What place/city would you never visit that others love?

Paris and New York for me. They don't appeal at all. Not just the amount of tourists but when I've seen of them on tv and videos they don't look attractive. I'm open to being told I'm wrong. I don't like London but would visit if I had to. I've been a few times for shows and sport etc. I always feel grubby after a visit.
I do like some cities. Favourites are Edinburgh and Barcelona. Barcelona is rife with pickpockets though so you have to be on your guard.

My ideal holiday is walking in the lakes but I still enjoy the odd city break.

So is there anywhere that is popular that doesn't appeal to you?

Australia. Everyone else seems to rave about it but it's so far down my list of places I want to visit that if I die without going i won't feel regret. With the exception of gaining understanding of the indigenous people, I dont see what culture there is there? Similarly nature outside of the great barrier reef. My ignorance is know. Also everything wants to kill you lol
I am fully aware I'm writing off a country 50 plus times larger than the UK in one fell swoop.

Gardenquestion22 · 28/04/2026 11:22

@Squirrelchops1 same for me - it's way down the list. I'm sure it's absolutely incredible - but it seems like such vast amount of nothing in between things. There are so many other places I want to go first.

I'm well up for a bit South America trip on retirement and am working my way through SE Asia for vacations.

Also visited NZ years ago and would happily go back.

estrogone · 28/04/2026 11:22

Oh crikey. Here we go. Same old BS!

Dubai
Australia
America
France

These threads are so overdone and frankly, fucking insulting.

Making a blanket statement that you would never go somewhere because you have preconceived ideas about a place you know nothing about, says more about you than the place. Yawn.

MoverOva · 28/04/2026 11:26

@estrogone I'd forgotten about Dubai thanks! 🤣

I'd go to Australia as have family there so know I'd enjoy it from what I've been shown.

New Zealand looks fabulous. I'm definitely drawn to lush green places.

Disneyland.

I think I know enough about it to say that…

To refute this. Dorothea Mackellar says it best:

The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes.
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins,
Strong love of grey-blue distance
Brown streams and soft dim skies
I know but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!

A stark white ring-barked forest
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon.
Green tangle of the brushes,
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When sick at heart, around us,
We see the cattle die -
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady, soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back threefold -
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land -
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand -
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

What about Disney World? I love the Epcot centre. Not so keen on the magic kingdom.

For me it would be Venice and Disneyworld
any countries that have very little human rights especially womens right particularly Dubai. But would love to go to Oman.

Yes, it's completely ridiculous. I mean, I've lived in Dubai and absolutely acknowledge that it's a dreadful place, but that's based on actually spending considerable time there.

Ok I'm ridiculous. Jog on.

Just been watching a YouTube of places that you shouldn't miss in the UK. So many I've visited and love. Lots more to visit. Edinburgh vaults was one.

Now I must get ready and get on. No work today though hence having time to post ridiculous threads 🤣

agree

and we all have different tastes and interests.

Plus I can’t fathom writing off a whole continent

CointreauVersial · 28/04/2026 12:33

Not sure why everyone is getting so bent out of shape about what is essentially some idle chit-chat about places you don't fancy visiting...

I have no interest in going to India. Does that make me narrow minded and yawn-worthy? Probably. It just doesn't appeal. No biggie.

Because these threads come up all the time on here, and they're just a way of people congratulating themselves on being mentally lazy and incurious, and confirming it by having their own baseless prejudices corroborated by other people's equally baseless prejudices.

I'm hugely curious but Australia doesn't interest me the way numerous other places do. For me it really isn't that deep.
Plus, I'm actually thankful for having the ability to travel anywhere I do fancy.

To the poster that mentioned South America as a place they want to visit...me too. Plans for Peru, Bolivia and Chile next year. Top of my to do list but understand if it isn't others.

hahabahbag · 28/04/2026 12:48

UAE not even for flights, I just don’t get the appeal. We fly via interesting places, I’m not anti ME because I’ve booked via Oman with 2 nights there, I like old stuff which they have.

New York is fabulous 🏙️

Tell me what you love about it? I'm all for being changed. The only people I know who've been raved about shopping. I'll have a Google too.

All those yawning. How many threads would there be if all we did was advanced search and posted on those? And I'm all for being convinced otherwise about my choices. I genuinely can't see the appeal of Paris, Dubai and New York but am open to discussion about why I'm wrong, hence posting on AIBU. Although even chat brings out aibi fans nowadays.
I know people who would baulk at walking 10 miles through hills. But I love it. I doubt I'd convince them to though. We're all different.

Yes old buildings are fabulous. I was so upset when they built the parliament building in Edinburgh. I visited a few times as it was being built.

*Another no for Australia
*As a Brit I apologise, but couldn't care if I never saw London again.
*Also a blanket ban on anywhere colder than the UK. No skiing. No Lapland to see Santa. No northern lights. No ice hotels etc

Gardenquestion22 · 28/04/2026 13:14

@AgnesMcDoo I'm not wiping off a whole continent - and if I have many more years of travelling ahead of me I will undoubtedly get to Australia. But given limited time, resources and oomph - it's not as high on my list of places I want to go as other places.

I can't think of anywhere I'd completely write off (other than for can't travel due to safety reasons - as in active war/very unsafe zones).

Thechaseison71 · 28/04/2026 13:16

Dubai. Have had layover there but did zilch for me

The French Riviera.
I'm never bothered by areas which are very upmarket, even though I can afford them. I think they're a bit naff and full of people 20+ years older than me having an inauthentic experience that doesnt in any way represent how the locals live.
