AIBU to be stressed and annoyed if DH took my house keys?

I just need to vent. Think DH has accidentally taken my house keys to work so I’m stuck at home, nice plans for the day are kaput. I know he’s generally busy and on his feet so I sent him a message and called his work phone during lunch but no answer. Just feeling unable to enjoy the day and stressed, wondering if he has them which I think is most likely, or I lost them somewhere else which is obviously a big problem.

Yeah I’ve done this. Left my house keys at work/in car and then taken the set in the door.

it really pissed my husband off but it wasn’t on purpose.

we got spares cut - not normally too expensive - and bought key rings with little stuffed animals on them so it was very clear whose was whose.

RoseWineLover · 23/03/2026 16:18

As others have said you need more than one set each. Spare keys are such a good idea!!

Bellaboo01 · 23/03/2026 16:19

I havent read all the messages but, tbh - this wouldn't stress me out.

Do you have more than one door/window whereby you could leave the house if you really needed to? If you have, this is what i would do.

BreakingBroken · 23/03/2026 16:20

i don't understand this, do you not at the very least have ONE keyless entry point to the home?

luckylavender · 23/03/2026 16:20

Sidebeforeself · 23/03/2026 15:48

Oh now I’ve read it all!!! He’s an adult, her husband not a toddler

Yes of course but it is an easy thing to do. I have done it myself

Miranda65 · 23/03/2026 16:22

Little tip for the future.... I always keep my house keys and car key in my handbag - my husband knows where they are, but there's no danger of him taking them "accidentally".

Jan24680 · 23/03/2026 16:22

My dad used to guard his door key. One day my mum couldn't find hers and insisted it was not in her handbag. This had somehow become my problem. I tipped the whole bag upside down and found the other 3 set of keys, hers, mine and my brothers

We don't, and I don't think I know anyone who does..... sounds a bit risky!

Dooodaaaaaday · 23/03/2026 16:23

I would have just carried on with my day and left the door on the latch …yes I know!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 23/03/2026 16:24

Get different key colours and get a third and fourth set cut.

Iloveeverycat · 23/03/2026 16:26

I always keep my front door key in my purse in my handbag. I never go out without it. We also have a key safe just incase anyone loses theirs.

LunchtimeIllusion · 23/03/2026 16:26

These things happen, just get some spares cut.

I couldn’t find my car keys one morning. Luckily we have a campervan, so I bundled the kids in there to get to school. Once I’d got to work I messaged DH to see if he had them. He nearly had a heart attack! He’d completely forgotten the camper existed so had legged it out of work to his car before ringing me to say he was on his way. Oh how I laughed!

And another one.

How is it hard to conceive of this?

I have a front door and a back door. Both need to be locked from the outside. I suppose I could jump out of an open window...

He has taken both sets?

Again. How can this possibly be?

MasterBeth · 23/03/2026 16:29

Sunsetseascape · 23/03/2026 14:48

I don’t know he can have taken both sets of keys “by accident”?

Yes, it feels impossible, doesn't it?

MasterBeth · 23/03/2026 16:30

YourShyLion · 23/03/2026 15:08

Not sure what the big deal is tbh. We never lock our door and haven't done for goodness knows how many years. I don't know why you can't just go about your day as normal.

Yes, can't imagine why you wouldn't leave your front door unlocked.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 23/03/2026 16:30

My dh takes my phone practically once every week as it's identical to his. I think he just wants to go through it 😂.
The key thing would drive me mad, though.

Starlight1979 · 23/03/2026 14:59

This makes no sense.

In an earlier post you said

It’s not deliberate - they do look similar by colour but if you look it’s obvious who’s is who’s.

Which would mean that he has picked up the wrong set. But now you're saying he has taken both his set of keys AND yours?

It makes no sense? How can it be?

What’s a keyless entry point?

MasterBeth · 23/03/2026 16:34

This thread is key-razy!

What’s a keyless entry point?

It's like when Santa comes down the chimney.

JetFlight · 23/03/2026 16:42

Yeah get two spares cut. Don’t tell him about them and definitely buy yourself a nice bright key ring.

I've managed it before. Picked up DPs keys by accident, not realising mine were already in my rucksack. Not realised until I've gone to get my lunch out of my bag.

Surely it's an easy mistake to make though, especially if not looking closely and keys are similar.
One set is already in his pocket (his own) perhaps left there from the weekend. He is off out to work and spots a set of keys on the table. Being in a hurry he doesn't think my keys are still in my pocket from walking the dog yesterday, but oh there's my keys and grabs them and throws them into the car glove box (that's where I keep mine) on the way to work.
