Six year old trans girl ‘tries to cut off her penis’ after Guide ban

Quite a disturbing article in this morning’s Observer regarding the impact of the Guides’ ban on trans girls following the Supreme Court ruling.

It reports on the experience of one six year old trans girl named Emily after hearing she could no longer attend Rainbows:

Emily’s parents decided to be honest with their daughter about the situation, and explained that she was no longer able to take part in Rainbows because she was trans. A few hours later Curt said they found her “sobbing in her room” and were “shocked” to find her holding a pair of plastic scissors to her penis.

AIBU to find this a distressing consequence of campaign by anti-trans activists or is it a natural result of allowing such young children to change their gender identity?

I doubt this actually happened. I doubt this child even exists, to be honest.

I am doing a strongwoman competition in a few weeks. The beginners female category the max deadlift is 120kg, the male beginners it’s 200kg. The same applies to every category.

Because like it or not those born male have strength advantages. It would be very unfair for a trans woman to compete against me because they have a natural advantage that no amount of training can overcome!

Good luck!

This is really sad to read

just how do we move forward supporting children who are feeling confused who do believe they are born in the wrong body

I feel both sides have become so entrenched in their views that we have lost the ability to have sensible conversations

Only one side uses facts.

Jones Town link
A total of 909 individuals died in Jonestown itself,[1] all but two from apparent cyanide poisoning, a significant number of whom were injected against their will. Jones and some Peoples Temple members referred to the act as a "revolutionary suicide"

Is revolutionary suicide the new phrase for murder? TRAs really like messing around with words don't they 🙄

There are all sorts of physical advantages that different people have in sport. Are we saying that tall girls should be banned from female teams because they are better than others.

I don’t see why a girl should be banned from playing a sport they love simply because they happen to have been assigned male at birth.

I really wish people would get over this ridiculous obfuscatory nonsense la-la land language. He wasn't "assigned" a boy any more than he was "assigned" a human being. He was, and still is, a boy. And if he wasn't a boy there would be no issue with him being in the Girl Guides.

There was an interesting letter to The Guardian a few months ago where a women described how she regularly uses male toilets as the queues are shorter. She has done this for decades without issue.

I think we all need to be more understanding and see each other as individuals rather than simply members of a specific identity group.

Thank you for replying, that’s appreciated. Although it doesn’t quite fully answer the question about whether there are any single sex spaces you’d see as having a reason to remain single sex. From this answer, should I infer that your view is ‘no, there are no spaces that need to remain single sex’?

Hence the saying about drinking the Kool Aid.

Because I'm a pedant I will.say that it was Flavor Aid that was used to murder the people of Jonestown in 1978, incorrectly described as Kool-Aid in news reports.

The original Kool-Aid reference is to The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, a 1968 non-fiction book by Tom Wolfe describing the antics of a bunch of hippies who travelled round America on a bus, dropping acid. The phrase was used to "describe an unsuccessful attempt to stop someone with a poor mental health record from drinking Kool-Aid laced with LSD, who then subsequently had a bad psychedelic experience. The Atlantic hypothesized that this story, which caused "many Americans [to become] familiar with the idea of being urged to drink Kool-Aid containing. . .unusual chemicals", contributed to the misconception that Kool-Aid was used in Jonestown."

TheKeatingFive · 29/03/2026 15:36

That story is an absolute disgrace

This is about a little girl who thought she had to change her body to keep her friends. Her actions weren’t driven by self-hatred, but by the heartbreaking belief that if she could remove the part of her body others said made her “wrong”, she might finally be accepted.

No way would this child have come to that conclusion if adults hadn't put it in his head.

I'm also aghast at how the last paragraph begins with 'What I want'.

This is all about the narcissism of the parents. Not a single thought or mention of the little girls who need to budge over and accommodate a boy. No actual regard for the child himself, he's being used for their agenda. Absolutely gross from start to finish.

I've just read the blog post and it immediately reminded me of a church kids' group that I joined when I was around 8 or 9. I was very lonely as a girl and didn't have many friends and for some reason I joined a group at a local church. I was raised a strict Catholic and it would have been impossible for my parents to allow me to attend this other church.

And after a few weeks I was told that unless I attended that church, I could not go to that group. They were very sorry about it but those were the rules.

I was devastated. But I stopped going and I was very sad for a while. Because sometimes you have to be in the group to enjoy the group's things. And I wasn't in the group. But I got over it.

This little boy will also be fine if he is allowed to be a little boy. Sure, dress up in tutus, wear headbands, love pink, play with nail polish and make up. Nothing wrong with that. But it doesn't make him a girl.

lcakethereforeIam · 29/03/2026 15:36

At the risk of repeating myself, why all the concern about this child getting his penis cut off. Do his parents, the Guardian, the OP not realise this is the reality of the road this child has been set on. He, unless he's exceptionally fortunate, will be castrated. Why is it such a tragedy now? It's his future.

I hadn’t thought of this point either. I’m guessing neither did Zoe or the parents as yet, but which is the logical outcome of telling your little boy there’s something wrong with his body.

It is heartbreaking to think that this boy is not being celebrated as a 6 year old who likes doing crafts but instead is being told he’s a girl because of regressive sexist thinking that says unicorns = girls, action man = boys.

Boiledbeetle · 29/03/2026 16:48

Zoe Williams has argued that a sensible solution to all of this would be to make the Brownies mixed gender like the Scouts.

Wouldn't this be more sensible than making six year old girls so distressed that they attempt to cut off their penis?

Girls don't have a penis.

Rightsraptor · 29/03/2026 16:53

'Emily's' parents should have been honest long before this. As in 'no, you're a boy. Nothing can change that' and then set about giving their son the best life he could have.

Yes, how about framing it like this, Zoe Williams and a section of the Girl Guides want boys to be put on a pathway that leads inevitably to castration.

Perhaps they could make it a badge!

Im pretty sure this is a wind up but if not
Why should the guiding movement change their rules on the whims of one child's parents because at six its the parents telling
the child hes a girl not the other way round?
The Scouting movement decided to include both Sexs the Guiding movement didnt which is ultimately their perogative.

With a six year old child I’m sure they’re just thinking of long curly hair, sparkly dresses and a stuffed unicorn in a bedroom painted in pink. Not about where this all eventually leads with a lifetime of medication and surgery.

So many complicit actors involved in this mess including the marketing industry that insists on separating the toy aisles into blue boys vs pink girls. Heaven forbid parents could buy just one box of Lego for all their children regardless of the child’s sex. Shameful exploitation.

This is a result of the anti-trans brigade asserting their bigotry in the guise of “helping children” and feminism. Citing regression as progress.

No mate, you’re not a feminist for jumping on the anti-trans bandwagon. You’re just a bog standard right winger asshole that lacks basic compassion and understanding of the differences between people.

The fact that right wing sentiments are skyrocketing in this time, reform are ahead in the polls, Rupert Lowe is able to peddle his racist shit with impunity. State of the world right now is sickening.

The girl clearly wants to identify as female, and I think it’s only right that we respect her wishes in how we refer to her.

It is not right. You are not doing this boy any favours at all.

A 6 Yr old boy should be playing in mud outside, climbing trees or making pictures with glitter, running about and thinking no further than can I eat a lolly and where is my Teddy.

Chatting about sex and sexuality is ridiculous with a 6 year old. They are hardly even conscious at that age.

You sound like a bot Or a bored person or someone just trying to keep conversation ticking over in mumsnet.

What absolute bullshit

What do you think is the benefit of lying to children about being 'born in the wrong body' and telling this little boy he can be a girl and can access facilities that are only for girls?

Wake up. Reality won't change because of your luxury beliefs.

Oh for goodness sake. Women saying no to men is not far right, anti-trans. Its a basic biological fact that no-one can change sex. “Woman” - as clarified by the Supreme Court means biological female. And always has. You can’t change sex. And my right as a woman is to have same sex services and spaces. Nowt far right about that.

The Green Party position is that trans women are women, and should have access to female spaces alongside non-binary people.

Until we reach a position where all facilities are multi-gender, the Greens’ position would avoid trans people being so distressed that a six year old girl tries to cut her penis off.

That's a couple of times you've mentioned the Green Party. Thanks for raising awareness that they have some absolutely batshit crazy ideas.

Many people still see them as the party to vote for if you're against global warming and loss of biodiversity. It's very important that we all know that they while they are pro environment, they are also anti women. Thank you

Personally I think transphobia should be properly treated as the hate speech it is, with investigations and criminal charges as appropriate.

That is the Green Party policy I believe.
