What place/city would you never visit that others love?

Paris and New York for me. They don't appeal at all. Not just the amount of tourists but when I've seen of them on tv and videos they don't look attractive. I'm open to being told I'm wrong. I don't like London but would visit if I had to. I've been a few times for shows and sport etc. I always feel grubby after a visit.
I do like some cities. Favourites are Edinburgh and Barcelona. Barcelona is rife with pickpockets though so you have to be on your guard.

My ideal holiday is walking in the lakes but I still enjoy the odd city break.

So is there anywhere that is popular that doesn't appeal to you?

I don’t there is anywhere I would not visit (maybe Lebanon because Lebanese mates of mine dissuaded me.)

There are places I would not return to: Barcelona being in the number 1 spot. But that’s it.

MoverOva · 28/04/2026 13:18

@Gardenquestion22 we're so lucky being able to see videos of places before we go. And can research online. Years ago we bought a guide book and heard by word of mouth.

Paris - only city I haven't felt safe in

Edinburgh- been lots but never again. Can't put my finger on why but just don't get the love

I will never revisit Scarborough.
I spent a fortnight there one wet Tuesday.

Australia. Everyone else seems to rave about it but it's so far down my list of places I want to visit that if I die without going i won't feel regret. With the exception of gaining understanding of the indigenous people, I dont see what culture there is there? Similarly nature outside of the great barrier reef. My ignorance is know. Also everything wants to kill you lol
I am fully aware I'm writing off a country 50 plus times larger than the UK in one fell swoop.

I felt that way till I visited on a business trip. Ended up loving it so much I moved there! 🤣

🤣 I don't live far and it's not appealing nowadays. Robin hoods bay and Staithes up the coast are beautiful. Good to go out of season. Filey is nicer than Scarborough imo.

Although there is nowhere I would not visit I am less bothered by South America. I know there are tonnes of different countries and I have been to one. It’s just not at the top of my list as a region.

MoverOva · 28/04/2026 13:24

@JHound how amazing. Are you still there? A relation is in Brisbane and I'd love to go one day?

I loved the dales.

I like both Paris and New York, but then I like art and history. Both have absolutely amazing museums like the Musee de Cluny in Paris which has a fabulous collection of medieval art and tapestry or the Rodin museum which is a really beautiful building with gardens overlooking Les Invalides and which contains a number of sculptures and the studies for them.

In New York there is the Metropolitan Museum of Art or for art, but also places like the Ellis Island Foundation for the history of US immigration - pretty much somewhere for any interest.

None of my family are interested in theme parks at all, so wouldn't bother with Disney (anywhere).

Because these threads come up all the time on here, and they're just a way of people congratulating themselves on being mentally lazy and incurious, and confirming it by having their own baseless prejudices corroborated by other people's equally baseless prejudices.

You do realise @TerracottaBowl a million or so people use this site? And so chances are there will be similar or repeated topics? And not everyone will read every thread.

You don’t have to read them if they bore you.

I live in London and it feels quintessentially London and quintessentially UK to me.

No - after over a decade I returned to the UK for family reasons. It’s a great place to live though. I lived for a while in Brisbane - great city!

JHound · 28/04/2026 13:32

To add as well - Paris and New York are two of my favourites cities on earth. Love, love, LOVE both of them!

Tell me what you love about it? I'm all for being changed. The only people I know who've been raved about shopping. I'll have a Google too.

All those yawning. How many threads would there be if all we did was advanced search and posted on those? And I'm all for being convinced otherwise about my choices. I genuinely can't see the appeal of Paris, Dubai and New York but am open to discussion about why I'm wrong, hence posting on AIBU. Although even chat brings out aibi fans nowadays.
I know people who would baulk at walking 10 miles through hills. But I love it. I doubt I'd convince them to though. We're all different.

For me New York is a load of things and it’s not the shopping which is fine.

the history. New York is the melting pot of the US it’s where most of the immigrants came. Ellis island where they all came in is fascinating. I love learning about how the history of the immigrants came about and how the food and the culture influenced this. The tenement museum is incredible to understand this

the architecture is amazing from skyscrapers to the brownstones, the tenament buildings

The museums and galleries

The 9/11 memorials in battery park

taking the boat across to Brooklyn and some really fantastic neighbourhood there such as dumbo

other neighbourhoods to explore - the east and west village, meat packing district, Chelsea peers, the wealth of the upper east side.

Central Park really is fabulous to spend some time

I avoid mid town as much as possible, it’s like spending your holiday in Leicester Square but some of the neighbourhoods round there like Murray hill, gramercy, Chelsea etc are lovely

THIS. However, I have actually been to Australia and it was god awful. Like a depressing UK in the 1970s.

agree with @childoftkty re New York. It has so much more to it than the shopping and it is an amazing city! You feel very alive there! But I can understand if you don’t love big cities then it might not be for you.

I have no desire whatsoever to visit India!

I visited the Ellis Island museum in my last trip to NYC. It was INCREDIBLE.

I love that they had some copies of original manifests of passengers arriving years in the past and then noting that person’s great grandchild is working in the gift shop so go say hi. Real connection of past to present. 🥰

Magnificentkitteh · 28/04/2026 13:37

Paris is fabulous. I think it's small things like the street furniture, architecture generally, lovely bakeries etc. A sensory treat. Same with most good cities really. Unsure why it would appeal to you less than Barcelona. It has quite a lot in common and is more easily accessible.

Disneyland.

I think I know enough about it to say that…

Me too. I dont like rides or queues or overpriced food or everything artificial.

PennyThought · 28/04/2026 13:39

Any middle east country, India, Pakistan, North Korea or any other communist country and Mexico.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/04/2026 13:39

I’m not interested in going to India, ( I struggle with immense poverty when on holiday) South america( husband been to Brazil and found it very edgy and not in a good way and if I want a Latin type vibe I would rather go to Spain for a lot less) same goes for South Africa - I know too many who have had very edgy experiences - our friends lived there for 13 years and there was a lot of drama. I hated Dubai - but I do like Paris, London and New York .

Not sure why everyone is getting so bent out of shape about what is essentially some idle chit-chat about places you don't fancy visiting...

I have no interest in going to India. Does that make me narrow minded and yawn-worthy? Probably. It just doesn't appeal. No biggie.

I'm the same about India. I might go to Goa or Kerala one day, but I don't want to go to the big cities where all the crowding, noise and poverty is in your face. Conversely I wouldn't want to do a sanitised five star version where you don't get a true picture.

I agree with this. The Empire State Building in NYC is so beautiful - that art deco interior!. The museums, art galleries and architecture are world class in New York, Paris and London. You just have to know which areas to visit and which to avoid for the best experience!
