Six year old trans girl ‘tries to cut off her penis’ after Guide ban

Quite a disturbing article in this morning’s Observer regarding the impact of the Guides’ ban on trans girls following the Supreme Court ruling.

It reports on the experience of one six year old trans girl named Emily after hearing she could no longer attend Rainbows:

Emily’s parents decided to be honest with their daughter about the situation, and explained that she was no longer able to take part in Rainbows because she was trans. A few hours later Curt said they found her “sobbing in her room” and were “shocked” to find her holding a pair of plastic scissors to her penis.

AIBU to find this a distressing consequence of campaign by anti-trans activists or is it a natural result of allowing such young children to change their gender identity?

If true, it has arisen due to lies being told to the child by parents/carers. Squirrel Scouts are open to boys and girls, as are other organisations. And restricting the various sections of Girl Guides (etc) to girls is putting girls/females first, not anti-trans.

A six-year-old boy who has been consistently lied to and told he can be whatever he wants to be, gets so distressed when he comes into contact with material reality that he tries to harm himself… and this is the fault of sex realists? Nah.

And if the parents had not affirmed this boy's delusions then he wouldnt be in this psychological mess. Why would parents have sent him to single sex guides rather than mixed sex scouts? Where is the room for desistance? For the child to change his mind? There is no world in which these parents have not contributed to this child's delusions, and, given they chose to put him into a female only club when an equivalent mixed sex one is available, given they have done everything possible to entrench him in this harmful delusion that apparently makes him want to cut his penis off at 6-fucking-years-of-age then i fail to believe that the whole bloody delusion didnt originate with the parents.

I suppose it's a sign of just how insane things were that I'm actually preferring this OP, who wants to just outright ban any single sex spaces and label them all as unisex, to the usual barmy army that wants single sex spaces to remain as designated single sex spaces so that those of the opposite sex can use them.

At least this one admits they wouldn't be single sex.

Actually @JonesTown- if you are in good faith on this, what do you think about the parents signing their male child up for Rainbows after the Supreme Court judgement?

From where I’m sitting, that looks like they set their child up to fail /to upset and disappointed in order for the parents to make a political point.

What possible excuse could there be for this choice? It doesn’t really matter if you agree with the decision or not, the fact was it was clear that single sex meant single sex not single gender and as such, Girl Guiding would either have to go mixed sex (allowing in all boys regardless of gender identity) or single sex, banning trans girls.

Why would anyone who loves their child put them in a situation at such a young age where they could be disappointed like this? It’s really horrible when you stop to think about it.

This is what I don't like about the whole trans thing. They enter a female only organisation / space, and division and disagreement and sometimes collapse, ensues.

Makes me wonder if that was the objective all along.

Poor little lad. Making it clear cut now will hopefully stop and more children being lied to in this way.

We had a family friend growing up who at the age of 5 (until about 10) was adamant he was a girl. He only played with “girly” toys and loved playing dress up and with his mums make up.

His parents allowed him to play with what he wanted of course but the didn’t let him believe he was a girl. He was a boy. By the age of 15 he was a happy young man.

parents are the issue in cases like the boy in the article. They need to realise that a boy wanting to play with a doll doesn’t mean they are a girl!

Deeply troubled 6 year olds with obvious mental health issues need appropriate care and parenting and that doesn't include affirming their gender confusion. Not at that age. FFS

That child (if this really happened as reported) has been let down by so many people and agencies. Assuming this is true, in any part, I'm furious that his story is all over the press. What a shitty thing to allow to happen to your child.

Oh yeah, really. This is a fabricated story. A child of six years old who was trying to cut his penis off has serious mental health issues. A six year old cannot reason with, complex logic, long term consequences, abstract concepts, or high emotion scenarios. Their brains are still developing, and are unable to manage frustration.

I've just given my completely not fictitious cat his dinner (actually her, I've had him neutered). He was already pissed off because I'm an hour late (BST damn you! Shakes fist). He turned his nose up at the flaked salmon, walked over to the fridge and demanded broccoli! Then tried to hang himself on the cat tree. True story.

But then it would just be the same. You might as well merge them if they are both mixed sex as they are so similar (as a Guide Leader myself I think a space for single sex is really important regardless of your views about whether a trans girl is a girl or a boy)

And likewise girls who don’t play with dolls are still girls. We seem to have gone back in time with “gendered” clothing and toys.

How exactly have these parents broken the news to the child for a 6 year old to be making the connection that his penis was the “problem?” @strangerthings2475 you’re right too. I am getting a vibe from this story that there could well be more serious issues at play in that child’s life.

I’ve seen others post vegan cat and I have to say I think this case would be a prime example to suspect that is exactly what is happening here.

The problems started when they let their little boy think he could be a girl just because he wanted to.

why not explain that he's a boy, but if he wants to dress feminine he can? That he can wear girls clothes if he wants but he's still a boy?

The boy is 6 years old! My daughter tells me she is a horse and runs around the garden shouting 'neigh'- iv not moved to a farm to accommodate and started feeding her hay.

I wouldn't tell my child the real reason. I'd say it happens on a different night and we can't do it anymore, just as I would with a club I couldn't afford anymore rather than cause a child anxiety around money. There's no reason for this child, regardless of gender, to have to bear the burden of grown up politics.

What would be sensible is parents being the fucking grown up and not filling small children's heads with such shite.

It's been said already but a 6 year old should not have his stuff in their mind - my sister thought she was a bloody horse at 6, why is any of this being pandered to?

Surely you can see how seriously disturbed this child’s upbringing has been? But, yes, let’s blame the women who are protecting the need for female only spaces for the actions of a very unwell child and abusive patenting.

I’m interested to hear your thoughts on if you really mean all spaces being made mixed gender. Are you including prisons? Domestic refuges? Rape relief counselling sessions? Rape testing? Hospital wards?

Are there really no female spaces that you could think are and ought to remain single sex for good reason?

And if someone like the trans woman convicted double rapist Isla Bryson is legally accepted as a woman, he ought to then get access to all female spaces?
