AIBU / Ridiculous re putting extra mileage on my car

MileageWoes · 09/04/2026 11:28

DH works from home, I work full time in the office. He is having major car trouble and will be without a car for the next few weeks. Obviously he doesn't need a car for work but he has a hobby that he travels to so is using my car morning and evening to do this. It's a 40 mile round trip, twice a day so means that he's putting over 500 miles extra on my car every week! I think he should cut back to once a day until he gets his own car back and he thinks I am being very unreasonable as it will only be for 3/4 weeks.

I WILL NOT BE DISCLOSING WHAT THE HOBBY IS! (I don't want to out myself and it's really really not relevant to my question)

I really couldn’t get worked up about this. As long as he pays for the fuel.

I do 1100 miles a month!!! Every month.

But the OP's husband is doing twice your mileage for his hobby.

Equivalent of 26,000 miles pa.

Don't you think that's a lot for a hobby?

MrsMitford3 · 09/04/2026 17:27

I bet it is rowing

Yeah, I thought that. Or as another poster suggested, cold water swimming. Or bog snorkelling? Canal vaulting? Extreme cheese-rolling? I'm far more invested in this arcane "hobby" than dreary old car mileage arguments.

I don't have a strong opinion about the car mileage but I am sure I won't be the only one agog about a hobby he does twice a day, every day. Potentially HIBU for that.

I'd guess he owns a horse that is kept away from their house at a day livery yard whare he has to tend to the horse am and pm

I know you dont want people to speculate about his hobby, but I have concluded as its early mornings and late evenings, its either fishing or dogging :)

bigboykitty · 09/04/2026 17:56

I don't care what his hobby is, but it's ridiculous to have the lifestyle of a single man when he has a partner and children. I'd possibly cap his use of your car at 2 weeks and tell him that after that, he's on his own.

Octavia64 · 09/04/2026 18:00

Very few people do cold water swimming twice in one day.

i do know people who do it pretty much every day but they mostly live very very close to a river.

Not
A
Horse

OK,if its not a horse that needs twice daily care or a human or other animal that rely on him.
Its not life and death he goes to said hobby,I should just call it a draw on the hobby while car is out of action

dailyconniptions · 09/04/2026 18:13

Stupid bloody self centred carry on. Especially with fuel the price it is and the environmental impact of something completely non essential. I'd tell him to lay off for a bit.

DisforDarkChocolate · 09/04/2026 18:36

Horses, he can't not go.

Rowing, he can suck up missing one each day.

What takes a month to repair?

He would be driving his own car anyway, people are allowed to have hobbies and travel to things they want to you know!!

I was joking, because secret hobbies on MN often turn out to be cycling. Grin

Noooo. Look at the facts.

could be outing if revealed

It’s dogging innit!

I think golf too

A round of golf is probably a minimum of 2.5 to 3 hours. That twice a day plus 2 round trips of 40 miles each.

That's a total of 7 - 8 hours per day

Usernamenotfound1 · 09/04/2026 21:42

TherapistInATabard · 09/04/2026 15:59

I thought rowing, @ChrisTheBastard !

I think I’d be more worried about the cost of fuel at the moment (have mostly only read the OP’s posts, so I’m probably not the first to mention this!).

Even rowing though, surely it’s be more reasonable and cost effective to buy a concept 2 and do one row erg at home and one on water row. I can’t see why you’d need to do two water sessions.

o/p has said it’s not a competitive hobby anyway so why is he training like an Olympian if he’s not competing. Missing a few weeks or sessions isn’t going to stop his selection for the world championships or the oxbridge boat race.

i honestly can’t think of any “hobby” which would necessitate 2x a day 5 days a week, and not weekends which is more normal for “hobbies”. It’s not horses and not competitive sport 🤷‍♀️

that’s why I don’t think o/p is BU, because that amount of time, money and effort on a hobby is unreasonable. The car mileage is irrelevant.

without knowing the what the hobby is and why it needs that level of time and commitment it’s impossible to know who is BU.

ThatLemonBee · 09/04/2026 23:42

And ? 500 mikes is nothing I do that in one week . It’s your husband not a friend or someone else

I could believe it… if it wasn’t twice a day! You’d be knackered!

500 miles a week. Apparently. I'm struggling to work out what kind of hobby would need attendance twice a day, every day though.

I suspect he may have a horse that needs care twice a day 🤔

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 10/04/2026 16:58

I think this is tricky, my husband has an aging car and we reckon (it's on 120 000 miles) it's maybe got another 5 or 10 thousand miles in it. If I "used up" 2000 sooner then we'd need a new one sooner. Having said that, it's our joint money that'd pay for it, and legally as we are married it all belongs to both of us - we just run our family finances that way. So for me, it's more a chat of "well we will have to buy me a new car sooner if we add the miles on - have we agreed a budget for that and saved the money/do we have a plan". If his view is "well thats your problem/you need to have your own money for that" then I can see that issue and you're fair to say no. If you combine savings and both your finances go to both your cars - then it isn't a problem.
