What place/city would you never visit that others love?

Paris and New York for me. They don't appeal at all. Not just the amount of tourists but when I've seen of them on tv and videos they don't look attractive. I'm open to being told I'm wrong. I don't like London but would visit if I had to. I've been a few times for shows and sport etc. I always feel grubby after a visit.
I do like some cities. Favourites are Edinburgh and Barcelona. Barcelona is rife with pickpockets though so you have to be on your guard.

My ideal holiday is walking in the lakes but I still enjoy the odd city break.

So is there anywhere that is popular that doesn't appeal to you?

New York. I’ve got London ❤️

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 28/04/2026 15:26

I've been to Australia because I went for work, but I wasn't ever really interested and I wouldn't bother going back.

Have also never been interested in most of the USA. However, I would go to New York at some point - just not while Trump administration is in place.

Dubai has no appeal for me either.

There really aren't that many places where I wouldn't go tbh. Just some that interest me more than others.

whymadam · 28/04/2026 15:28

New Zealand has beautiful scenery, breathtaking, so ideal for the outdoorsy tourist. Not much else going on tbh, but the people are lovely. Wouldn't rush back.
Most people are crazy about Cape Town. Again, beautiful scenery around the coast, historic winelands, pretty hotels but under the surface, it's a dirty, dangerous dump. Crime is rife, off the charts.

I've loved Amsterdam, Utrecht and Bruges.

Australia. Everyone else seems to rave about it but it's so far down my list of places I want to visit that if I die without going i won't feel regret. With the exception of gaining understanding of the indigenous people, I dont see what culture there is there? Similarly nature outside of the great barrier reef. My ignorance is know. Also everything wants to kill you lol
I am fully aware I'm writing off a country 50 plus times larger than the UK in one fell swoop.

Sooooo agree hated it both times I’ve been there. And Paris is a shithole.
a amazing city is Singapore, totally fabulous!

I forgot about there. Oh God no.

I was there for a couple of nights last year, as we flew home from there after a US holiday. We stayed on the Strip. The place is an absolute dump! I felt like I was going to have a panic attack the whole time as there are no windows in any of the Strip hotels, and you can't just cross the road on foot from one side to the other. It was so claustrophobic.

MrsShawnHatosy · 28/04/2026 15:36

I visited Las Vegas in the early 80s and it was a shithole. I know there’s more there now but I still wouldn’t ever go back.

I love Paris and New York. And I loved Australia and NZ. I can’t think of anywhere other than LV that I wouldn’t want to go back to.

Tell me what you love about it? I'm all for being changed. The only people I know who've been raved about shopping. I'll have a Google too.

All those yawning. How many threads would there be if all we did was advanced search and posted on those? And I'm all for being convinced otherwise about my choices. I genuinely can't see the appeal of Paris, Dubai and New York but am open to discussion about why I'm wrong, hence posting on AIBU. Although even chat brings out aibi fans nowadays.
I know people who would baulk at walking 10 miles through hills. But I love it. I doubt I'd convince them to though. We're all different.

I’m surprised you genuinely can’t see the appeal of Paris or New York. I’m not desperate to visit either of them again any time soon, but I find it very easy to understand the appeal of them to other people.

Jaddf · 28/04/2026 15:56

Why all the Dubai and Gulf hate? We had Christmas there recently absolutely loved it. My DC are actively career searching for the UAE and the Gulf in general. Dubai is really packed and hectic but many other areas.

As an Indian, India will always be home. Hoping to go in a few months. I love it there.

muddyford · 28/04/2026 16:03

Malta. Friends went last spring and said they didn’t hear any birdsong. That's because Maltese hunters shoot birds on migration. And the EU does sweet FA about enforcing its own directives.

You don’t like Paris, New York or London? I have lived in all three cities and they are all incredible in their own ways. I don’t think you and I would get along! Having said which, I love Edinburgh too and I’m going to Barcelona for the first time soon so I’m pleased to hear you like that one!

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 28/04/2026 16:06

Same here, was underwhelmed by both Paris and New York. Rome was beautiful but the people were rude and grumpy. One place everyone seems rave over and I loathe it, is Brighton. You'd honestly have to pay me to live there.

Have you been living under a rock?

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 28/04/2026 16:08

And yes, Barcelona I've been to twice, I do like it but it's massively spoilt by the sheer number of pickpockets and Roma gypsy begging gangs who are aggressive and fucking annoying.

New York. I’ve got London ❤️

Funnily enough, though I love NYC it became leas amazing to me when I moved to London. Probably because I get most of what I love about NYC and so much more in London.

I am hoping to visit India for maybe 4 weeks when I turn 50. Never been but keen to experience it.

I have been to Dubai but was not a fan of- too superficial and conceited and sterile. Kind of reminds me of Singapore (not a fan of Singapore either.)

I did quite like Doha though. Although it may have changed now

I live in London and it feels quintessentially London and quintessentially UK to me.

Whereabouts? I think that is key...

OldieButBaddie · 28/04/2026 16:16

Dubai really doesn't appeal, I hate shopping and huge fancy hotels and influencers give me the creeps
Saudi - no explanation needed
Canaries - if I want winter sun I want it properly hot! I have nothing against the Canaries per se
Skiing in the US - I hear rumour that they don't put the bars down on chairlifts which would give me conniptions
The US in general at the moment due to the psycho in charge and the gun issues though I do occasionally have to go for work
Finland - went once and really didn't like it, the food was terrible and I wasn't a fan in general
Cornwall in school holidays is a total no go for me
I am not a huge fan of Paris either but love London and NYC

Where in India? Hope you have fun if you go.

HarryVanderspeigle · 28/04/2026 16:17

Anywhere that's hot and the purpose of going there is to lounge around a pool or beach. I will get too hot and while I can cool down in the water, I will get sun burn. Give me frigid misery any day!

I don’t think it is. Everywhere I travel in London feels quintessentially London / UK to me. I have lived in South East London, North London, back in South and spend time all over. All of it simply feels like “home”.
