AIBU? Hantavirus Liverpool

I’ve just seen that the Hantavirus is in Liverpool?! They’ve been brought to Liverpool? I’ve got a 2 day work conference there and now I’m worried 😢 I suffer terribly with health anxiety. AIBU?

How to single-handedly offend people from the Wirral. Tell them they are from Liverpool. I have relatives who live so close to Arrowe Park hospital that if you threw a ball out of their front garden it's land in the car park. They are not worried.

I don’t understand how everyone can be so blasé like they were with Covid. Yes they’re isolating, but only for 72 hours when the incubation period of the disease can be up to 7-8 weeks! This is being handled all wrong. In my opinion, they should be isolating for 8 weeks on the ship or in hospital. No chance of breaking isolation. Lots of these people will go home and within days or weeks will have reasons to leave home or have visitors and then poof - spread.

They’re not only isolating for 72 hours. They are in isolation at Arrowe park for at least 72 hours and then they’ll be taken to their homes to isolate further. It’s not guaranteed they’ll leave the hospital after 72 hours, and the isolation at their home will be monitored (as it was with swine flu).

it’s different with Covid. Covid had thousands of people isolating at any one time and was impossible to contain - the first returnees from China were successfully quarantined at Arrowe park

I think you should watch the movie Contagion, just to really get in the mood. The Gwyneth Paltrow gurney scene. That will be wall to wall across the 'Pool.

Calm down

Yes, you are being very unreasonable! People are isolating at Arrowe Park in Wirral, not Liverpool- and they are isolating!!

I’m in Liverpool - you’ll be fine.

Oh Yes, my late Wirral DGM would have explained that she was not from Liverpool in no uncertain terms!

mumstheword1x · 11/05/2026 20:02

But it says they can be let out in 72 hours which will be when I’m at the conference 😢

Do you think they're likely to turn up at the conference?

HarriaHen · 11/05/2026 20:44

Andes hantavirus is apparently highly virulent (remember that word 😬)

Fatality Rate
Typically ranges from 25% to 40% but has historically reached as high as 50%.

Target Population
It often affects young, previously healthy individuals, particularly those in their 30s.

Disease Progression
After an initial flu like phase, the lungs rapidly fill with fluid leading to severe shortness of breath and cardiovascular shock.

Sounds nasty but chance to catch it are very very low. That's why the Santa cruise is so news worthy.

The only trouble is if it mutates and becomes more easy to spread.

mdinbc · 11/05/2026 20:44

Wear a mask and wash your hands often if you are that worried.

Serencwtch · 11/05/2026 20:44

mumstheword1x · 11/05/2026 20:05

Exactly, it didn’t do a very good job at containing Covid!

It did actually & those quarantined at Arrowe Park didn't spread the virus
It was already in the country & spreading & continuing to enter the country long after those people were released from Arrowe park.

Hantovirus is a completely different virus to COVID.

I would stay away from the long tailed mouse in south America & perhaps not share a tiny cruise cabin with someone already infected but other than that you'll be grand.

Liverpool is a great city.

!!!

And then there are those of us who after a week in our capital city sprint on to the train at Euston thanking God we’re getting the hell out of there.

And don't lick any rats, no matter how delicious them scouse rats look

Uncalled for classism.

I agree it was a nasty comment but Northeners aren’t a class - we don’t all live in terraced houses, with our flat caps and our whippets.

sleepwouldbenice · 11/05/2026 20:47

ThatLemonBear · 11/05/2026 20:16

You’re being ridiculous. They’re in a hospital on the Wirral, so technically Cheshire not Liverpool. And I very much doubt that after the weeks of hell they’ve been through on board that cruise ship, their first thought on being released will be to head for a bit of shopping in Liverpool city centre

Actually its Merseyside not cheshire
But yes miles away from you OP. Really dont worry. Then they are self isolating
I live not far away from the hospital .
I mean, it really isn't a specialist unit, its an accommodation unit by a hospital...but still nothing to worry about
And it was successful for covid. But, you know... it was a worldwide pandemic..there were other reasons it arrived
Now, genuinely, would you like me to recommend things to do in Liverpool. Green spaces where you can take a break?

MosquitoFace · 11/05/2026 20:48

I’ve got the rage virus and I’ll be in Liverpool this week. If I see you I give you a friendly bite.

RedRiverShore6 · 11/05/2026 20:48

They will be let out to isolate at home but only if there are no other people in the house. Their home could be anywhere in UK, I doubt it will be where your conference is

This this this!!!!!! 😢 I don’t understand either

My worry is that it mutates. Apparently hantavirus' don't usually transmit human to human but this one has.

I also worry whether people can be trusted to self isolate at home for 45 days!! Surley be better to keep them in the hospital where they are properly monitored and controlled.

Serencwtch · 11/05/2026 20:48

Maray1967 · 11/05/2026 20:42

Oh Yes, my late Wirral DGM would have explained that she was not from Liverpool in no uncertain terms!

Mine was from Birkenhead, which was DEFINITELY NOT The Wirral or Liverpool.

She was Welsh speaking & very proud but definitely what we would call working class.

Yeah York, Harrogate, Northumberland - awful, dreadful places 🙄

feellikeanalien · 11/05/2026 20:50

Slightly off topic but can you call yourself a Scouser if you were born in the Wirral?

My late DP said he was but he was born in New Brighton.

They’ve been taken to arrow park hospital infectious disease centre which is not in Liverpool

Shortbread49 · 11/05/2026 20:50

I am more worried that my elderly parents live bear that hospital and it is classed as Cheshire not Merseyside but if you are going to Liverpool and not going for a wander round Arrowe park ( the park behind the hospital ) then I don’t think there is anything to worry about
