AIBU - mini eggs and mum

Housemovehopeful2024 · 31/03/2026 21:30

My daughter is almost 7. I am not a fan of her having mini eggs due to the risk of choking (not precious about other chocolate or sweets - it’s just the risk of choking I’m worried about). I have told my mum this but despite that and reminding her, she seems to repeatedly give them to her. One week it’ll be a chocolate yogurt with mini eggs, the next week mini egg cakes (only one egg per cake so perhaps less of an issue?) or a small egg with mini eggs in. This week, they made Easter cakes with the smarties equivalent of mini eggs (still the same size and shape). AIBU to be irked by this or am I being too precious?

YABU - stop being so pernickety
YANBU - mini eggs are a hazard and in any event she should listen to your wishes

Thanks everyone. It’s interesting to see all of the perspectives.

To reply to the PP about what she said when I mentioned it - she said she makes sure she crunches them.

I think perhaps I need to be less uptight about allowing mini eggs (the microwave idea is a good one) but still think my mum should listen to me, even if she does think I’m excessively paranoid.

I do tend to still chop up grapes, partly habit, partly because I think why not reduce the risk? - but then I actually prefer them chopped up so I do this for myself too (not because I’m concerned about my own choking risk).

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable but I am absolutely terrified of mini eggs because you hear so many horror stories about them and I am generally very overly anxious about my children choking anyway😳

Where are you hearing all these “horror stories” about mini eggs?

this is honestly the first time I’ve heard of them being a choking hazard. I wouldn’t have even thought about it unless my kids were very young (under 5).

Arcticbattle32 · 31/03/2026 22:22

My kids are older now but I always used to worry about mini eggs. You need to be very clear to her - no mini eggs. Perhaps they’re a risk, perhaps they’re not but ether way you are her mum so you make the rules.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 31/03/2026 22:22

You’re obviously over anxious as a smartie is nowhere near the size or shape of a mini egg.

I’d not thought about marshmallows being risky before!

The absolute devil. No one is backslapping a sticky tacky marshmallow from anyone’s airway

Your mum should listen, no matter how batshit she thinks you are.

But at 7yo she should know to bite things like mini eggs, tomatoes, grape, banana rounds, sausage etc. Otherwise when do they become safe?

Don’t think I’ve ever been called batshit before 😂😂 I’m normally seen as quite reasonable!

Smarties are fine (I’m not that anxious). It was the smarties branded eggs, which are basically mini eggs by a different name.

Above 3-4 yo should be fine! My 5 yo would eat them

Obviously your mum should do as you've asked, but what caught my attention was all the bloody food. Is every visit by her predicated on sweets and chocolate? Or are these egg examples? If the former, that's what I'd be paying attention to.

She does always provide a lot of treats (once sometimes twice a week). That’s food and also gifts which is excessive IMO.

Happytaytos · 31/03/2026 22:26

With grapes I'd be teaching her to bite too. At 7 she's going to be going more and more places to eat out of your sight. She's more likely to choke at a friend's if she doesn't know to bite a grape and is given them whole.

BringBackCatsEyes · 31/03/2026 22:27

Telling someone how much they cost would cause anyone to choke!

BertieBotts · 31/03/2026 22:27

You are watching too many online safety videos.

Bashing mini eggs up with a rolling pin is borderline unhinged and a bit sad. I am imagining heartbroken DC who just want a whole egg! (That was a reply, not the OP, but they also had a 7yo).

Sometimes I think this headline is true but replace "reddit" with "parenting social media". https://www.cartoonshateher.com/p/does-everyone-on-reddit-have-ocd

Does Everyone on Reddit Have OCD?

@Housemovehopeful2024 you could book your mum onto a first aid course. Suggest it, and if she’s not keen, she’ll soon stop giving them to her.

Appleandcidergravy · 31/03/2026 21:56

I would just get her to warm up the mini eggs for about 15seconds in the microwave if she does give them to her.... Middle is gooey and less if a choking hazard....
Also warm mini eggs are amazing!!! And I think they are a choking hazard even for adults ..

I agree that OPs DM should do as she’s asked, however chocolate has no place in a microwave and should be served from the fridge!

Warm chocolate … no!

Pandasarethebest · 31/03/2026 22:29

I totally agree. I once nearly chocked on a mini egg as a teen (kinda inhaled it). It was scary plus my youngest nearly choked on ice cubes (real thing even though its ice.)

I was going to say crush them up a bit with a rolling pin and eat them in pieces rather than whole.

Orangy · 31/03/2026 22:30

She could blend them into a paste.

Housemovehopeful2024 · 31/03/2026 22:32

It may have been light hearted but I don’t have OCD. I have a friend who does and it’s pretty debilitating and quite different from being overly conscious of potential dangers for a KS1 child.

My 3 year old came out of nursery with a homemade cake with mini eggs on last week! I swiftly ate them for her of course.

Whataloadoffuss · 31/03/2026 22:32

Don't waste the mini eggs! Smash them with a rolling pin, and swirl into icecream!😋
God this thread has me thinking about my dc's hidden easter treats now that should not have to be replaced again.

Most sensible suggestion yet. My pestle and mortar doesn’t get enough use.

I agree with this. Keeping her safe is more about teaching her how to keep herself safe at this age.

Popoverblues · 31/03/2026 22:34

Usernamenotfound1 · 31/03/2026 22:04

She’s 7 though. Much bigger, the trachea will be bigger and mini eggs won’t be big enough to block the airway.

o/p is unreasonable not letting her dd have mini eggs due to a choking risk.

if she’s said to her mum not to give mini eggs then mum should respect that. If she’s said not to give them because of the choking risk specifically, then I can see why mum still gives them, because they aren’t a choking risk for a 7 year old.

because they aren’t a choking risk for a 7 year old.

I worked in A&E for a long time. I promise you that isn't true.

As any good mother would!

JustSawJohnny · 31/03/2026 22:34

Not even about the mini eggs, for me.

If you've repeatedly asked DM to not do something and she repeatedly does it - wholly unnecessarily too, I'd argue - you have a problem.

I had a thing about big grapes not being cut in half when DS was younger.

What other people thought about that was irrelevant.

Your kid. Your choice.

there are plenty of other easter chocolate options!
