Are you a 'wavy' family?

My parents, family and I were always the ones who waved when some guests or family left the house. My husband never ever waves at me when he goes out - I really miss the waving!! Do you do it?

When I lived with my parents we were a wavy family.

We are more, quick wave and shut the door.

Unless it's my parents then I feel compelled to stand there with the heat flying out the front door feeling slightly resentful, waving.

oviraptor21 · 29/03/2026 19:46

I wave 👋

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 29/03/2026 19:48

I don't like the idea of shutting the door until the person is out of sight. Always see people out and then stand at the door until they are gone. I don't always wave, but I do see them off properly

Edit: we have a porch, so I don't worry about heating escaping as I can shut the inner door. If I didn't have a porch I may not stand there in the doorway because I'd be worried about losing heat and about the dog escaping so I'd probably stand at a window or something lol

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/03/2026 19:49

I don't mind a wave but I loathe prolonged goodbyes.

I can't stand being at social events and being expected to say goodbye to people (complete with hugs and kisses) individually. Or having to stand on the doorstep for half an hour saying goodbye to people.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 29/03/2026 19:50

If it's family, I walk them out to the car and stand and wave till they drive round the corner

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 29/03/2026 19:50

We not only wave, we walk to the car and wave each other off until the car is out of sight! 🤣 👋 In bad weather, my parents wave from a window.

Morepositivemum · 29/03/2026 19:50

Yes!!👋👋👋

WoollyandSarah · 29/03/2026 19:50

I grew up with wavy family, but didn't really like it. I'd rather say goodbye at the door and then get into my car without being watched. My Dad still waves us off. I find that annoying as I want to set up my sat nav and whatever I want to listen to, not worry about getting gone so that he can go inside.

chateauneufdupapa · 29/03/2026 19:51

I hate when people see me off! I feel pressured to quickly enter address in my sat nav etc while they watch!

Theunamedcat · 29/03/2026 19:51

My son has school transport i stand on the step and wave him off i used to wave off my dad too my mom and sister not so much

JustAnotherWhinger · 29/03/2026 19:53

i grew up in a “I’m off” “bye” household.

DH’s family are waves, hugs, walk you to your car, watch until you leave types. 20 years in and I still hate the pressure of driving away with people watching. I haven’t stalled a car in donkeys years yet I’m still convinced I will when there’s a queue of people watching me pull away 😂😂

OhBettyCalmDown · 29/03/2026 19:53

My granny was a waver but no one else is. I really wouldn’t want the fuss of my husband waving me off down the road lol

CallingOnTheMegaphone · 29/03/2026 19:53

One of my favourite memories of my granny is of her waving every time we drove away from her house. She would wave until we were out of sight. I would wriggle round in my seat and look out the back window from the end of the road, and see the wee speck that was my granny, waving.

Aw same!

But….we don’t wave. It’s a bit odd when you think about it. My mum and dad come out and stand in the street to wave when I leave but I want to set up my music etc so I usually just tell them to go back in 😬😂

anon4net · 29/03/2026 19:57

We are a wavy family, especially for guests.

When my teens go out I will see them to the door but may not wave until they are fully out of sight but will usually watch them walk to the end of the drive and turn onto the path.

Ovaryinatwist · 29/03/2026 19:59

I’m from a wavy family and I’ve made a wavy family 👋

Auroraloves · 29/03/2026 19:59

Yes. My Gran used to wave us off at the door and didn’t shut it until we were round the corner. I miss her

Meadowflower2023 · 29/03/2026 20:01

I’m from a none wavy family but I am now a very wavy, blowy kissy family.

dudsville · 29/03/2026 20:01

I don't know how to vote but I'm a waver, I come from a family of wavers, I married a waver who comes from a long line of wavers.

NoSoupForU · 29/03/2026 20:14

No. Why the fuck would I be waving when I've already said goodbye?

TokyoSushi · 29/03/2026 20:16

Tricky one here, I do not come from a very wavy family, so I’m not really a waver, however I love being waved at by other wavers but find it awkward to reciprocate because I’m ’not one…’ 😬

PrincessJasmine3 · 29/03/2026 20:19

I’ve never thought about this but omg yes we’re a wavy family! 😂
I pulled off my dad’s drive yesterday and he was still there waving me off. I even stand with the baby and wave my DH in past the window when he gets home 🙈

Awkward Smile And Wave GIF

We're wavers, get it from my mum's side. I remember my Granny used to chase us down the drive waving and then shut the driveway gate behind us. I stand waving at our car when my DH drives off 😂

Disclaimer, not every single time, I'm not completely batshit.

It's not too late to become one of us 👋
