Parent went mental at my Ddog!

Can someone please tell me how Ddog was at fault here?! We were walking on a footpath close to our house earlier, and a woman was pushing her toddler along on a sort of bike thing.

As we were passing, the toddler dropped a cuddly toy. Ddog instinctively went to pick this up (it resembled a dog toy) and I stopped him.

The woman went mental, shouted at Ddog “NO, NO” and I hurried us away.

I can tell it has impacted him, he has been really subdued since which is not like him at all.

Am I wrong to think the woman should have had some restraint?

Breed?

Ved · 30/04/2026 17:44

YABU. She did nothing wrong.

Also YABU for saying 'DDog!' 😆

Surprisednotusedb4 · 30/04/2026 17:44

Whatever the breed, the woman did NOTHING wrong

I think when people panic it can often come out louder and more aggressive then it was meant to. Kids get really attached to some toys it might be one they can't sleep without and the thought of the dog ripping it to pieces just caused panic.

34feeling54 · 30/04/2026 17:44

'Ddog' 🙄🙄

Surprisednotusedb4 · 30/04/2026 17:45

She didn’t want your dog slobbering over something that would be likely going straight I. To her toddlers mouth

or

it was an essential comfy to him and she worried your dog would ruin it

or… she just didn’t want your dog around her baby

Breed?

He’s a very tame DLab.

YABU. Surely your dog should be trained to not pick up anything dropped in front of it?

Surprisednotusedb4 · 30/04/2026 17:46

WesternAmy · 30/04/2026 17:45

He’s a very tame DLab.

A) you would say that
B) they’d have slobbered all over the toy

I’d gotten Ddog away from it by then, it was most bizarre behaviour!

This will be wildly unpopular with the MN dog-lovers, but I’m mostly on the woman’s side. I wouldn’t want dog slobber on my kid’s toy either. I probably would have shouted as well.

cobrakaieaglefang · 30/04/2026 17:46

You stopped him, no harm done to toy or child. She's obviously a mner.. dislikes dogs. 😉

Thundertoast · 30/04/2026 17:46

I think she could have just said 'no!' And grabbed it, massive overreaction here, you weren't doing anything wrong... unless the toy already in his mouth but I presume you would have mentioned it.

Latitudeohyeah · 30/04/2026 17:46

What the hell is the ddog?

BiddlyBipBipBeeBop · 30/04/2026 17:47

She didn’t want your dog slobbering on her child’s toy and reacted to stop it probably at the same time you did. She couldn’t know what you were going to do in that instant. Not everyone likes dogs.

That's the most likely explanation for this woman's reaction. I wouldn't take it personally.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 30/04/2026 17:47

Yabu. Dogs should be trained to leave others belongings. I have labs, they are trained to do this

Clefable · 30/04/2026 17:48

Some people just go through life ready to overreact to stuff at the drop of a hat. I feel a bit sorry for them really, can’t be nice to be so panicky or angry about stuff, so just count your blessings that isn’t you and try to forget it.

PinkNailPolish2026 · 30/04/2026 17:48

Does your dog know the ‘leave’ command? It’s one of the first things we teach our labs, you don’t want them picking up random bits when out on a walk.

Arlanymor · 30/04/2026 17:48

She said no. Twice. That's mental is it? Dogs can and should be trained not to pick up stuff. Isn't the command 'leave' or similar?

Surprisednotusedb4 · 30/04/2026 17:49

Latitudeohyeah · 30/04/2026 17:46

What the hell is the ddog?

Dangerous Dog!

ToKittyornottoKitty · 30/04/2026 17:49

Well she couldn’t predict the future and know you’d stop the dog, she saw dog going for the toy and shouted no. I very much doubt your dogs feeling are still hurt by being told no hours later. That’s you projecting onto the dog.

BudgetBuster · 30/04/2026 17:49

🙄 Went mental? By saying no?
If that's the case I go mental at my dog 24/7 who is an opportunist when the kids drop anything.

Also, you don't have to randomly put D in front of every dog related word. Ddog, DLab... very strange.

She did nothing wrong. Maybe your dog isn't socialised enough and shouldn't be around people if he is now subdued because he was told no.
