

I might have been explicit if it was just one portion left. But it was quite a chunk of tiramisu! I feel
like 10 by 6cm is too much to eat in one go, it’s SO rich, it didn’t occur to me that he would eat it all. Same with the chocolate cake, I didn’t think to tell him not to eat half a cake.

We do love cakes but we don’t eat excessively big portions usually.

Ok I’ve measured it, it’s actually 12cm squared, 4cm deep. Does that make any difference? 😂

Google Gemini has recreated the cake based on those dimensions and it doesn’t make a difference! ☺️

I would easily demolish half of that Tiramisu.

If you think it’s 4 portions, I’d cut it into four next time and make it clear what he can or can’t have.

Communication is key…!

I’ve just spotted a chocolate cake that DH baked with DC last night. There’s about 80% left. There’s potential for Bruce Bogtrotter style of revenge here…if I could stomach it. 😂

That would be unfair of you.

I am very possessive over my food but you’re not seemingly grasping the 50/50 concept.

You both share things.

That means you get half and he gets half (it doesn’t matter if it takes you 10 separate servings to eat or you eat it in 1 go).

You wanted to have 3/4s of it and wanted your DH to only have 1/4 of it - why? How is that fair?

I know you’re joking about DHs cake but again you wanted 3/4 of it, leaving DH with just 1/4.

I think you see his cooking at both of yours but the things you buy as just yours that you are sharing.

Unless you make a rule that says when either of you buy/make something then it’s 3/4s the person who bought/made it.
But you both need to agree and stick to this rule or just always have 50/50.

My husband is the kind of person to eat a whole packet of biscuits in one go whereas I am able to have a couple then put them away. It's not unusual for me to think one afternoon that I fancy a biscuit only to find the tin empty. It's frustrating but I never consider them mine. In most cases he is pretty good at having his share and leaving mine but it's still fairly equal. The majority of what we buy is our food the only things we would ever consider his or my food is when we buy something the other doesn't like so the frozen curries are his but the strawberries are mine.

Butterme · Today 09:43

I’ve never tried Tiramisu as no one I know likes it so it would mean me having to eat an entire one by myself.

I think I’m going to have to get one after this thread!

Banana for scale 🥰

BlueMum16 · Today 09:47

I'm guessing he portioned out a serving of the 50-60% which was left and it then left a some bit that he thought "I can't leave that tiny bit' so ate the lot.

This is a non issue.

Why didn't your DC have any? Is pudding only for you?

I can’t imagine damaging the precious environment by using ChatGbt for such mindless information, seriously. 😟
We’re all fucked with 1000’s of people asking for advice on stupid things everyday feeding AI.

I wanted to just google it tbh.

But the Gemini generated AI information/summary automatically pops up nowadays right at the top… I don‘t think there’s a way to stop that unfortunately, is there?

MissRaspberry · Today 09:54

To be fair to him you did say there's tiramisu and that he could have some. He probably assumed you'd ate half and the rest was for him

How did humanity cope before Gemini or Dola. 😔

ButterYellowFlowers · Today 09:57

No I think it was perfectly fair. You both ate half, you reminded him you’d bought dessert.

The only mental thing is stating it feeds 4 on the package, WRONG !

Not sure. I think googling is still okay. Chatting regularly with the app x 100,00 of people has a huge effect on the environment.
It’s like a daily mantra “according to chatGBT” or “Dola said” ☺️

IMustDoMoreExercise · Today 09:59

He is not a mind reader. If you don't want him to eat any of your dessert then tell him when you buy it.

Posting on MN also has a huge effect on the environment. (As does normal Google search).

A portion is 2.5 cm x 2.5cm? 😳. Maybe a sign of the times, but that’s tiny. I hope it wasn’t too expensive! I’m sure he’s looked at it and thought it was one serving

You didn't do maths at school?

If you cut a 10cm square into 4 you get 4 x 5cm squares

@Mamma47448 you're over reacting! (But you knew that already, didn't you?😀).

In my house we had pork pie "gate". DP bought a largish pork pie (4 portions). I cut it in half and then cut one of the halves into half again - to make a single portion for me - leaving one quarter and one half of the pie.
When he wanted some, he cut a slice off the remaining half - a slice, not a wedge - thereby taking most of the meat and leaving the pastry behind!

Mamma47448 · Today 10:24

For those who say everything should be 50:50, that’s not the reality of life is it? We all have favourites. I like savoury snacks and light cream cakes and cheesecake, DH likes heavier chocolate cakes, DC likes chocolate ice-cream. We wouldn’t eat the last bit of chocolate ice-cream in the tub in case DC wants it. When DH bakes I’ll enjoy a slice or biscuit but knowing how much he loves them I wouldn’t eat the last piece. DH is mostly the same, if there’s only a bit of cheesecake or cream cake in the fridge he’ll leave it for me and eat something else.

So we do have desserts that are mostly “mine, yours, DC’s”. But occasionally DH will scoff down the last of one of mine, and it’s slightly annoying.

(For those telling me to get a grip and communicate, I have, when I saw the empty tray I told him I wish he’d saved me a bit, he said sorry, we’re fine.)

Well it’s got coffee and alcohol in it, I didn’t think to offer it to a primary age child before bedtime. Knowing DC he would spit it out any unusual flavours anyway so it would be a waste of good tiramisu!

Booboobagins · Today 10:43

So next time tell him he can have just half or a slice and that you want some. Or just separate some for him. He clearly can't be trusted to think of you.

The cake thing was just greed and it's a horrible behaviour.

The tiramisu was also greedy but you weren't clear.

I would still tell him he ate too much of it though.

There is one person in my family who is renowned for being an absolute glutton and will finish off any food in sight with no regard for other people who might want some.

Think - there's 4 slices of bacon left, and they KNOW that someone else will want some for breakfast. They don't care, will eat all four slices, and are happy to leave everyone else with bread and butter for breakfast.

Or dinner is cooked with the intention of having leftovers for dinner the next, they know this. Leftovers in the fridge - next day, unless the leftovers are hidden they will be gone - said person will have taken them for lunch or something to save them having to make their own lunch.

It's very selfish behaviour - but actually in your tiramisu case, I can see why he ate the whole thing, so I would probably just tell him you were actually planning to save some, and next time this arises just be explicit. Don't eat it all, you can have 1/2 of what's left.

Edited

So how many people do you think this 4 slices of bacon should feed. ?

3luckystars · Today 10:49

I know it’s not the point but I really think there should be some sort of fine for anyone adding pistachios to a tiramisu.
