Parent went mental at my Ddog!

Can someone please tell me how Ddog was at fault here?! We were walking on a footpath close to our house earlier, and a woman was pushing her toddler along on a sort of bike thing.

As we were passing, the toddler dropped a cuddly toy. Ddog instinctively went to pick this up (it resembled a dog toy) and I stopped him.

The woman went mental, shouted at Ddog “NO, NO” and I hurried us away.

I can tell it has impacted him, he has been really subdued since which is not like him at all.

Am I wrong to think the woman should have had some restraint?

I imagine she dislikes dogs and was worried about dog slobber on the toy.

Though presumably she considers the germs from the floor to be fine.

People are strange.

I think you'll get no sense on mn where people seem to believe dogs have no right to exist in communal space.

rwalker · 30/04/2026 17:50

She didn’t want Dslober on it

Clockbook · 30/04/2026 17:50

Don’t over think it. I’m neutral about dogs so I wouldn’t have been bothered if a dog had picked up my kids toy, but lots of people really aren’t keen on dogs, which is fair enough. Maybe she over reacted but it doesn’t really matter does it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 30/04/2026 17:50

OTT

Branleuse · 30/04/2026 17:50

Don't overthink it. The woman was obviously not used to dogs and was just a bit ott. I am sure your dog will forget quickly. I doubt he's traumatised

Well she couldn’t predict the future and know you’d stop the dog, she saw dog going for the toy and shouted no. I very much doubt your dogs feeling are still hurt by being told no hours later. That’s you projecting onto the dog.

He’s definitely impacted, I know what my Ddog is like. Bloody crazy woman!

What the hell is the ddog?

Work it out! or stop being snarky. It’s no worse than the sickly DH that everyone trots out! I’ve seen it a lot on Mumsnet.

OP I’m a dog owner and I wouldn’t want someone else’s dog grabbing my child’s toy, so can understand her (over?) reaction. And your dog shouldn’t be subdued because of that. You should have just given him a pat and told him he’s a good boy then carried on with no more thought to it.

PennyThought · 30/04/2026 17:51

Neurotic mums. Happy to let the kids play in the street, be entertained by strangers on mobile phones but a dog licking a toy....goodness, no!

Ved · 30/04/2026 17:52

@WesternAmy

At least your DLab DDog didn't get hold of the DToy, and rip it up, or the DChild would have been DUpset, and his DMum would have had to buy a DNew one.

Metromayhem · 30/04/2026 17:52

You sound insane. Your dog won’t give a shit. YABU.

Dangerous Dog!

I was going to say Dastardly Dog!

Hopefully he won’t do it again then.

WesternAmy · 30/04/2026 17:52

DDog < DH or the incredibly cringey ‘DSIL/DMIL’ etc which gets used on here 😂

Oh come on. You seem massively OTT now. ‘Bloody crazy woman’ because she said no x 2 to your dog? It’s not like she kicked your dog or spat at you is it? Confused

Casuallydresseddeepinconversation · 30/04/2026 17:53

doesn’t sound like she went mental

ColdAsAWitches · 30/04/2026 17:53

Seriously? What an overreaction to a complete non-event!

Sinuhe · 30/04/2026 17:53

Honestly, the item was dropped on the floor- fair game to whoever gets there first!
The shooting clearly was cheating, what a bad loose!

Can’t tell you if are calling me bloody crazy, or the woman, or yourself? Regardless, your dog is fine, it’s a dog. Hopefully itl think twice before trying to grab a toy that doesn’t belong to it next time, the woman might have done you a favour really. And the ‘D’ in front of things on mumsnet is for abbreviations, adding it onto dog makes it longer. Dog is fine, you don’t need to ddog every time!

Sounds like both you and the dog need therapy if you think she's the bloody crazy woman in this scenario 🙄😂

Sinuhe · 30/04/2026 17:54

*shouting

Metromayhem · 30/04/2026 17:55

But the whole point of DH is that it’s quicker to type than husband. DDog is more letters, it’s so weird and cringe. Also nobody thinks your dog is dear or darling other than you, and I would shout at it if it tried to out its horrible slobbery mouth around my kids toys too.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 30/04/2026 17:55

Did she go “mental”, or did she just shout “no no” to attempt to deter the dog from picking up her child’s toy? I wouldn’t class that as going mental - I thought you were going to say she went on a massive screaming rant at you
I don’t think shouting no is unreasonable, if your dog picked up the toy, best case it has dog slobber on it, worst case it gets ripped/broken

Worst ones are DNiece and DNephew! 😂

JulietteHasAGun · 30/04/2026 17:56

I’m a big dog lover but I’d understand someone shouting in that situation. Would be instinctive. She doesn’t want her toddlers soft toy in a dog’s mouth. I wouldn’t either.
