Alcohol causes just as much, if not more harm to society as tobacco does. IMO it should be banned as well. Any possibly junk food as well?

I'm just imagining a group of 50 years olds in 2058 being told they're not allowed to have a glass of Rioja with their tapas because the government says so, while the world burns down around them.

Personally, I would much rather live in a society in which alcohol was banned but ecstasy, MDMA and the milder forms of cannabis were legal.

Alcohol is a dangerous and highly addictive drug. It makes people loud, aggressive and obnoxious. One of the few really positive changes I have lived through is the decline in alcohol consumption. Public drunkenness used to be a national humiliation. It made me SO ashamed of this country.

The young uns are making better choices with alcohol anyway, so they will be fine. Its us older folk who have been habituated to it for a lifetime you need to worry about.

I don't think smoking should be banned so it's a non-starter for me.

That being said, alcohol historically has been a food as much or more than it has been a drug. It's a way to preserve the harvest and can keep quite a lot of calories in a small space, in a fairly stable state.

That's maybe not as necessary for many people as it once was, but it doesn't mean it's useless. There are still cider apples all over the country and if you make cider, which is lovely and useful, it doesn't take long to become alcoholic.
