AIBU to be stressed and annoyed if DH took my house keys?

I just need to vent. Think DH has accidentally taken my house keys to work so I’m stuck at home, nice plans for the day are kaput. I know he’s generally busy and on his feet so I sent him a message and called his work phone during lunch but no answer. Just feeling unable to enjoy the day and stressed, wondering if he has them which I think is most likely, or I lost them somewhere else which is obviously a big problem.

That’s nothing I took the tv remote to work once, and left my phone at home.

CoffeeIsMyLove · 23/03/2026 16:47

My husband did this. Took my car keys to work when he used my car, but also took his own car keys and both of those had our house keys. I had to ask my mother in law to borrow back our back door key for the day 🤦🏼‍♂️

SunnyRedSnail · 23/03/2026 16:49

@Mum18283 ohps, it's easily done.

But... every household should have an emergency key for scenarios like this! You need to make sure you get a spare house key cut ASAP.

Hoppinggreen · 23/03/2026 16:50

DH took my house and car keys to London and I had to climb out of a window and walk to an Ante Natal appointment
Unsurprisingly my BP was a little high when I arrived

technology has safely evolved beyond a key.
Google keyless front door locks and no it’s not magic or Santa.

Unless you live in a flat, can you go out back door? we never take back door keys out?

You actually think every other property bar a flat must have a back door?

diddl · 23/03/2026 16:55

We all chuck our keys in a bowl in the hall.

Easily differentiated between & no one would take someone else's.

I have spent time hunting for my keys which I had already put in my pocket though!

i don't understand this, do you not at the very least have ONE keyless entry point to the home?

I must confess that I don’t even know what this means.

Pistachiocake · 23/03/2026 16:57

When I was on mat leave, my husband would sometimes pick up my keys (bunch with house/car together) if he was moving my car.
But like you, it meant he left with my housekeys a couple of time! It was really annoying.
In the end I just made a couple more spares. Sure, we could have reminded each other, but we were both knackered and it only cost a couple of quid and was well worth it.

You were writing about them like it was a super commonplace thing that EVERYONE has and you were confused and surprised that the OP did not. They’re nowhere near common enough for that sort of reaction, surely?

Pixiedust1234 · 23/03/2026 17:01

I have something attached to my keys that XH hated so he never accidentally took mine. It's just something that one DC made at nursery many years ago and I like it. I also have two sets of spare keys incase I have to give one set to neighbour, friend or builder.

I've been locked out of my house only twice in my life. Once because of XH and once because of toddler. Never again.

Good call getting an airtag OP

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 23/03/2026 17:03

I think the weirdest thing about this is that you only have 2 house keys.

YANBU. My DH is like this too and it’s fucking infuriating. An adult man should be able to look after his own stuff and not take someone else’s keys because he can’t be bothered keeping track of his own.

DH once did this to me when the only working garage door buzzer was on my keyring. Why did he do this? He is a lazy unorganised sod who can’t be arsed keeping track of his own stuff. Come school run time, I found myself with a car I could not get out of the garage, having to ring DD’s primary school to apologise because I could not get there in time.

Why was there only one working buzzer, you ask? Because DH had l put his somewhere and couldn’t find it, the spare one had broken, and he had also failed to let me know this so that I could make sure we ordered a new one. I hadn’t realised until the crucial moment that he had the only working buzzer with him 100 miles away.

I have contemplated divorce over stuff like this many a time 😬

The OPs DH took them by accident, not through laziness!

They are super common where I live, can't imagine anyone with kids/teens or a busy lifestyle relying on stupid keys. They've been around since the late 70's.
Honestly all this BS about needing a key to leave or enter the house is so controlling and limiting who in their right mind would choose to live like this?

What happens if the internet goes down or there’s an electricity outage? Is there a non-technology way to use the lock?

No need to be snide. It was a genuine question

It’s not deliberate - they do look similar by colour but if you look it’s obvious who’s is who’s.

I’ve spent the day when not stressing and looking, shopping for an AirTag and holder so I can locate them next time. Might get a big fluorescent pink keychain too. 🙄

It'd be cheaper to buy a key safe and locate it somewhere inconspicuous.

Also spelt an air tag wouldn't help that much of he'd taken them. You still wouldn't be able to go out.

Key safes are about £20.

Also GETTING an air tag, rather. Autocorrect

Tacohill · 23/03/2026 18:22

Definitely get a spare cut and leave it in a drawer.

You might not have your car keys but at least you’ll be able to leave the house if needed.

Sunsetseascape · 23/03/2026 18:27

Sidebeforeself · 23/03/2026 15:34

Well Ive just explained it. He didnt realise he has a set of keys on him already, sees a set that looks similar so thinks they are his , picks them up and dashes out the door.

I did this with my husbands reading glasses at the weekend.

Husband doing it on purpose? THAT doesnt sit right!

You gave your interpretation, you didn’t “explain” anything. It’s thoughtless at best to see one set of keys where there should be two and take them anyway without taking the three extra seconds to check if they’re actually yours or not. I’ve never done this, or had it done to me.

Whowhenwhat · 23/03/2026 18:27

Has he not returned your calls or messages and is this normal for him to out of contact like this? YANBU to be stressed and annoyed.

BreakingBroken · 23/03/2026 18:55

@FeralWoman they are 9V battery back up, and can be used with a key.
