What place/city would you never visit that others love?

Paris and New York for me. They don't appeal at all. Not just the amount of tourists but when I've seen of them on tv and videos they don't look attractive. I'm open to being told I'm wrong. I don't like London but would visit if I had to. I've been a few times for shows and sport etc. I always feel grubby after a visit.
I do like some cities. Favourites are Edinburgh and Barcelona. Barcelona is rife with pickpockets though so you have to be on your guard.

My ideal holiday is walking in the lakes but I still enjoy the odd city break.

So is there anywhere that is popular that doesn't appeal to you?

I guess I could sum up what I like as old buildings and beautiful countryside/scenery.

As a result I have no desire to visit Dubai, Las Vegas, Disneyland/Disneyworld, and other similar places of that nature.

I guess I make some exceptions in terms of very modern cities in that I’ve visited Singapore (albeit as a stopover en route to Australia), it was interesting for two nights but I wouldn’t say I love it and/or have much desire to go back.

Jaddf · 28/04/2026 16:23

I so so so want to go to Riyadh (when the weather is bearable).

You don’t like Paris, New York or London? I have lived in all three cities and they are all incredible in their own ways. I don’t think you and I would get along! Having said which, I love Edinburgh too and I’m going to Barcelona for the first time soon so I’m pleased to hear you like that one!

I hate you!!

Because I am jealous. I have lived in Paris and London but not managed NYC yet.

Tell me what you love about it? I'm all for being changed. The only people I know who've been raved about shopping. I'll have a Google too.

All those yawning. How many threads would there be if all we did was advanced search and posted on those? And I'm all for being convinced otherwise about my choices. I genuinely can't see the appeal of Paris, Dubai and New York but am open to discussion about why I'm wrong, hence posting on AIBU. Although even chat brings out aibi fans nowadays.
I know people who would baulk at walking 10 miles through hills. But I love it. I doubt I'd convince them to though. We're all different.

Edited

I visited NY to go to the opera and to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both were fabulous. I didn’t do any shopping.

Won’t go to Japan for personal reasons.
Don’t fancy the big cities in India as I don’t think I’d cope with the chaos. Although I do quite fancy Kerala.
New Zealand - just too far away.

People who expect a city to be like it was a century ago are odd!

Jaddf · 28/04/2026 16:29

Why is there so much hatred about Paris? What's so violent about it? Why are the people this way?

Onefairfish · 28/04/2026 16:30

I don’t there is anywhere I would not visit (maybe Lebanon because Lebanese mates of mine dissuaded me.)

There are places I would not return to: Barcelona being in the number 1 spot. But that’s it.

I visited Lebanon for work during a more peaceful time. There are some beautiful and fascinating places to visit, such as Byblos. Its modern history is very sad.

honeylulu · 28/04/2026 16:31

It seems a bit silly to say you'll never visit somewhere because you might find you are surprised how much you like it.

I've been to all sorts of places and the ones I felt a bit meh about (and am not inclined to go again) are:
Dubai (sorry, predictable but it's very hot and not very interesting).
Tunisia (hassled everywhere, in a less good humoured style than Morocco which I liked).
Copenhagen (so quiet and sterile, I wanted to like it and the people were lovely and helpful but I just didn't "get" it).
Canary Islands (ok but not much to do and weather ok but not amazing either).
Sunny Beach, Bulgaria (nice week there but nothing that would make me go again, feel like we saw and did anything there was to do already).

Loved Paris, London, New York, Rome, Amsterdam and Disneyworld!
Favourite places: Hawaii, Thailand, Malaysia, Greek Islands (various).

Oh certainly and maybe in the future. I am sure it had changed a lot since my friends warned me off (some 20 years ago.)

GoodkneeBadKnee · 28/04/2026 16:33

India.
Australia.
South Africa.
The Cotswolds.

Hey you will get no Paris hate from me.

I am a Francophile generally but Paris especially is my heartbeat. Love love love it. My lasting regret in life is never having returned there to live permanently.

Do you have schengen residency rights?

KoalaBlue1 · 28/04/2026 16:38

My bucket list is NZ, soon to be ticked off, Canada, Ireland, Scotland.
Wouldn't touch America with a barge pole, likewise rest of Uk.
Then my dream would be to see Broome and the north of W.A.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 28/04/2026 16:40

Dubai, Australia.

Jaddf · 28/04/2026 16:40

I want to see NYC (again), Boston, Chicago, and I want to see a few places in Texas. I've heard the food is amazing in Austin.

JHound · 28/04/2026 16:46

Jaddf · 28/04/2026 16:34

British so no. Although that’s not really a blocker to me. If I had wanted to move there I could have made it work (like I have with Oz, Canada etc).

I had the opportunity and for reasons to long to explain took an opportunity in London instead and now have a permanent “WhatIf?”

Leaving aside when I lived there I think I have been maybe 12/14 times? It’s my most visited place for sure.

ERthree · 28/04/2026 16:47

Dubai, i make sure my layover is no more than 8 hours, quick trip to the mall to buy a particular soap and straight back in the car. Jo'burg is just a gunshot away from a riot.

TheDogsMother · 28/04/2026 16:48

I have been to Paris many times and love it. Since the Olympics it seems even better and friendlier. It is so beautiful I just don’t know what’s not to like.

I saw some internet list of the world's top 20 most dangerous cities the other day and an alarming proportion of them were all in South Africa.

Squirrelchops1 · 28/04/2026 11:16

Australia. Everyone else seems to rave about it but it's so far down my list of places I want to visit that if I die without going i won't feel regret. With the exception of gaining understanding of the indigenous people, I dont see what culture there is there? Similarly nature outside of the great barrier reef. My ignorance is know. Also everything wants to kill you lol
I am fully aware I'm writing off a country 50 plus times larger than the UK in one fell swoop.

Edited

I know what you mean about Australia but they do have a rainforest too! Aswell as the bush (some are into that - not for me) and Tasmania is meant to be beautiful. But I don’t like dangerous creatures and when I flew over it it seemed like 4 hours of orange dust!

It's absolutely horrendous. Only place I'd go is Capetown.

Paris
Egypt
Morocco
Marrakesh
Japan
Newyork
And i know its not a country but Disney World looks like hell on earth, so does Las Vegas.

Because these threads come up all the time on here, and they're just a way of people congratulating themselves on being mentally lazy and incurious, and confirming it by having their own baseless prejudices corroborated by other people's equally baseless prejudices.

Haha yes , this is exactly it.

Lynn from Bedford has never been further than the out of town Tesco but she'd NEVER go to Paris😅
