Are you a 'wavy' family?

My parents, family and I were always the ones who waved when some guests or family left the house. My husband never ever waves at me when he goes out - I really miss the waving!! Do you do it?

My family isn't, but dh's very much is. To the extent of running a little way along the road, jumping up and down, waving and shouting like loons. I was a bit surprised the first time I saw them do it Grin MIL, in her late 70s, still does it when we leave their house!

Gonners · 29/03/2026 20:57

I'm not a waver and I find it uncomfortable when leaving the houses of people who are wavers. Because if they're standing at the front door/gate, waving like loons, I feel obliged to wave back and worry that I could be there all day. <Not really, but some of you may know what I mean.>

MsVestibule · 29/03/2026 20:57

We definitely are! My mum (late 70s) was practically doing star jumps at 6am when seeing us off on our holiday!! DH waves when he's popping to Aldi, DD blows kisses, DS gives a little wave when he's closing the gate and going for the school bus.

ScottChegg · 29/03/2026 20:57

I stand and wave to anyone I love who is leaving and going far away so I won't see them for a while. TBF it doesn't take long at all till they're out of sight, only about 200 metres. I don't stand and wave to anyone who is going out then coming back again later, that would be a bit strange.

Asenseofcalm · 29/03/2026 20:59

I wasn’t a waver until my Irish aunt came to visit. Two friends of mine were leaving the house, I said goodbye and shut the door. My aunt hurried me back to the front door with strong words ‘you wave your guests off!’. It was humiliating to reopen the door and randomly start waving at friends who were reversing off the drive, they pulled confused faces whilst I went red, but did awkwardly wave back.

To this day, I wave off before closing the door.

We not only wave, we walk to the car and wave each other off until the car is out of sight! 🤣 👋 In bad weather, my parents wave from a window.

Same here!

We have a fab view of the drive from a big window we can all stand and wave from (weirdos we are) 🤣

Unpaidviewer · 29/03/2026 21:09

I have a toddler so we currently are. He likes to wave at the binmen everyweek and they often give him chocolate. He gives them a Christmas gift.

BrickBiscuit · 29/03/2026 21:11

Wave? We run to the end of the road (it's a one-way street so they have to drive round the block to get out) and wave when they go past again!

canisquaeso · 29/03/2026 21:11

I’m confused. Wave how? Stand outside? At the window? Balcony?

Tacohill · 29/03/2026 21:11

I can see people waving off family they don’t live with but I’ve never heard of anyone’s spouse doing it!

The only way I can imagine someone doing it from the same house is if they’re going on a long trip - not just popping to Asda.

NewZebra · 29/03/2026 21:13

Yep we all wave. I would feel rude closing the door before they’ve driven away so always wave people off 😂

daisychain01 · 29/03/2026 21:14

DH and I are both wavy. If either of us has to go on a business trip, we stand in the kitchen and wave then run to the hall window to keep it going a bit longer 😆

one time, I forgot to wave and DH came back asking where his wave was.😂

I’m confused. Wave how? Stand outside? At the window? Balcony?

You stand on these two things called your feet, either at your open door, or at the window, or yes, balcony if you fancy. Then you raise an arm, or both, and move it either gracefully or frantically from side to side, whilst shouting goodbye and blowing kisses at the same time with your mouth.

N3wUs3rNam3Again · 29/03/2026 21:22

I'm a waver, my kids are wavers, both my (separated) parents are wavers and their parents were wavers, but one of my siblings is most definitely not a waver. She can't get rid of people quickly enough and I actually can't think of a time in my life that's she's waved me or anyone else off.

BirdsDoIt · 29/03/2026 21:24

Love this thread. I’m from a wavy family and my DH is from a wavy family so this has never struck me as something peculiar until now!!
When I was on mat leave, we waved DH off to work every morning, shouting goodbye. Also waved every week without fail to the bin men. On reflection it probably drove the neighbours mad. Now they’re bigger, our children have been known to pursue especially favoured guests as they drive off, waving (like previous poster).
There’s a particularly poignant video on instagram where someone has photographed their parents waving outside their house, for many years, until there’s just one of them, then neither - never fails to make me cry. I wave properly every time anyone goes who I might not see for a while - just in case.

Gremlins101 · 29/03/2026 21:26

Lots of waving!!!!

Gremlins101 · 29/03/2026 21:27

I also love a good beep and wave at a friend if i see them as we are driving through town.

WaltzingWaters · 29/03/2026 21:29

yeah, love a wave!

mindutopia · 29/03/2026 21:30

Dh’s family is very wavy. We must position ourselves as a family unit in the drive in formation and wave off any in-laws with glee (frankly, I do feel glee to see them leave). Once MIL was so distracted waving back at us all that she took the turn up the drive wrong (it’s a long steep track with a 90 degree turn), went up a bank and nearly rolled her car. 🫣 Unless forced, I do not wave people off. They’re lucky I come out to say goodbye.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 29/03/2026 21:32

Only for visitors (friends and relatives) - I wouldn’t do it for someone who lived there.

I hate the whole ritual of saying goodbye - it’s socially so bloody awkward, I’m trying to stand back to give a hint that they are not to try to hug or kiss me!

SMM2020 · 29/03/2026 21:33

We’re a wavy family. My Nan used to wave from the backdoor as we’d park round the back, then she’d be in the front room window waving by the time we had drove down the back road and up past the house. It was lovely when I think about it now.

BeanQuisine · 29/03/2026 21:36

Always a wave as they drive away, and then another wave to return their wave, and then another wave to the front seat passenger who's just realised everyone is waving and also waved, and then another wave to seal the deal.

Then go back inside and pour another cognac.

NigellaDelia · 29/03/2026 21:36

We don't just wave, we do a royal wave!!!! It's a bit of a family joke really ~ I can't remember how it started but we've been doing it for years. We all live a long way apart so visits are infrequent and when we wave goodbye we know we won't be seeing each other for some time. So waving in the style of Queen Elizabeth helps to soften the parting and makes us all smile!

We have a little one in our family who waves at everyone from her pushchair and is always delighted when someone returns the wave!

Snoopy51 · 29/03/2026 21:37

Next thread: do you say your phone number when you answer the landline?

Allthesnowallthetime · 29/03/2026 21:37

My lovely mother in law (and her mother before her) does a double handed flappy wave type thing.

I am just a normal waver.
