Parent went mental at my Ddog!

Can someone please tell me how Ddog was at fault here?! We were walking on a footpath close to our house earlier, and a woman was pushing her toddler along on a sort of bike thing.

As we were passing, the toddler dropped a cuddly toy. Ddog instinctively went to pick this up (it resembled a dog toy) and I stopped him.

The woman went mental, shouted at Ddog “NO, NO” and I hurried us away.

I can tell it has impacted him, he has been really subdued since which is not like him at all.

Am I wrong to think the woman should have had some restraint?

I think anyone who has a ddog and only writes "dog" is extremely weird. Don't they love their dog? I would be suspicious. If it's not a ddog, they should give it up to someone who DOES think of it as a ddog!

What the hell is the ddog?

It's traditional on MN (Like DH, DD, etc.) We had dchameleon once. I think it's sweet.

It isn't dogs' fault people anthropomorphise them, prioritise their human needs over the animals' by treating them as little babies

Yes, why wasn't DDog safely tucked up in one of those doggy prams OP?😄

I don't mind dogs, but I am a bit bemused by a couple we know (childless) who will say at about 6pm "Well we must be off: we need to take the Ddog for a walk" as if it is some leggy Great Dane who needs to burn off energy with laps of the park, when in fact it is some kind of Jack Russel cross who has been so overfed it's legs don't hold it up and it gets pushed round the block in its pram. I just don't get what they think is "needed" about that walk - though I guess they unload him outside someone else's house to take a dump, then hoist him back in and push him home.

I went to an event recently and the woman sitting next to me said, "I'd better go. I told the dog I'd only be an hour."

Are people using their dogs as an excuse to go home rather than hanging round with you often?

I love this!

I love the arrogance that they believe there’s something wrong with the dog owner rather than their conversation. It’s an excuse to get away. Nothing more.

I wonder if ddog was wearing a watch!

I think all the posters who are mocking Ddog for being upset are really mean!

Ffs it’s a dog! Will only momentarily be traumatised. Stop putting human feelings into/onto dogs. It’s hardly like the mother hit it hard.

Harhar · Today 08:44

Also, ffs it was a cuddly toy. Hardly the end of the world the dog glanced at it.

I think it was the event she was bored with, rather than my company!

But they do have many of the same feelings we do. They feel anger, happiness, loneliness, depression, sadness, fear, joy, contentment. The only reason that humans can labour under the impression that they do not is because they can't talk. They would have plenty of feelings to express if they could! Also, remember how sensitive dogs' ears are. When the woman shouted, it must have deafened him. Him, note, not it!

Yes but only in that moment. I can guarantee that the dog won’t have held onto those emotions for the same length of time OP said it would. My cat gets pissed off if you yell at her (not often) but is over it in a short time.

I know dogs and cats and other animals have similar emotions to us too. Well aware of that.

Guess I’ve traumatised a neighbours dog and it’ll now need months of therapy, after telling it to fuck off.
