Six year old trans girl ‘tries to cut off her penis’ after Guide ban

Quite a disturbing article in this morning’s Observer regarding the impact of the Guides’ ban on trans girls following the Supreme Court ruling.

It reports on the experience of one six year old trans girl named Emily after hearing she could no longer attend Rainbows:

Emily’s parents decided to be honest with their daughter about the situation, and explained that she was no longer able to take part in Rainbows because she was trans. A few hours later Curt said they found her “sobbing in her room” and were “shocked” to find her holding a pair of plastic scissors to her penis.

AIBU to find this a distressing consequence of campaign by anti-trans activists or is it a natural result of allowing such young children to change their gender identity?

No matter how tragic things are for one male, it doesn't mean women and girls should have to give up their rights, spaces, or identity.

(Or lie about reality - which is where things have gone wrong for this little boy.)

So many seem to think a male trumps all female needs.

This.

When DD was 12 she played a football match against a team with two trans-girls. She was hurt when one tackled her (she was under 5 ft and slight and “she” nearly a foot taller). Less so, but her team were also despondent as the two trans-girls kept scoring as they were faster and stronger.

I often thought how the parents felt of the trans girls on their team. They won the league but the other girls didn’t really get a look in … also they shared changing rooms.

The girl clearly wants to identify as female, and I think it’s only right that we respect her wishes in how we refer to her.

No because it's a boy. And why should a child that age even know being trans exists?!

If they are taught about it that young (which seems unnecessary) it should be framed as something some adults do. And that they are still the sex they were born with.

Should we move towards a situation like the Greens and Zack Polanski are advocating where trans women are legally recognised as women, and have access to all ‘female’ spaces?

Alternatively, all spaces could simply be made mixed gender.

This would blunt the impact of transphobia.

But it would reduce women's and girls' freedom and safety. Why have you decided that doesn't matter?

Snowingwinter · 29/03/2026 12:25

Scouts became mixed sex because of falling numbers and would have closed.

Yes. And Guiding continued to be viable as a single sex organisation because there was enough demand for it.

OK, well submit your complaint to IPSO and see what they say 🤷‍♀️

The Guardian isn't a member of IPSO, and since the separated I don't think the Observer had signed up to it.

You can't report a paper to an organisation they haven't signed up to. So it's not the gotcha you think it is.

It would be like referring a teacher to the OFCOM, not OFSTED.

I am quite happy to say that even if this little boy managed to cut off his penis with a pair of plastic scissors he would still be a little boy. It is a long time since I studied biology but I think chromosomes have something to do with gender....
He needs help with his mental health not convincing he is a little girl by taking him to brownies.

Chromosomes have nothing to do with gender.
They have everything to do with sex.

I totally can see this and I do think it's hard to parents to navigate. But in this instance there was no reason for the parents to tell the child they were removed from a group due to being trans. That was unnecessarily cruel on the parents part and they really should have foreseen the impact on the child of giving too much upsetting information too early.

He wasn't removed from the group for being trans, he was removed from the group for being male - and yes his parents had every responsibility for being really clear from the get go that this was the case, because whatever his future holds, however he presents himself and his body to the world, that will never change.

TMFF · 29/03/2026 12:27

This poor boy is going to grow up and realise his parents were so desperate for a girl, they tried to persuade him he is one.

And then splashed it across the media.

Zoe Williams has argued that a sensible solution to all of this would be to make the Brownies mixed gender like the Scouts.

Wouldn't this be more sensible than making six year old girls so distressed that they attempt to cut off their penis?

Girl Guiding use an exemption for Associations with a membership over 25 members to restrict membership to a single sex, as detailed in the EQA2010. This forms the basis of their membership, Charitable aims etc. They don't have to be single sex, they could go through the process of changing the organisation to a mixed sex one but they don't want to lose their USP. And as mentioned by pp's, there's already the Scouts. Where there is already boys and girls.

The SC clarified that, despite intense lobbying by activists, single sex means single sex. And this isn't new, the EQA2010 has been in place since, well, 2010.

If a boy of 6 is so distressed by his body that he attempts to remove his punishment, then he needs intensive mental help support and therapy. Not to be lied to by his parents and other adults that he is not a boy and should be allowed to invade women and girls single sex spaces and services.

(And I wouldn't be describing any suggestion made by Zoe as 'sensible'. And it's mixed sex, not mixed gender).

Solutionssought2026 · 29/03/2026 12:28

I’ve only got one little boy but age 6 he would definitely not have wanted to cut off his penis. He was far too busy enjoying it.
This is very very bizarre

It was a six year old boy.

No girl has a penis. This little boy who doesn’t exist would need help if parents were so abusive as to tell about he can be one a girl.

TriesNotToBeCynical · 29/03/2026 12:28

JonesTown · 29/03/2026 12:18

The article is simply using the pronouns and identity that the girl and her parents wish to identify with.

"Simply" is doing a lot of work there. Would they feel forced to go along with the plan if the child wanted to identify as a centipede? Would they be offered multiple leg transplants?

lol - nice try at getting men to access women in vulnerable places. What could possibly go wrong ?

Of all the things that never happened, this didn't happen the most.

100%

and if it did this boy has the worst parents ever

PistachioTiramisu · 29/03/2026 12:29

Why do you keep referring to this child as a 'girl', OP? HE is a BOY!

CornishDaughteroftheDawn · 29/03/2026 12:29

JonesTown · 29/03/2026 11:38

The article is clear that it’s the girl’s friends themselves who have left in solidarity.

The article also uses ‘she’ to refer to a boy several times and includes the oxymoron ‘her penis’ so I think we can take these reports of ‘leaving in solidarity’ with a pinch of salt. Girls of that age don’t think like that.

Either they have activist parents who have cruelly taken them out of Rainbows in protest or they are a further figment of the ‘writers’ imagination.

ChaToilLeam · 29/03/2026 12:30

That poor child, lied to by parents and others who should damn well know better. Trendy rainbow parenting, trying to be "inclusive" and in the process really messing up this little boy.

If the child has a penis then he's a boy and that's that. No amount of glitter washing and stupid tiptoeing around pronouns changes biological reality.

Girls/women only spaces are important and it’s right they are being protected.

ProfessorSlocombe · 29/03/2026 12:30

The whole story also has the same vibes about the couple who couldn't afford KitKat even though they earned £345,000 a year

Even if it didn't happen (it definitely didn't), he still has the worst parents for going to the newspaper with a pack of lies about him.

Just to push their own agenda.

The girl clearly wants to identify as female, and I think it’s only right that we respect her wishes in how we refer to her.

Why? The child is male, a boy. He is not and never can be a girl, because a girl is a female child.

Why should society encourage this delusion, rather than trying to fix the inequality that drives the desire (in children) to be the opposite sex?

ZeldaFighter · 29/03/2026 12:31

I heard of a child at primary school who talked about killing himself. I believe he was taken out of class, parents called and and the senior teachers told the parents to take the kid to A&E for emergency mental health support.

I wonder what support this family will be offered.

ChickenBananaBanana · 29/03/2026 12:31

JonesTown · 29/03/2026 11:32

The article is clear that this girl’s friends are all now boycotting Rainbows due to how she has been treated.

Vegan cat.

No, if this is actually happening, then a horde of six year old girls are not boycotting Rainbows, their parents are, while using their children for a political protest. And teaching their daughters that their resources and boundaries are limited to what men and boys permit them to have.

There are mixed sex provisions available, where the child's gender distress is never going to be an issue. There is no reason to deprive all girls of one single sex option that is inclusive of all girls. Boys do not need to have every single inch of the universe.

And yes, this is a very small, sweet, sad story doing the work for men with gender identities who want to go on being volunteers in women's roles while having pictures on their social media of them posing with guns in uniform, and of themselves BDSM basques and riding crops. And to go on ignoring girls' safeguarding because it's inconvenient to the wishes of boys.
