Quite a disturbing article in this morning’s Observer regarding the impact of the Guides’ ban on trans girls following the Supreme Court ruling.

It reports on the experience of one six year old trans girl named Emily after hearing she could no longer attend Rainbows:

Emily’s parents decided to be honest with their daughter about the situation, and explained that she was no longer able to take part in Rainbows because she was trans. A few hours later Curt said they found her “sobbing in her room” and were “shocked” to find her holding a pair of plastic scissors to her penis.

AIBU to find this a distressing consequence of campaign by anti-trans activists or is it a natural result of allowing such young children to change their gender identity?

I doubt this actually happened. I doubt this child even exists, to be honest.

Because I'm a pedant I will.say that it was Flavor Aid that was used to murder the people of Jonestown in 1978, incorrectly described as Kool-Aid in news reports.

The original Kool-Aid reference is to The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, a 1968 non-fiction book by Tom Wolfe describing the antics of a bunch of hippies who travelled round America on a bus, dropping acid. The phrase was used to "describe an unsuccessful attempt to stop someone with a poor mental health record from drinking Kool-Aid laced with LSD, who then subsequently had a bad psychedelic experience. The Atlantic hypothesized that this story, which caused "many Americans [to become] familiar with the idea of being urged to drink Kool-Aid containing. . .unusual chemicals", contributed to the misconception that Kool-Aid was used in Jonestown."

I've just read the blog post and it immediately reminded me of a church kids' group that I joined when I was around 8 or 9. I was very lonely as a girl and didn't have many friends and for some reason I joined a group at a local church. I was raised a strict Catholic and it would have been impossible for my parents to allow me to attend this other church.

And after a few weeks I was told that unless I attended that church, I could not go to that group. They were very sorry about it but those were the rules.

I was devastated. But I stopped going and I was very sad for a while. Because sometimes you have to be in the group to enjoy the group's things. And I wasn't in the group. But I got over it.

This little boy will also be fine if he is allowed to be a little boy. Sure, dress up in tutus, wear headbands, love pink, play with nail polish and make up. Nothing wrong with that. But it doesn't make him a girl.

I hadn’t thought of this point either. I’m guessing neither did Zoe or the parents as yet, but which is the logical outcome of telling your little boy there’s something wrong with his body.

It is heartbreaking to think that this boy is not being celebrated as a 6 year old who likes doing crafts but instead is being told he’s a girl because of regressive sexist thinking that says unicorns = girls, action man = boys.

Oh for goodness sake. Women saying no to men is not far right, anti-trans. Its a basic biological fact that no-one can change sex. “Woman” - as clarified by the Supreme Court means biological female. And always has. You can’t change sex. And my right as a woman is to have same sex services and spaces. Nowt far right about that.
