Quite a disturbing article in this morning’s Observer regarding the impact of the Guides’ ban on trans girls following the Supreme Court ruling.

It reports on the experience of one six year old trans girl named Emily after hearing she could no longer attend Rainbows:

Emily’s parents decided to be honest with their daughter about the situation, and explained that she was no longer able to take part in Rainbows because she was trans. A few hours later Curt said they found her “sobbing in her room” and were “shocked” to find her holding a pair of plastic scissors to her penis.

AIBU to find this a distressing consequence of campaign by anti-trans activists or is it a natural result of allowing such young children to change their gender identity?

Attempting to mutilate your own genitals as a child used to be considered to indicate undisclosed sexual abuse. Amazed that this seems to have been forgotten.

This sounds like a hundred other fictional "Trans" stories. I do not beleive it. If this story was true, I'd have huge sympathy for this child, for having such dysfunctional, self absorbed parents, who would inflict such misery their 6 year old son.

It's amazing how often the trope of ' trans child trying to cut off penis with scissors' It's apparently happened in childhood to so many adult trans identifed males over the years, many describe this exact incident and ideation, and now a new generation are doing the same, even though they are apparently affirmed in all other ways apart from girl guides. One little setback and it's out with the plastic handled scissors for snippy choppy time. Which is always prevented in time. And apparently the only answer ever considered or explored is unquestioning affirmation by others, no other psychological or psychiatric help is sought for worrying self harm ideation in a child.

It's surprising no other implements or means of harming are ever used or considered if damaging genitalia is the aim, and even more surprising that for an injury that apparently many trans identifying males have attempted, there is not a rash of these individuals as patients in the health care services. I assume you’re joking, because girls do not have a penis to cut off, even if they wanted to do such a thing. That’s 100% the point here.

At the risk of repeating myself, why all the concern about this child getting his penis cut off. Do his parents, the Guardian, the OP not realise this is the reality of the road this child has been set on. He, unless he's exceptionally fortunate, will be castrated. Why is it such a tragedy now? It's his future.

That story is an absolute disgrace

This is about a little girl who thought she had to change her body to keep her friends. Her actions weren’t driven by self-hatred, but by the heartbreaking belief that if she could remove the part of her body others said made her “wrong”, she might finally be accepted.

No way would this child have come to that conclusion if adults hadn't put it in his head.

I'm also aghast at how the last paragraph begins with 'What I want'.

This is all about the narcissism of the parents. Not a single thought or mention of the little girls who need to budge over and accommodate a boy. No actual regard for the child himself, he's being used for their agenda. Absolutely gross from start to finish.
