Are you a 'wavy' family?

My parents, family and I were always the ones who waved when some guests or family left the house. My husband never ever waves at me when he goes out - I really miss the waving!! Do you do it?

I wave, and I even wave at dogs. I also wave on zoom calls. I will wave until the day I die (or until I lose both arms)

alwaysaghast1992 · 29/03/2026 23:50

My husband would never wave at me as I left, but if I ever visit my mum and dad for ten minutes, they both stand at their front door and wave me off as I turn the car around, then another little wave as I drive past. I love it and will never get tired of it ❤️

its the little things

fabstraction · 29/03/2026 23:51

I think some family members would do a quick wave, but it wasn't a definite thing and varied by person. DH and I usually do wave at one another from the door when the one leaving turns to close the gate.

GentleSheep · 29/03/2026 23:53

Oh yes, dedicated waver here! Also my family used to do that very short barely a toot on the car horn when leaving, maybe two in quick succession! "Byeee wave toot-toot!"

When I was little my gran lived round the corner from me. From my bedroom window I could see the back of her house. At bed time we used to wave to each other....like a wee night night wave 👋
Love these special memories ♥️

Aww, that is so lovely!

Italiangreyhound · 30/03/2026 00:04

Yes.

I think Zoom brought it back big time.

Asenseofcalm · 30/03/2026 00:57

I collected my married-in-aunt from Matthew Broderick’s house once and was surprised he was still at the door waving as I checked my rear-view-mirror for a final glance at the surreal event of where I was before turning the corner off his long drive.

Matthew Broderick is a waver!

deveronvalley · 30/03/2026 01:24

Yes I stand on the doorstep to wave off my parents and adult stepson but not anyone else. When I visit my parents and am leaving, my Dad comes down their long drive and checks the road, gives me thumbs up when all clear 😊 it’s all very pointless as it’s always clear (very rural). When my 13 year old son leaves for school and I’m still in, I wave out the window and he grins and waves back! He always checks if I’m there! I’d feel bad if he looked to the window and I wasn’t there! Waving is great.

Strokethefurrywall · 30/03/2026 02:11

Yep, I grew up in a family of wavers, although I’m not sure my husband/I are wavers as we live overseas on a tiny island and all our mates live 2 mins away.

But when I’m visiting family back in UK, it’s wave central, my parents do it, aunts and uncles! It’s joyous, I love it!

snackattackk · 30/03/2026 02:23

We are wavers 🤣 and I love it! Well we used to joke for years our parents (well my mum mainly) only ever waved my brother off when he left, therefore he was clearly the favourite. My sister and I only started getting waves when we had children 😆. My mum will stand when it's freezing with the door open until we are out of sight. I wfh and my husband does the school run, each morning I stand on the doorstep (even though I've started work) to wave my kids off. If ever I have something pressing and can't wave I feel quite sad 🤣, the waving brings me a bit of joy each day, my kids are primary aged so aren't at the ignoring me stage - yet! My in-laws are wavers too, they also only started after we had children though. My extended family have always done it though even before we had kids. When my brother is driving off he waves but does several prolonged loud pips of the horn (no matter the time of day or night), it's his thing 😆. We are all quite into it!

DeltaVariant · 30/03/2026 02:27

Absolutely not. Can’t stand the fuss or pressure of waving people off.

snackattackk · 30/03/2026 02:29

My sister and parents live quite close to us and on the main road on the way into town, if I'm the passenger I'll message to say passing in a few min and they come to the window to wave 🤣. Gosh we all need to get out more!

Never thought about it but yes, we all stand outside the house waving visitors off - with pets involved too - and then my youngest will run up the road after the car like a mad dog trying to chase it. Always feel
forlorn for a few minutes when people leave. My parents stand at their front door until I drive off so I guess I inherited it.

Aw this is us too - my mum waves me off on her own (since DF died) and my girls would also run up the street after the car when they were little (if it was a close/beloved relative)..... so heartwarming:)

PollyBell · 30/03/2026 04:50

No because there is nothing worse for neighbours for having to hear a racket just because someone is leaving especually when they think using the horn is hilarious

and why does it take an hour to say goodbye? especially at midnight

keepswimming38 · 30/03/2026 05:14

Does this include VW camper family because V Dubs wave as they pass each other. We do this but don’t really wave kids off etc.

ElenOfTheWays · 30/03/2026 05:15

Definitely a wavy family here. The best one I remember from my childhood was when my mum put the car headlights on lighting up my grandparents standing in front of their garage door and they broke into the can can dance. 😂
They were always like that though. Mad as a box of frogs.

Gardenquestion22 · 30/03/2026 05:29

My family are deeply undemonstrative, but massive wavers, till whoever has gone round the corner. Which was quite a long way on old family road, developed strong waving arms.

DHs family, not so much, more ‘yeah, bye’ shut the door. But generally more demonstrative.

Sounds like my in laws (undemonstrative) but huge wavers, and mine (the opposite on both counts).

NormaJoan · 30/03/2026 08:13

I think I’m wavy, with family I’ll put in more effort, but there is an exception. When my DD was a toddler we were passengers in the back of my friend’s car and we waved to a local lorry driver, driving behind us, on and off for about 5 miles. He reciprocated and the waving between me and him has continued ( DD is 40 now). Occasionally, he would pull over and we’d have a chat. Eventually DH got wavy with him too.

EndorsingPRActice · 30/03/2026 08:26

We are wavers and my family always waved me off. Can’t say it has ever resulted in me feeling any pressure or to hurry up when leaving, I take all the time I want to. I don’t wave people off daily, it’s occasional visitors, mostly family, who are lucky enough to get my wave.

lxn889121 · 30/03/2026 08:31

Love a wave.. hate a hug.. despise a kiss...

PistachioTiramisu · 30/03/2026 08:57

FlockofSquirrels · 29/03/2026 21:48

Do you mean going out to wave off extended family or other guests after a visit? Yes, my family did that (and still does).

But you mentioned your DH not waving at you and that's got me confused. I've never been part of a family that waves off people who live together unless it's some big life event sort of occasion. If you're off to work or the store or such it's just a shouted bye/have a good day, usually from another room.

So if my dad didn't wave me off at the end of my visit to them I'd be a bit hurt. But if my dad did go out to wave off his wife as she heads to her Thursday pickleball matches I would probably start worrying about cognitive decline 😂

I understand what you mean! No I wouldn't expect a full-on wave from/to DH when he is going to work, just a sort of fluttery lift of the hand thing! If he is going away for a few days, then I would go out with him and wave him off in the car until out of sight!

Im wavy, my mum is wavy too, stands at the gate until we've gone to the end of the street, my nan used to wave from the side gate, one hand on hip, actually my late MIL was a waver too, and blew kisses😊. My kids arent, they shut the door on their friends as soon as they can, usually with "safe, see ya later bro" from the lad. So we're "from" wavy, but havent managed to make wavers,🤣. Funny thread and brought back some sweet memories of people that arent here anymore.

Ah. No, I don't think I ever wave to people who are in the same room unless I'm on the phone or similar, or if I knew they were hearing impaired. Or babies. If I can say hi or bye at a reasonable volume and trust the person understands me then the wave feels unnecessary and strange.
