Paris and New York for me. They don't appeal at all. Not just the amount of tourists but when I've seen of them on tv and videos they don't look attractive. I'm open to being told I'm wrong. I don't like London but would visit if I had to. I've been a few times for shows and sport etc. I always feel grubby after a visit.
I do like some cities. Favourites are Edinburgh and Barcelona. Barcelona is rife with pickpockets though so you have to be on your guard.

My ideal holiday is walking in the lakes but I still enjoy the odd city break.

So is there anywhere that is popular that doesn't appeal to you?

China, probably India ( unless doing it very expensively), Dubai certainly, Thailand. And probably many more….
Reasons are Human and Animal abuses. Fear of someone putting drugs in my luggage. Hygiene, or lack of it. Scary creatures. Dietary concerns.

Las Vegas. It really just looks like my idea of hell.

I like both Paris and New York, but then I like art and history. Both have absolutely amazing museums like the Musee de Cluny in Paris which has a fabulous collection of medieval art and tapestry or the Rodin museum which is a really beautiful building with gardens overlooking Les Invalides and which contains a number of sculptures and the studies for them.

In New York there is the Metropolitan Museum of Art or for art, but also places like the Ellis Island Foundation for the history of US immigration - pretty much somewhere for any interest.

None of my family are interested in theme parks at all, so wouldn't bother with Disney (anywhere).

I love museums and art galleries. There's a lot in the places I do love to visit.

I love Greece. Corfu town is beautiful imo. Kassiopi is heavenly. I'd probably move there if younger and we were allowed.

Las Vegas and New York hold absolutely no interest for me. And yes, Dubai as well.

I'm not really into big cities, shopping, busy night life, bright lights, lots of noise and would prefer to spend my time in naturally spectacular surroundings. I'd love to visit Nepal, for example, and I'm planning a Fjords cruise. If I visit cities, I like a lot of history, culture and old architecture. I'd like to visit Prague next, for example.

Each to their own and all that. I do wonder whether extroverts are drawn to higher sensory loads while introverts (like me) are drawn to calmer, natural environments more. Just a theory though, and I'm sure someone will be along shortly to prove me wrong! 😊

Kassiopi is the only place we return to....7 weeks and counting! We adore it.

Less than 3 for us! Our 5th visit.

Asia generally, just don't have the longing to go like so many do.

Overrated cities I would not rush go back to- Barcelona and Paris.

JuliettaCaeser · 28/04/2026 14:19

Australia and New Zealand. Just too bloody far.

Morocco. People rave about it but after too many horrid incidents as a young woman with vile men in North Africa sworn never to go there again.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/04/2026 14:19

India, although Asia as a whole just doesn’t appeal.

aWeeCornishPastie · 28/04/2026 14:23

Paris

PermanentTemporary · 28/04/2026 14:24

There are a lot of cities I found extremely hard work when I had to visit on almost no money - Venice was the classic, I was in a horrible ?hostel I think, eaten alive by mozzies, and could barely afford to eat as well as travel so was miserably hungry. I had the same problem in Paris plus always unlucky with the weather. But finally going back with some money and just happening to hit some sunny days - it’s a different world. Paris was wonderful. Just drifting along the streets looking at architecture in the 6th, and the loudest noise being the sound of conversation in restaurants, and Notre Dame, and the light on the Seine, oh my goodness. It was wonderful.

A lot of places that are top of my list are currently off limits, like Lviv or St Petersburg. So I’m no longer going to rule much out in case I don’t get to try them. I will admit that though it is clearly a great country, I don’t have much of a pull to visit Canada, except perhaps Vancouver.

Edited

The fjords are amazing. The first time I saw them I gasped. We went on a cruise. The locals aren't fans of cruisers. They have tendency not to spend anything in port.

I'm an extrovert but love walking without a soul in sight. Also love some cities.

Dubai and weirdly NZ has not been sold to me but I absolutely love Sydney and Melbourne.
Edit to say India holds zero appeal to me.

SilverLining77 · 28/04/2026 14:33

Blackpool
Alton Towers

New York is fabulous 🏙️

I agree. So are all the Disneylands and Disneyworld. Paris is good too.

Passaggressfedup · 28/04/2026 15:00

Two places I visited which did nothing to me was Brighton and Barcelona. Both felt more hyped than what it offered.

I wasn't keen on NY. Only went because my kids wanted to go and refused to pay the ridiculous price their school was charging for three days. I was very pleasantly surprised. I've been twice again and love it a bit more each time. Lovely people and nowhere as overwhelming as I feared. So much to do and see. Lived Central Park.

I love Paris but that's because I know the secret places Parisians don't want tourists to invade.

Sartre · 28/04/2026 15:03

I’d love to visit Barcelona but the pickpockets do concern me because I don’t go abroad to be stressed constantly worrying someone will rob me. My friend was pickpocketed there on the beach and they stole his passport which is scary, I just wouldn’t want that.

I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to visit Australia. I’d go if someone offered it for free but I wouldn’t pay.

Sartre · 28/04/2026 15:06

MoverOva · 28/04/2026 13:22

🤣 I don't live far and it's not appealing nowadays. Robin hoods bay and Staithes up the coast are beautiful. Good to go out of season. Filey is nicer than Scarborough imo.

Agreed. Scarbados and Brid are the worst the Yorkshire coast has to offer so I tend to avoid. Filey and Whitby are better, Robin Hoods Bay if you want somewhere a bit quieter. Saltburn is nice too.

I’m not interested in going to India, ( I struggle with immense poverty when on holiday) South america( husband been to Brazil and found it very edgy and not in a good way and if I want a Latin type vibe I would rather go to Spain for a lot less) same goes for South Africa - I know too many who have had very edgy experiences - our friends lived there for 13 years and there was a lot of drama. I hated Dubai - but I do like Paris, London and New York .

Do you mean dodgy experiences?

ginasevern · 28/04/2026 15:08

I don't want to go on Safari and I don't want to go to Barcelona. I'd be worried about going to India at my age (nearly 70) in case I got food poisoning. Not bothered about New Zealand or Australia either. To be honest I love Europe, its history and food and if I had the time and resources I'd spend them exploring it far more than I have. Including the UK.

curious79 · 28/04/2026 15:11

If others loved a place, and I hadn’t been, I could never be anything but curious unless they described something about it that is so obviously ‘not me’. Weird

AutumnLover1990 · 28/04/2026 15:11

I adore New York. Been twice.

Places I've never been because they don't appeal.. Australia,New Zealand,Greece and Dubai.

worrisomeasset · 28/04/2026 15:20

Cornwall. It takes bloody ages to get there in the summer and, when you finally get there, the weather is shit. Then it's the interminable drive home again. I'd choose Wales instead. Yes, the weather is as shit there as it is in Cornwall but the scenery is better, its coastal towns aren't as rammed as Cornwall's, and (most importantly) it's a whole lot nearer for those of us who live in the Midlands.
