To cringe when middle class women swear

On Mumsnet at least they use embarrassing words like 'cockwomble' and think it's edgy. Only working and upper class people sound right swearing.

Where do you stand on middle class men swearing?

Eskarina1 · 21/03/2026 13:27

dopaminego · 21/03/2026 12:34

Well no. If it is it isn't very clever.

I think there's a substantial amount of evidence that swearing is linked to intelligence. As in, more intelligent people tend to swear more (not at people, as an additional adjective).

I do agree though it's not an activity for the stereotypical middle class. They cared a lot what total strangers thought of them. I think we need new definitions or, better yet, none.

Squirrelsnut · 21/03/2026 13:28

Oh shit off.

Depends whether it’s done with conviction or not.
Nothing worse than a fine four-letter word limply delivered.

On their hands.

BillieWiper · 21/03/2026 13:31

How do you know what class someone is by them posting anonymously on online forums?
Nobody ever thought saying 'cockwomble' was edgy did they? It's just supposed to be mildly amusing.

But I strongly suspect this isn't posted in good faith and sounds just like you are trying to get attention.

Mimicking · 21/03/2026 13:32

I am just bam-fucking-boozled by this whole post! I have no idea what is going on!!

Ipollita · 21/03/2026 13:36

You can always tell when someone is middle class and doesn’t swear in real life. “Asshole” is the biggest giveaway, or describing someone or something as “badass”. It’s nauseating.

BiscoffCheesecakes · 21/03/2026 13:37

How does it sound on sm then, where you know nothing about the poster?

MrsMitford3 · 21/03/2026 13:38

Well I have a tea towel (not sure what that makes me) with Shakespearean insults-here are some when cockwomble just won't do.

Pernicious blood sucker of sleeping men

You Banbury cheese

Mountain of mad flesh

A most pathetical nit

Not much brain as ear wax

Quintessence of dust

Aye thou wast born to be a plague to men

Lewdly inclined foot licker

Canker-blossom

and as you flounce off "I do desire that we may be better strangers"

Badass is hardly swearing.

But I have yet to know anyone who doesn't swear irl

DiamondJones · 21/03/2026 13:39

Are middle class men allowed to swear?

JassyRadlett · 21/03/2026 13:43

In nearly a quarter of a century of living in Britain I thought I'd seen right to the limits of British people's class-obsessed hangups.

Brava, OP. You're broken a new frontier in my knowledge.

tartyflette · 21/03/2026 13:44

Spinningnewbie · 21/03/2026 12:21

Anyone who identifies themselves as middle class is cringeworthy fullstop.

My very middle class BIL, office job, likes art, bit of an intellectual, flatly denies he is middle class yet has no difficulty saying his brother is the real MC one.
Their background is WC, (immigrant parents), the only difference between them is educational.

SquallyShowersLater · 21/03/2026 13:44

Words like ruddy, Cockwomble, twunt etc are stupid words. Either swear or don't swear but if you are going to do it, do it properly and with conviction.

The only people who sound awkward swearing are the people who sort of pantomime whisper it with performative facial expressions (like my mother) because she thinks she's being incredibly naughty and edgy.

Class has nothing to do with it. It's all about confidence.

StormyLandCloud · 21/03/2026 13:45

Is fuck-a-doodle-do acceptable?

Gotta say I think that one's a bit shit.

Lou7171 · 21/03/2026 13:47

I sort of agree. Its like the same level of cringe you get when you see your teacher wearing jeans on a school trip, or when politicians try to talk about football..

I also can't bear the term fanny gallops. Cringey as fuck.

Yeah, that one's shit too.

takealettermsjones · 21/03/2026 13:50

Oh darn. I quite like cockwomble. What about fucknugget, can I use that? Twatbadger?

"Only working and upper class people sound right swearing"

Equal rights for everybody, that's what I say. Why should middle class women be constrained in their use of profanities when everyone else can say what they like?

Yuasa · 21/03/2026 13:51

There’s no ‘at least’ about it: cockwomble is unforgivably, appallingly twee and it is in no way preferable to soften swearing by adding cutesiness into the mix. Thankfully, this one and ‘hilarious’ alternatives like twatbadger seem to be dying off these days.

AngelicaArchangel · 21/03/2026 13:51

Second thread this week about swearing on here.

Is this the manosphere trying to make 'ladies' of us all?
