AIBU to be stressed and annoyed if DH took my house keys?

I just need to vent. Think DH has accidentally taken my house keys to work so I’m stuck at home, nice plans for the day are kaput. I know he’s generally busy and on his feet so I sent him a message and called his work phone during lunch but no answer. Just feeling unable to enjoy the day and stressed, wondering if he has them which I think is most likely, or I lost them somewhere else which is obviously a big problem.

I would have just carried on with my day and left the door on the latch …yes I know!

My anxiety could never. I’d think about it the whole time I was out!

My DH has skipped off to work twice with my car keys. We have spare house keys so that’s not an issue but couldn’t find the spare car key anywhere and had to take the kids to school on a taxi 😡

I didn’t bite your head off at all. You were telling me in no uncertain terms that my view was wrong and you doubled down as such when I dared to push back and support my original view, rather than acquiescing to yours.

I hadn’t even spoken to you, it was you who leapt on me! Yet now you’re accusing me of biting your head off and claiming you “don’t really care”? Not sure why you commented in the first place then?

That’s a completely disproportionate reaction to her comments. You’re being really mean and it’s not clear why.

It felt disproportionate to me to be told my views were wrong and hers were right. She’s entitled to her views but I’m entitled to mine. Perhaps her posts weren’t meant that way but it’s certainly how it came across. I didn’t initiate a conversation with her, she just seems determined to tell me my views are wrong because she said so. It’s not mean to stand by my original comment! But telling me she “explained” to me feels pretty pushy and unnecessary.

That’s not what she was doing. I think you should read the exchange again.

I actually have. Many times. Perhaps you missed the first part? I’m not sure. All I did was confirm I wasn’t changing my view to hers and why. In the same way she explained what her view as, I explained mine. Nothing in what I said was about her, it was about the original situation. Then she started accusing me of “telling her off” and “biting her head off” for not changing my mind.

Okay, then.

We've got one key for 5 of us which never leaves the back of the door

What do you do if the last person in the house wants to go out? The other four can’t get back in until that person is home

One min you’re saying you agreeing with me that it doesn’t sound right, now you’re changing view point.

Sounds legit 👀

Well, I suppose if you don't have the capacity to understand how he can have taken both sets of keys “by accident”? then you are going to struggle to understand what has happened in my posts, yes.

Flamingojune · 24/03/2026 08:13

Dont any neighbours have spares?

Apologies master, I wasn’t following your posts in particular so I wasn’t aware you were just taking the piss out of people. I only saw two of your posts, which were replies to me. Hopefully this explains any confusion.

CinnamonBuns67 · 24/03/2026 10:48

I did this to my partner once, I went on a night out, had my keys in my bag already but didn't realise and picked his up too, didn't realise I had both sets until I got into the pub. Thankfully it was realised almost immediately and I was able to get hold of him to come get them. We got extra spares now and very different keyrings. Yanbu as it is definitely very annoying that you had plans that you've now had to cancel due to his mistake.

Historian0111101000 · 24/03/2026 11:39

Jesus, this thread… People are trying to over-analyse why he took the key. Like you’ve never been in a rush or not paid attention ever in your life?

Also, why don’t people have spare keys hidden somewhere?
Blaming your husband and asking him to leave work just because you want to get out is ridiculous.

MaddestGranny · 24/03/2026 18:34

I live alone now, but when DH was alive he trained me (not an easy thing to do) always to hang my keys on a key-hook in our kitchen, because I was forever mislaying my keys. He would NEVER have taken my keys (for pernickety reasons of his own, which I won't bore you with).
Even so, I still managed to waste much time - usually when a bit late leaving - looking for keys I'd "just this minute put down somewhere".

No more! I now have my keys on a long, slim keychain which is clipped inside my handbag with a clip I have learned is called a "lobster claw clip". I have sewn these clips inside any handbag I'm likely to use. Changing over from bag to bag takes seconds. I can't tell you how much time this has saved me. Probably the best time-saver is when, coming up to my door, I just pull on the chain and my keys appear. No more frantic delving inside my (many pocketed) handbag, knowing they're in there & not being able to find them. Especially good at night when you can't see inside your bag. I've also got a max-security key-safe screwed into the brickwork next to my front door, hidden behind ivy. Just in case.

anyway, OP: if you adopt this practice your DH will be hyper-dissuaded from 'borrowing' your keys because he's too lazy/in a hurry to look for his own.

Wolffie17 · 24/03/2026 18:38

@MasterBeth you are playing a risky game using sarcasm on this thread! Actually can’t believe how funny it is 🤣

TheDenimPoet · 24/03/2026 19:18

Everyone does things by mistake, it's just unlucky. It's shit for you but he didn't (I assume) do it maliciously.

The only thing I've have worried about is how I'd get out of the house in case of emergency. For this reason you should ALWAYS have a spare, which I'm sure you know now. Ideally you should also have a spare spare. I'd have one in a drawer downstairs, and one upstairs, in case you use your spare and then accidentally leave it in a bag or something instead of putting it back in the spare place.

So where were the keys???

This thread has made my day 😀

Get spares cut
Get a key safe for outside
You should have more than one set each

I would not get a key safe. They have lost their reputation as being secure.

I live on a low rise bock of 17 flats. And about five elderly residents , including myself had a problem around six months ago when someone tried to break into all of the key safes.

We all had them taken off the outside wall near our front doors.

MrsMitford3 · 24/03/2026 21:26

We have a key safe-it is not in plain sight and has been a lifesaver many a time.

DH didn’t have the keys.
DH found them in the laundry basket where DC had hidden them. 🤯

How old are the children? Were they punished for taking something that didn’t belong to them?

I must confess that I don’t even know what this means.

My house has an attached garage that I can enter by typing a code into a keypad. I can also open it with the remote in my car. It might be less common in the UK, but I would consider those keyless entry.

Bobloblawww · 25/03/2026 04:16

YABU for not having spares.

Usernamenotav · 25/03/2026 10:00

Of course you can go out. The chances of getting burgled are slim to none. Also, I assumed if he has taken them it's completely by accident, so yes, unreasonable.
