Six year old trans girl ‘tries to cut off her penis’ after Guide ban

Quite a disturbing article in this morning’s Observer regarding the impact of the Guides’ ban on trans girls following the Supreme Court ruling.

It reports on the experience of one six year old trans girl named Emily after hearing she could no longer attend Rainbows:

Emily’s parents decided to be honest with their daughter about the situation, and explained that she was no longer able to take part in Rainbows because she was trans. A few hours later Curt said they found her “sobbing in her room” and were “shocked” to find her holding a pair of plastic scissors to her penis.

AIBU to find this a distressing consequence of campaign by anti-trans activists or is it a natural result of allowing such young children to change their gender identity?

To those questioning how a 6 year old is aware of such stuff - it does happen. My nephew in law knew he was trans without knowing what it was, had no name for it and it was before smartphones, tablets and social media - he told his mum aged 3 he was a boy, wanted to wear boys clothes, hated dresses and female school uniform and most of all his name, very feminine name. This is 10+ years before any of the current trend started. He went by a different name by early teens and wore boys school uniform, camhs counselling from 16 then properly transitioned at 18. Happily through all surgeries and in long term relationship. I think being truly trans at a young age is rare but having seen it with my own eyes I know it was not encouraged at all yet still…

I totally can see this and I do think it's hard to parents to navigate. But in this instance there was no reason for the parents to tell the child they were removed from a group due to being trans. That was unnecessarily cruel on the parents part and they really should have foreseen the impact on the child of giving too much upsetting information too early.

I’m not implying anything. I’m flat out calling them god damn liars.

OK, well submit your complaint to IPSO and see what they say 🤷‍♀️

The article is simply using the pronouns and identity that the girl and her parents wish to identify with.

What girl?

Zoe Williams has argued that a sensible solution to all of this would be to make the Brownies mixed gender like the Scouts.

Wouldn't this be more sensible than making six year old girls so distressed that they attempt to cut off their penis?

No six year old girl has a penis.

Girl Guiding was for girls. Making it mixed sex wouldn’t make it better for girls.

Making anything generally worse for girls in order not to upset disturbed males is the problem. Sort out the disturbed males another way and leave girls alone.

Poor little boy. He's a victim of terrible, abusive parenting.

This.
They should never have told him he could be a girl in the first place. If he liked dresses then fine, buy him dresses. If he liked going on camps and doing outdoor stuff, then join Beavers. But there was no need to tell him he could be a girl and joins a club for girls. This is 100% on the parents. Hopefully they’ll get some parenting support and do a better job of the next stage of his life.

MagpiePi · 29/03/2026 12:20

If this did actually happen, it’s interesting that the parents sound like the sort that would happily endorse cross-sex hormones and surgery for their child but won’t risk him using metal scissors.

No matter how tragic things are for one male, it doesn't mean women and girls should have to give up their rights, spaces, or identity.

(Or lie about reality - which is where things have gone wrong for this little boy.)

So many seem to think a male trumps all female needs.

FlicaBonnyLittleStar · 29/03/2026 12:21

Unbelievable

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 29/03/2026 12:21

@JonesTown- I think you’ve made the same mistake that lead to Girl Guides initially allowing this male child into their Rainbows to start with - you describe Zoe Williams’ suggested change to girl guiding to be “mixed gender” - but it already is and will be after the change in September. You can be any gender, but you must be female (and the right age) to go to Rainbows, Brownies and Guides.

What Zoe Williams was arguing for was for Girl Guiding to be mixed sex.

This trans girl should have been always told they are male, and some things and spaces are for everyone and some things and spaces are for people who are female and some things and spaces are for people who are male.

The 6 year olds parents should have signed them up for Beavers - the youngest you can be to join Rainbows is 4, for the last 2 years it has been clear the tide had turned on the trans debate and self ID wouldn’t be allowed for much longer. These are terrible parents who set their child up to fail. That they ran to the press about their parenting failure and how they put their child in a terrible position, reinforces the fact they aren’t good parents.

I hope this whole family is getting some help.

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 29/03/2026 12:21

Setting aside the many, many other issues with this, why is a distressed boy a valid reason to remove single sex provision from all girls? Why is his happiness and needs so much more important than theirs? It's making pretty clear that everyone knows there's binary sex involved and that the power and importance is with one sex and not the other. And the issues of the girls' safeguarding and the many, many other things so much worse than 'it's made a small boy unhappy'- where's the mention of that in balance?

I wonder what girls would need to do to be taken equally seriously?

The13thFairy · 29/03/2026 12:22

It's not because the child is 'trans', it's because the child is a boy. His parents have lied to him, waved goodbye to reality.

Or it didn't happen - which gets my vote.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 29/03/2026 12:22

JonesTown · 29/03/2026 11:38

The article is clear that it’s the girl’s friends themselves who have left in solidarity.

Do you uncritically believe everything you read? Do you know any six year olds? This decision is entirely down to the parents of the children. The parents who are mostly interested in virtue signalling to their friends that they are not 'transphobic'.

Xanadu78 · 29/03/2026 12:22

I do strongly believe that this story has been fabricated as the child "started Rainbows" a week before the ruling came into place.

The article is simply using the pronouns and identity that the girl and her parents wish to identify with.

But which bears no relationship whatsoever to reality, as demonstrated by references to a ‘her penis’.

Elizabethandfour · 29/03/2026 12:23

I really hope SS look into this little boy’s family life. So many red flags if true.

Having seen a very young child being adamant they are the opposite sex I sympathise fully with this family. They have a terrible situation to deal with every single day and it doesn't help at all having judgemental ignoramuses suggesting they are bad parents. The majority of the world is already against them, why make it harder by levelling uneducated criticism at them when they are trying to do their best for their child?

The child I knew was stating they were the opposite sex from as soon as they were able to speak. They are now late teens and it's quite clear it wasn't a fad or a protest of some sort. They have had a terrible time through no fault of their own. Their parents and wider family have been extremely strong and faced the opposition, the backlash and immense pressure from every quarter with dignity and love for their child.

Some children might be very persistent in their self perception. That still doesn’t make it reality though. Or helpful for adults to affirm.

I hope the child you know has parents strong enough to resist the push to medicalise him or her and remove all possibility of resolving those feelings as he or she matures fully.

I also hope they have instigated investigations into possible autism and endured that there is no history of abuse or trauma that has triggered these feelings, as the majority of kids have one or more of these factors in play.

Jeremy Vine for me.

teawamutu · 29/03/2026 12:23

The story is mawkish bullshit. Suggesting Zoe Williams makes sensible suggestions about anything is also bullshit.

Emotive crap doesn't make lies true, and if this little boy exists, which I very much doubt, the fault lies with the foolish adults around him who propped up a fantasy and encouraged him to think that anyone who won't play along hates him and wants him dead. These contemptible wankers make me SO angry. Warping a child for ideological brownie points.

OP I share your apparent concern about inaccuracy in reporting of the news. I encourage you and other posters to read the following

If enough of us complain perhaps something will be done. If none of us complain nothing will change.

Frankly I have my doubts about the entire article, but here we are.

Girls should be banned from scouts. When I was a kid boys went to scouts and girls went to guides.

Scouts became mixed sex because of falling numbers and would have closed.
