I’ve just seen that the Hantavirus is in Liverpool?! They’ve been brought to Liverpool? I’ve got a 2 day work conference there and now I’m worried 😢 I suffer terribly with health anxiety. AIBU?

Hantavirus isn't airborne, it requires close contact, so it's much more containable.

This this this!!!!!! 😢 I don’t understand either

THEY ARE NOT ONLY ISOLATING FOR 72 HOURS!!!!

They are isolation for at least 72 hours AT. THE. HOSPITAL.

Then they will go home to their empty homes or another secure location and isolate for up to 45 days.

At no point will they be popping into your hotel for breakfast.

Get therapy.

Slightly off topic but can you call yourself a Scouser if you were born in the Wirral?

My late DP said he was but he was born in New Brighton.

No he’s a wool 😂😂😂😂😊😊

Exactly, it didn’t do a very good job at containing Covid!

If you are that bothered - just don’t go to the conference

COVID was a novel virus, never seen before.

Hantavirus is endemic (constantly present in low levels with occasional peaks). It's a well known & studied virus.

Even if there was a mutation that was making it easier to transmit between people, that would be quickly seen.

I live in Salisbury, a few miles down the road is Porton Down, the governments bio warfare and public health laboratories - they have things there, like smallpox, that are really nasty - but they are in a safe environment.

Likewise the isolated passengers in Liverpool pose no threat so long as they stay isolated.

Shortbread49 · 11/05/2026 20:53

I am from the Wirral and don’t think I am a scouser , the accent is different if you listen to it . But then am not sure I am a woolly back either so am not sure 😆

!!!

And then there are those of us who after a week in our capital city sprint on to the train at Euston thanking God we’re getting the hell out of there.

Everyone sprints onto the train at Euston thanks to the persistent late notice platform announcements! 🏃🏻‍♀️ 🚊

Do you think Covid became a global pandemic because of the isolation procedures at this hospital?

MumToBe1980 · 11/05/2026 20:55

I think your right to be anxious, although it will take some time to see an increaee in cases. There is no way that these people will isolate for 42 days. Placemarking to add that we will see many more cases over the next few months.

Elliania · 11/05/2026 20:55

@mumstheword1x Read this: https://ukhsa.blog.gov.uk/2026/05/05/what-is-hantavirus-how-is-it-transmitted-and-what-are-the-symptoms/

Specifically this part: "Hantavirus is not spread through everyday social contact like walking in public spaces, shops, workplaces, or schools. In the rare instances where a person has caught the infection from another person (rather than from a rodent), they have had close and prolonged contact with the person who has been infected with hantavirus. This would include people who share living spaces or who may have sat directly next to somebody on a long-haul flight."

I seriously doubt you'll be licking rats so you won't be catching it that way and as the patients who have been exposed are being securely quarantined then you won't be catching it from them either.

What is hantavirus? How is it transmitted and what are the symptoms? – UK Health Security Agency

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is monitoring and providing public health advice regarding an outbreak of hantavirus linked to a Dutch cruise ship. As of Tuesday 5 May, 6 individuals have become unwell, 2 of whom have been confirmed as having han...

I am from Birkenhead that is definately the Wirral ( but not Liverpool) and j went recently for the first time in many years and was very shocked by the town centre

TedTookVows · 11/05/2026 20:01

They haven’t been brought to Liverpool. Arrowe Park Hospital is on the Wirral and has a special block where they isolated Brits who came from China and tested positive for COVID. It’s been done before. They have the experience. It’ll be nowhere near your conference.

because it worked so well then 😂

Didn't the first few covid patients go to the RVI in Newcastle?
DD was having lectures in the medical school at the time, and even though the patients were in the same building (the medical school is in the RVI) no-one in the medical school caught covid from these patients.

DD will be having clinical placements in Liverpool hospitals next month, but as she won't be at the isolation hospital I am not worried.

It did. As has been said many MANY times on this thread, the quarantine protocols for the people isolating there were followed and worked. The problem was that COVID came into the country through many other ways and could not be contained.

In this case we know who the passengers are, we know where they are and they are being tracked.

Kayleighfish · 11/05/2026 20:58

It's not in Liverpool.

You know what we do have in Liverpool? The School of Tropical Medicine. Yet in 40 years I still haven't caught anything tropical, so I think you'll be just fine.

Why do you think they definitely won’t isolate? Because you wouldn’t?

hiddenchildnastyex · 11/05/2026 20:58

They are in an isolation unit ? Not out licking the door handles of business conference venues !

DeftWasp · 11/05/2026 20:58

Blankscreen · 11/05/2026 20:48

My worry is that it mutates. Apparently hantavirus' don't usually transmit human to human but this one has.

I also worry whether people can be trusted to self isolate at home for 45 days!! Surley be better to keep them in the hospital where they are properly monitored and controlled.

This strain is known to transmit human to human, there are sporadic outbreaks in Argentina - one at a party where around half the attendees caught it.

It is similar to the meningitis outbreak in Kent, the spread happened at the nightclub, there was a little onward transmission, but it then burned out.

As this strain of hantavirus has no animal host, and isn't really adapted to us humans, it would taper out pretty quickly even if there is some small onward transmission.

You can't isolate on the ship really as there are shared rooms.

If I had to go up north Hantavirus would be the least of my worries.

Jesus!

TheWalkingEyebag · 11/05/2026 21:01

I just saw your other post about the hotel room as well. Do you have a counsellor that you could chat to about your anxieties before heading to Liverpool? For what it’s worth, I think you’ll be perfectly safe in your hotel room and from hantavirus, but I do think it’s pretty important that you chat to a professional if you are finding your anxieties are impacting your day to day life.
