Six year old trans girl ‘tries to cut off her penis’ after Guide ban

Quite a disturbing article in this morning’s Observer regarding the impact of the Guides’ ban on trans girls following the Supreme Court ruling.

It reports on the experience of one six year old trans girl named Emily after hearing she could no longer attend Rainbows:

Emily’s parents decided to be honest with their daughter about the situation, and explained that she was no longer able to take part in Rainbows because she was trans. A few hours later Curt said they found her “sobbing in her room” and were “shocked” to find her holding a pair of plastic scissors to her penis.

AIBU to find this a distressing consequence of campaign by anti-trans activists or is it a natural result of allowing such young children to change their gender identity?

If wanting a very distressed little boy to have some honesty from his parents and some therapy for his distress rather than the castration he has clearly been told he needs in order to be a girl makes us ‘anti trans’, then so be it.

It is more concerning that being pro trans means that we should agree that his distress with his penis is valid and he should continue on a pathway that ends in him having surgery and lifelong medical treatment.

We do understand the difference between people. Male and female people. You don't understand the difference between fact and delusion.

What do you define as transphobia?

Having worked in higher education and having encountered in my work a disproportionate number of trans women, my overriding and lasting impression is that none of them were truly happy and surgery brought with it further complications. But any grown up discussion is shut down with accusations of transphobia. In my role my, despite my personal view, I was nothing but supportive in picking up the pieces administratively (mainly mental health related) for this very vulnerable group of people who have just been sold a lie.

Transphobia is considered a hate crime in Scotland.

Please define transphobia. You seem able to spot it and want it criminalised as hate speech, so I think it would be helpful to have a definition.

Not going to Rainbows is the least of that little lad’s problems. I do hope he manages to get some help.

Humans can be same sex attracted but they can't change sex

Weird though right, every progressive I know isn’t worried about trans people. They don’t paint them as these evil cross dressers trying to “invade female spaces”.

you might not be one of those, but there is definitely a correlation between conservatism and transphobia.

Comparisons with gay rights are ridiculous.

Being gay is about accepting your sexuality for what it is. The 'trans' discourse is about encouraging people to believe they are something they are not.

Gay rights required nothing from anyone else but civility.

No going along with lies that men can 'really be women', no women having to give up single sex spaces and services. No children being put on life changing medical pathways because they are gender non conforming.

My definition would be abuse, disrespect or hatred directed at a trans person because of their gender identity.

That would include failure to uphold or recognise their chosen gender and pronouns.

No, you misunderstand. Boys are boys and girls are girls. Wear what you like, play with what you like, like who you like - those things are choices. But your sex is your sex.

And again - not gender, sex.

You always know the trans rights people because they can never say sex when they mean sex. They always say gender. They always conflate the two and get annoyed at any suggestion they actually talk about what they want. If you want mixed sex spaces stop talking about gender neutral or mixed gender. (Eg as girl guiding allows in trans boys or non-binary female children, they are already mixed gender).
