AIBU - mini eggs and mum

Housemovehopeful2024 · 31/03/2026 21:30

My daughter is almost 7. I am not a fan of her having mini eggs due to the risk of choking (not precious about other chocolate or sweets - it’s just the risk of choking I’m worried about). I have told my mum this but despite that and reminding her, she seems to repeatedly give them to her. One week it’ll be a chocolate yogurt with mini eggs, the next week mini egg cakes (only one egg per cake so perhaps less of an issue?) or a small egg with mini eggs in. This week, they made Easter cakes with the smarties equivalent of mini eggs (still the same size and shape). AIBU to be irked by this or am I being too precious?

YABU - stop being so pernickety
YANBU - mini eggs are a hazard and in any event she should listen to your wishes

Doesn’t even matter if it’s unreasonable (it’s not) - if you’ve told your mum to avoid one food which is easily avoidable and she ignores you, that’s annoying and I would be cross

likelysuspect · 31/03/2026 21:34

When you said you're 'not a fan' - is that how you phrased it with her, or did you say, 'dont give her any mini eggs'?

I dont think they're a choking risk for a child that age unless she has particular needs you havent mentioned which affect how she eats, ie gulping food down, but equally you get to make the decisions

Housemovehopeful2024 · 31/03/2026 21:35

Thanks for the replies so far. No additional needs.

I dont personally get it but

You've said no to something, for a legitimate reason - she needs to respect it.

The best way to combat shit like this is to do your best never to rely on her.

Does she not have teeth?

Does she not have teeth?

People with teeth can choke, hope this helps

TheatreTraveller · 31/03/2026 21:38

I would not give them to an under 5.
But a 7-yr old yes. Teach them how to eat them safely, they could get them at parties, from friends or lots of other places.

OnTheGoSlow · 31/03/2026 21:38

@Housemovehopeful2024 I felt that way about grapes and yes, I would have been extremely annoyed if my DM went against my wishes.

It’s a simple request to follow, it’s not as though we’re short of alternative chocolate.

Giftspread · 31/03/2026 21:39

I think it said not gor under 4s on thr packet I scoffed recently, so I think you're being OTT. When are you going to allow whole grapes? On her wedding day?

PinkCatCushion · 31/03/2026 21:40

Age 7 it’s fine.

Pistachiocake · 31/03/2026 21:41

Teachers used to give them out, and at parties etc for 7 year olds I would never have thought not to give these (obviously unless any of the children had SEN/medical needs), so while some people might say you can ask her to give/not give foods on any whim, I would just be aware that pretty much everyone would do this, so you would need to say it to everyone she might come in contact with.

Eenameenadeeka · 31/03/2026 21:41

If she was a toddler I'd definitely agree, but I think 7 year olds are okay to eat them. She should still listen though, there are plenty of other things she could eat and respect what you are asking.

Yeah, this. I'm not sure how clear you've been with your mum though?

FancyCatSlave · 31/03/2026 21:42

My DD is 6.5, I’ve been fine with mini eggs since she was 5 but we have some rules. She has to eat them sitting down, no messing about and she knows to crunch them immediately.

Her class made cakes with them at school today so it passed an EYFS/Y1 risk assessment I think it’s a bit OTT to not allow them.

Tryagain26 · 31/03/2026 21:43

Mini eggs are not a choking hazard for a 7 year old

youalright · 31/03/2026 21:43

You may be unreasonable but I agree with you I'm the same with my kids I'm terrified of them choking i also only let them have lollies if they sat still to eat them. I was still cutting my kids grapes until they where in secondary school 🙈

properidiot · 31/03/2026 21:43

A friend of mine had to administer first aid on a 3 year old who choked on a mini egg. He was fine thankfully - but if she hadn't been there I dread to think what may have happened. They are just the perfect storm for choking in kids, the size, they are smooth and hard. Not worth the risk imo. There are many other chocolate treats you can get for kids!

tripleginandtonic · 31/03/2026 21:43

I always taught my dc from young to bite into their food, like grapes, mini eggs etc.

Housemovehopeful2024 · 31/03/2026 21:45

Ah this is helpful. It looks as though I am being unreasonable. It seems most people think it’s because mini eggs should be allowed by age 7 and therefore it’s reasonable for my mum to disregard what I’ve asked?

Are you reading the same posts as everyone else?

Posters have agreed that your mum should listen to you

Except you didnt answer my question about what you actually said to your mum?

It's unreasonable of your mum to ignore what your mum to ignore your rules about what to give your daughter.
But mini eggs are not dangerous for 7 year olds.

Heynow87 · 31/03/2026 21:50

My DD (age 7) is prone to choking til the point of vomiting and it terrifies me every time! So I agree, no mini eggs, hot dogs cut lengthways, grapes and cherry tomatoes are quartered and marshmallows are toasted until completely gooey.

Yes I am reading the posts. The poll, however, has IANBU losing which included “in any event your mum should respect your wishes”. Are you not reading the OP?

I said “please can you not give DD mini eggs”.

I’d not thought about marshmallows being risky before!
