AIBU - mini eggs and mum

Housemovehopeful2024 · 31/03/2026 21:30

My daughter is almost 7. I am not a fan of her having mini eggs due to the risk of choking (not precious about other chocolate or sweets - it’s just the risk of choking I’m worried about). I have told my mum this but despite that and reminding her, she seems to repeatedly give them to her. One week it’ll be a chocolate yogurt with mini eggs, the next week mini egg cakes (only one egg per cake so perhaps less of an issue?) or a small egg with mini eggs in. This week, they made Easter cakes with the smarties equivalent of mini eggs (still the same size and shape). AIBU to be irked by this or am I being too precious?

YABU - stop being so pernickety
YANBU - mini eggs are a hazard and in any event she should listen to your wishes

Agreed!

But only on ice cream not just warm and alone!

Blueshoey484 · 31/03/2026 23:05

Does your mum do childcare? Is that when she's giving the eggs? If that's the case go and pay someone else the going rate who won't give your daughter mini eggs. Problem solved

Don't use your family for childcare and then moan. Pay someone else

pinkpony88 · 31/03/2026 23:06

My stepdaughter is a paramedic and has made me sufficiently scared of mini eggs that I don’t even eat them if I’m on my own in the house - and I’m nearly 50! 🤣

Out HV has advised grapes cut until 8 as they had a recent death in that age. I would srill split mini eggs

I didnt know HV worked with 8 year olds?

What if there is a choking incident of a 12 year old, will grapes be cut for 12 year olds?

Sunshine1500 · 31/03/2026 23:07

7year old at grans, I think just they should just eat what gran gives feed them. I wouldn’t gove my mum rules for feeding after baby years.

When DD was teething my mum suggested rubbing a bit of brandy on her gums.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 31/03/2026 23:11

I don’t think mini eggs are actually dangerous for 7 yos (although I am no expert as my two are now older and your forget).

However, I think your Mum should respect your wishes.

There are so many types of chocolate out there, it seems
really strange she’s picking on the one thing you’ve asked her not to buy.

It’s a power play, and a crap one at that.

If she’d had any subtlety she’d have followed the instruction but bought something else of a
similar size and shape, like malteasers.

Why?🧐

Wineaddict · 31/03/2026 23:14

You’re not being unreasonable as you’ve asked your mom not to give her them.
But, she’s 7, not a toddler so should be able to eat mini eggs.
Does she eat sausages? They’re a proper choking hazard along with the obvious grapes due the their shape and size. But again, at 7 this shouldn’t be an issue.

People with teeth can choke, hope this helps

Other foods than mini eggs can cause choking, so why are they being singled out? Hope THAT helps.

Mumwithbaggage · 31/03/2026 23:15

Never thought of them as a choking risk so mine ate them from pre-school age I'm sure, but if you say no your mum should do what you say.

I do think you are being over cautious but as the parent, it's absolutely your shout.

Which bit? My post might be lots of things but not sure how it’s cringeworthy?

It was a silly thing to write and an unkind dig at someone! You know it.

Orangy · 31/03/2026 23:16

If I’ve learned nothing else from this thread - and I haven’t - it’s that you can choke on things other than mini eggs and you can still choke even when you have teeth.

I presume the HV said it as advice for the future, no?

The HV service 'had a death at that age'

I cant scroll back and check the exact wording but I think that was it.

bellabelly · 31/03/2026 23:31

A few years ago when we were organising a PTA Easter event thing, the Head teacher (primary school) banned us using mini-eggs due to them being a choking hazard for the children. I must admit that I rolled my eyes (metaphorically!) at this decree but a quick google showed a horrible news story about a 5 year old child dying from choking on one. This was despite her mum trying to use first aid to dislodge the egg.

LBFseBrom · 31/03/2026 23:33

I'd have thought a seven year old would be able to chew mini eggs well enough, have never heard of them being a choking danger for that age. Younger, yes.

However if you say she shouldn't have them, your mother needs to respect that.
Why is she so obsessed with Easter eggs anyway? It's not Easter until Sunday.

bellabelly · 31/03/2026 23:35

Orangy · 31/03/2026 23:12

If she’d had any subtlety she’d have followed the instruction but bought something else of a

But it's the hard shell and the solidness of the chocolate, not just the size and shape that poses such a risk. I am guessing that a malteser would much more quickly start to melt in the throat. Although I wouldn't want to test my theory.

franklymydearscarlett · 31/03/2026 23:39

Oh come on the shops have been full of Easter eggs since Boxing Day. It might not be Easter but people have been chomping away at mini eggs for weeks now for goodness sake.

OP I’m paranoid about choking, my DS is away on a school trip this week and when getting his snacks I deliberately didn’t get him any mini eggs and he’s a teenager. I know that’s crazy obviously but teen boys do daft things like sit at the back of the coach and try to catch sweets with their mouths etc.

MrsMuggin · 31/03/2026 23:39

I voted YANBU. Its about levels of risk. Mini eggs have a higher risk than other chocolates due to their shape and smooth hard shell. When there's aisles full of chocolate of all shapes and sizes to choose from, why would you choose the one with more risk attached. My 6yo hasn't had mini eggs, which is a conscious choice. He's quite happy with other chocolate so why take the risk.
