Are you a 'wavy' family?

My parents, family and I were always the ones who waved when some guests or family left the house. My husband never ever waves at me when he goes out - I really miss the waving!! Do you do it?

You stand on these two things called your feet, either at your open door, or at the window, or yes, balcony if you fancy. Then you raise an arm, or both, and move it either gracefully or frantically from side to side, whilst shouting goodbye and blowing kisses at the same time with your mouth.

Weird and unnecessary unless it’s someone you barely ever see.

VictoriaEra · 29/03/2026 21:39

Yep. We wave. We even wave at the window of someone is going past on the bus. Don’t stop waving til out of sight.

ilovepixie · 29/03/2026 21:40

I hate people standing at the door waving till I’m out of sight! It’s awkward and embarrassing

NigellaDelia · 29/03/2026 21:41

Not quite the same but I live near an international port and when I'm on the seafront I wave to passengers on the ferries . . . . it's lovely!

JumpinJehoshaphat · 29/03/2026 21:41

My parents used to stand at their sitting room window and wave until we were off the drive and pulling away. They’re dead now, but sometimes we drive past their house and wave anyway.

We are not wavers in my own family. Hug and a kiss and that’s it.

SisStuffication · 29/03/2026 21:43

We wave visitors off down the drive, then I mutter 'thank God we live on a bend'

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 29/03/2026 21:45

Omg yes definitely. We go outside to do a thorough wavy job. Don't stop until they disappear from sight.

I'm always very disappointed by those who don't reciprocate.

Alittlefrustrated · 29/03/2026 21:46

Yes, I'm from a wavy family, however in my own house it is reserved for visitors.

chateauneufdupapa · 29/03/2026 19:51

I hate when people see me off! I feel pressured to quickly enter address in my sat nav etc while they watch!

Same. If people stand and wave I drive round the corner then stop again to get settled properly and sort my sat nav and music and drink etc

Loub1987 · 29/03/2026 21:48

My in laws do this and I think it’s so weird. I don’t need anyone watching me walk down the street.

FlockofSquirrels · 29/03/2026 21:48

Do you mean going out to wave off extended family or other guests after a visit? Yes, my family did that (and still does).

But you mentioned your DH not waving at you and that's got me confused. I've never been part of a family that waves off people who live together unless it's some big life event sort of occasion. If you're off to work or the store or such it's just a shouted bye/have a good day, usually from another room.

So if my dad didn't wave me off at the end of my visit to them I'd be a bit hurt. But if my dad did go out to wave off his wife as she heads to her Thursday pickleball matches I would probably start worrying about cognitive decline 😂

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 29/03/2026 21:51

When I'm leaving my parents I like them to wave, but I HATE when other people do it. I'm confident in my parents' (massive) driveway but I find manoeuvring out of tight spaces stressful enough without the distraction and pressure of people watching/waving. I also HATE long goodbyes! There should be strict laws on this, with a heavy financial penalty for anyone who takes longer than 10 minutes between the preliminary 'Right...!' and driving away.

ilovepixie · 29/03/2026 21:52

I just love how completely bonkers some families are.

daisychain01 · 29/03/2026 21:52

Waving surely doesn't apply if you're coming back the same day eg going to work, that would be weird.

Notsosweetcaroline · 29/03/2026 21:52

I wave off guests but not my husband or vice Versa.

GreyCarpet · 29/03/2026 21:55

My partner's family is 'wavy'. Mine wasn't. I quite like it!

TenInSport · 29/03/2026 22:00

I had wavy grandparents. They would follow me into the hallway and chat to me whilst I put my shoes on, make me check that I had everything I'd arrived with, hug me (always in the order of Grandma then Grandad) and then stand in the doorway and wave until I was out of sight.

When I was young and I used to stay overnight with them my Grandma and I used to wave my Grandad off to work every day through the lounge window.

I would give anything for one last opportunity to look over my shoulder and see them waving. 😢

myinlawsareshittytoo · 29/03/2026 22:00

Sometimes my DH waves me off like he’s directing traffic. Cracks me and DS up. We are a wavy family. And complete idiots too at timesGrin

CallingOnTheMegaphone · 29/03/2026 19:53

One of my favourite memories of my granny is of her waving every time we drove away from her house. She would wave until we were out of sight. I would wriggle round in my seat and look out the back window from the end of the road, and see the wee speck that was my granny, waving.

Aww, that's given me a little lump in my throat! My mum's side of the family are all wavers and I absolutely love it - mostly because we go over the top waving on purpose because we find it funny that we're all a family of wavers! Even my faux-grumpy grandad used to wave until we were gone 😍

If my daughter chooses to have kids, I want to be that wavy granny 😀

BlackCat14 · 29/03/2026 22:08

This is something I have NEVER thought about in my life but yes, I come from a wavy family! And I’ve just thought about my partner and his family, and they are definitely not wavy!

brunettemic · 29/03/2026 22:11

Do you know what I find weird? Waving at the end of a teams meeting, nobody waves at the end of a face to face meeting so why are they doing it on teams?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 29/03/2026 22:11

I had a train track near me. I still wave at trains! I love it when I get a return wave!

SheSaidHummingbird · 29/03/2026 22:15

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/03/2026 19:49

I don't mind a wave but I loathe prolonged goodbyes.

I can't stand being at social events and being expected to say goodbye to people (complete with hugs and kisses) individually. Or having to stand on the doorstep for half an hour saying goodbye to people.

We call this The Farewell Tour. Nothing worse.

Wavy child of non-wavy parents here.

Lifeomars · 29/03/2026 22:16

I wave until I can no longer see them, always feel that if this is the last time I ever saw them, I was smiling, waving and keeping them in sight

ConvolutedCat · 29/03/2026 22:16

Surely these are 2 different things. I’m willing to wave when a guest leaves but are you talking about waving off husband/wife/anyone else you live with?!
