Are you a 'wavy' family?

My parents, family and I were always the ones who waved when some guests or family left the house. My husband never ever waves at me when he goes out - I really miss the waving!! Do you do it?

My parents used to stand at their sitting room window and wave until we were off the drive and pulling away. They’re dead now, but sometimes we drive past their house and wave anyway.

We are not wavers in my own family. Hug and a kiss and that’s it.

Ah see waving is preferable to a hug and a kiss for me!

SabrinaThwaite · 29/03/2026 22:20

We do it to the (grown up) kids and shout ‘love you’ very loudly at the same time.

My family were not wavy at all.

StephensLass1977 · 29/03/2026 22:23

I work at home, partner leaves in the car anytime between 6am and 8am. I always pull the living room blind up and wave at him as he's reversing, and until he drives out of sight. The dogs watch from the window, too. It's just a bit of fun.

ApriloNeil2026 · 29/03/2026 22:23

i do but only for certain people

Lostearrings · 29/03/2026 22:26

We definitely were growing up. I think a combination of living in London for a few years where people would walk down the road to the nearest tube or bus stop rather than get in their car followed by a having children and moving to the suburbs so visitors might take a while to get into the car and leave and I generally had a fairly chaotic scene waiting for me back inside the house

StillCreatingAName · 29/03/2026 22:29

Waves at the airport gates are always a difficult wave. Complex in terms of when the best time is to wave- should it be after hugs or handshakes, or instead of those? How long to wave for, stopping and restarting again. Not letting emotions take over by crying in public for happy or sad reasons, which both disrupt your waving style. Even a hardcore waving family are a bit off their game at the airport.

kangaroomouse · 29/03/2026 22:29

This thread has really made me laugh. I’m a waver and my husband has a funny tradition of the car window being down and having the hand out as we leave gesture ☺️

Omg yes definitely. We go outside to do a thorough wavy job. Don't stop until they disappear from sight.

I'm always very disappointed by those who don't reciprocate.

This has really tickled me, a thorough wavy job!

DH and I are both from wavy families and without really thinking about it we’ve definitely spawned more wavers – keep it running down the generations. The kids and I waved him off to the dump the other day. In fairness the littlest is a toddler who is deep in the wavy phase. Long may it continue! My lovely grandparents used to wave us down the street and my parents still wave us off, although I also feel the pressure to leave quickly despite wanting to set up my playlist! I love it, it’s an adorable human quirk.

Picklelily99 · 29/03/2026 22:34

We're wavy! Stand at the door until people drive away.

Kickinthenostalgia · 29/03/2026 22:40

Tbh I never really thought about it… my grandparents were. I think sometimes we wave, depends who it is.

2Rebecca · 29/03/2026 22:44

I hate being waved off as usually if it's a long drive I want to set the sat nav sort out my music etc before driving off. If someone is determined to stand outside in the cold until I have gone I feel obliged to drive round the corner and do all this

Booboobagins · 29/03/2026 22:50

I wave at the end of team meetings, lol!

Never realised that others don't wave cos once someone waves, everyone waves ime, lol!

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 29/03/2026 22:51

I wave at the end of an informal Teams meeting

Blinky21 · 29/03/2026 22:53

We are stand on the step and wave until you have disappeared down the street in this house but I never see my neighbours do it so I wonder if we are weird

CotswoldsCamilla · 29/03/2026 22:54

Wavers here and from a long line of wavers. But it’s ritualistic. For example, DH and I tend not to on a daily basis. Same with the DC. Except school, I wave them off to school. If they look back I want them to see I’m still there (waving).

If it’s raining and guests are leaving, I’ll say something like, “it’s very wet, I’ll go in” so they know there’s a reason I’m not staying out to wave them off.
I also wave at the airport; if my parents drop me off at the departure drop off, I’ll stand and wave until they pull out and they’re out of sight.

I find it oddly comforting, waving. It’s a small way of making them feel like they matter to me.

Strawberrydelight78 · 29/03/2026 22:59

No we're not in my family we don't even see each other out the door.😂😂😂 We just say see ya and see ourselves out. Only people outside the family get seen to the door and we don't wave.

TheBluntSeal · 29/03/2026 22:59

We're a wavy family. My parents wave us off, we wave them off. If I go to the train station nearest postbox with my college aged DD as she heads off for the day I wave over enthusiastically. She eye rolls obviously.

I also wave when random people wave at me - on rides at theme parks, kids waving from trains etc. I like the little hand-wave of acknowledgement people do while driving by just lifting fingers from the steering wheel.

I've just met a new tutoring student I'll be working with at home (SEND) and I loved when I arrived and she peeked round a doorway and gave me a little wave (I waved back of course). I think it made our introduction less awkward for me as well, I have ADHD and was overthinking everything about how to make it go smoothly

RocketLollyPolly · 29/03/2026 23:01

My grandparents used to wave us off and now my children love waving at guests when they leave.

I’m intrigued about @PistachioTiramisu wanting your husband to wave. When would he do this? Going to work, for a run, the shops etc? I feel like it’s reserved for occasional guests or residents going on long trips.

I’m going to be very conscious of my waving now!

NotMyRealAccount · 29/03/2026 23:02

I'm very wavy, from a very wavy family. DH has learned with time.

user1492757084 · 29/03/2026 23:23

We wave. I think it is from the olden day Irish granny who always waved until she could see us no more.

She said it could be the last time we see her and we need to remember her welcoming home.

Funfarer5 · 29/03/2026 23:23

Oh no I find it so cringey and awkward. Not the waving itself, but it makes me feel super pressured to be very quick at getting in the car and driving off, which is hard with two kids who love faffing.

I've been known to start reversing out of a driveway before everyone is clipped in in the hope the waver will just go away while we sort ourselves out.

DH is a waver and I find myself pulling him in a "leave them alone" kind of way when people are in their car and we're standing there staring at them put an address in their satnav or whatever. Shudder.

EvieBB · 29/03/2026 23:34

NoSoupForU · 29/03/2026 20:14

No. Why the fuck would I be waving when I've already said goodbye?

It's just really kind and sweet...

Socrossrightnow · 29/03/2026 23:35

Yes definitely a waving family here too. When I was little we used to go on walks across the valley from my grans house. She would look out of her window with binoculars and wave a white sheet so we could spot her. We would jump up and down and wave back!

Lavenderandbrown · 29/03/2026 23:38

We all wave. Not so much on a work day but anytime we have visitors or when my dc leave the house after visiting. Walk them out ask if they have everything and wave them off. As soon as they back down the drive and turn to head down the road go inside and make sure they didn’t forget anything…and it’s not unusual they have. It’s well known if you are called right after you left the house just start turning around because you forgot something. Then I stand at the end of the drive hand it in via the drivers window and re wave them off.

it’s very true one day you will-have given
your last hug your last thank you last kiss to your dear parents and then waved them off. One day only one of them will come back to visit.

DogPawsMudFur · 29/03/2026 23:43

Never thought about it but yes, we all stand outside the house waving visitors off - with pets involved too - and then my youngest will run up the road after the car like a mad dog trying to chase it. Always feel
forlorn for a few minutes when people leave. My parents stand at their front door until I drive off so I guess I inherited it.
