Are you a 'wavy' family?

My parents, family and I were always the ones who waved when some guests or family left the house. My husband never ever waves at me when he goes out - I really miss the waving!! Do you do it?

I wave off guests but I don’t wave when people I live with leave the house (that’s bonkers, isn’t it?)

YerMotherWasAHamster · 29/03/2026 20:23

My family has a different tradition. When its time for your guest to go home, we say get the hell out of my house.

Then we all laugh like we haven't been saying that to each other every visit for the last 20 years.

manaliiiive · 29/03/2026 20:23

Hate it. We’ve said good bye at the door now let me adjust my google maps etc without an audience,

My aunt and uncle were wavers and (for some reason I can’t remember now, there must have been something blocking the left hand turn) my parents used to turn right out of their drive then have to turn round in the cul de sac then go back past their door.

My aunt, uncle and cousin would be standing like loons waiting to wave when we finally passed their door again.

I remember being baffled by it as a child and it feels even more inexplicable to explain now.

So no, definitely not a waver.

RodeoClown · 29/03/2026 20:24

We don’t wave off the people who live here but anyone who doesn’t gets waved off until they are out of sight.

alpenguin · 29/03/2026 20:25

I love a good wave ! I love when a stranger waves at me off a bus or train- doesn’t matter if it’s an adult or a child, it’s just nice. My partner isn’t from a waving family and he literally cannot wave. He tries and does join in with us now but (it’s really hard to describe) he just kind of rigidly flares his fingers and makes a really awkward jerky movement at people.

CatJump · 29/03/2026 20:26

No, but this brings back fond memories of my grandma. She would always stand waving as we left and would stay there until we were out of sight, and we would roll the car windows down and wave back.

manaliiiive · 29/03/2026 20:29

It is sweet how the wavers are so proud about it 🤣 go wavers

Toddlerteaplease · 29/03/2026 20:30

I wave

HandfulOfMoths · 29/03/2026 20:31

We jump up and down and pretend the car leaving has driven over our toes.

prepareforharvest · 29/03/2026 20:32

I am from such a wavy family but haven’t met many others so I’m glad to know you’re all out there 👋. My friend from uni thought it was hilarious when he came to stay and mum sent us to pick up a loaf of bread from Tesco about a 5 minute drive away and she, my dad, my three siblings, and my grandma who was staying at the time all waved us off like we were leaving for an expedition to the arctic!

Ah!

My dad always used to say “thank you for my tea” in a polite-child-coached-by-parent voice.

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 29/03/2026 19:50

We not only wave, we walk to the car and wave each other off until the car is out of sight! 🤣 👋 In bad weather, my parents wave from a window.

This is what we did from when I was little and guest were leaving after coming to stay or visit for the day. I love it!

Itsmetheflamingo · 29/03/2026 20:34

Yes! My dad loved waving and once confessed to a secretly fantasy of us all waving him off to work. Bring back the waving!

MyGingerNinja · 29/03/2026 20:35

I love to wave and be waved at 🥰

This is life affirming

One of my favourite memories of my granny is of her waving every time we drove away from her house. She would wave until we were out of sight. I would wriggle round in my seat and look out the back window from the end of the road, and see the wee speck that was my granny, waving.

Same!!! My folks still stand and wave and I love it. I always wave to them too!

RanchRat · 29/03/2026 20:42

Yes, we wave, my parents never waved at anyone.

Swoop21 · 29/03/2026 20:44

Haha. I’ve had this exact conversation with my husband. He’s from a wavy family, a go around and kiss and hug everyone goodbye family. I’m from a let yourself out and just shout ‘bye’ as you walk out family. I’ve upset the in laws many times when I’ve forgotten and just headed for the door without doing the grand goodbyes.

HeyThereDelila · 29/03/2026 20:44

My dear late DGM used to stand at her door and wave with both hands as we drove out of sight.

I miss the waving, and I miss her.

milkeyway · 29/03/2026 20:45

As kids my parents would wave and siblings and I would not only wave madly but run down the street in our socks racing the car until it was out of sight. If they were good guests they would wind down the windows and wave madly out until they turned the corner. The best guests also gave a little toot as they drove into the distance.

NamelessNancy · 29/03/2026 20:48

Am I the only one who is a variable waver? Someone is going to school or the shop? Don't be silly. Going away for a day or two? Quick wave out of the window. Leaving after a once in a year visit? Out on the drive waving until out of sight.

idontknowwhattodo2026 · 29/03/2026 20:49

I wave and blow kisses 😂

Catcatcatcatcat · 29/03/2026 20:49

I stand at the window and wave when visitors drive away…

Allseeingallknowing · 29/03/2026 20:50

i wave until the car goes out of sight.

Vicliz24 · 29/03/2026 20:50

We all wave . Our granny used to wave us out of sight , down a mile long flat road in Lincolnshire. With my aunt doing star jumps and waving beside her . Such happy memories. Said aunt always did star jumps even if she was waving you off on a train . Am now smiling mistily with nostalgia.
