To cringe when middle class women swear

On Mumsnet at least they use embarrassing words like 'cockwomble' and think it's edgy. Only working and upper class people sound right swearing.

I see absolutely no reason for made-up swear words and think they're a bit childish. Either swear properly or don't fucking bother!

But I don't think of "cockwomble" as swearing, either. I think it's a rather nice word for someone being stupid, and lends itself to use as a verb, too.

HippeePrincess · 21/03/2026 12:42

Thank fuck I’m working class.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 21/03/2026 12:42

I agree about cockwomble. I am mc though and love a good ffs and bollocks/balls, have got me through some stressful moments. I am too mc for the C word though which I think the wc and uc females can get away with for some reason. Could not live without for fucks sake tho, esp when driving. Also fuck me and fucking hell. Plus jesus fucking christ, even though im an atheist.

Toottooot · 21/03/2026 12:44

Fa really gees a flying fuck fit class onybody sweering is onywye 🤷🏻‍♀️

bringincrazyback · 21/03/2026 12:44

Is ‘fuck-a-doodle-doo’ acceptable? It has been uttered by Hugh Grant, after all. Oh, but hang on… he’s a man. 🙄

WonkyMirror · 21/03/2026 12:45

Oh heck, I’m probably middle class. University educated, good career, money in the bank, blah blah… but I’m from the NE, am I allowed to swear with my NE accent or is it only southerners that are cringe?

i said “oh fuck sake” in the presence of the Waitrose delivery man earlier, because the wild garlic salmon an papillote was out of stock.
Will I go to working class hell?

I inadvertently said "For fuck's sake" at the lack of fresh pineapple in the supermarket the other day, but it didn't matter, as I was in Tesco, not Waitrose.

LBFseBrom · 21/03/2026 12:47

You can't hear people on Mumsnet. Don't be a snob!

I recommend a very good ITV series which I binge watched (all 3 series of it), on ITVX recently. I was enthralled. It's called, 'The Affair' and stars Dominic West and Ruth Wilson. I noticed S1 E1 was on ITV last night.

They use the words regularly and beautifully with far more class and style than DH Lawrence ever did.

So it’s ok for working class and posh women?
You can fuck right off with your classism.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 21/03/2026 12:49

Actually my nana (who considered herself middle class) rarely swore, or else it wasn’t within our earshot, so as not to affect our delicate ears.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 21/03/2026 12:50

Swearing is for everyone. It gives us joy and it’s free. Can’t say that about many things nowadays.

Alconleigh · 21/03/2026 12:51

No one has ever written the term cockwomble thinking it was edgy. If you think that you’re definitely not getting the tone of the place.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/03/2026 12:51

Perhaps after one's username one should have to show the NRS grade.
e.g. A, B, C1, C2, D or E.

Then with some simple tweaking, the Mumsnet site could automatically restrict certain words and phrases depending on your social class.

This feature could also offer a filter facility so that one could read just the postings of, say Posh People Only or the Lower Classes depending on your mood that day.

Anyone who identifies themselves as middle class is cringeworthy fullstop.

I mean why? Do you not accept that different classes exist? Or that people are able to allocate themselves to one?

Whosthetabbynow · 21/03/2026 12:34

I’m a South London Cockney. Swearing in that accent is my unique selling point.

I'm from Croydon, and will sometimes swear in a Croydon accent, just because it sounds so much ruder than in my normal RP voice.

My SIL (also Croydon born and bred) pisses herself laughing when I say "cunt", she reckons it doesn't sound rude when the terminal T is pronounced properly.

Ooh, I’d use those filters!

I didn't say I had a problem with swearing though. I just find some people don't it in an embarrassing and performative way. Especially on here.

Gosh, those self-consciously performative middle-classes, eh? What a shame they aren’t as authentic as viscounts and Cockney market traders unthinkingly calling one another cunts.

Right2BareArms · 21/03/2026 12:56

Maybe there could be a Mothersnet, Mamasnet, Mummysnet, Mamsnet, Momsnet etc to appeal to certain types.

I'd be in the Fishwifesnet.

Ah another middle class woman bashing thread.

2/10.

I’m probably working class but due to education private possibly middle class but lower.

What's with the grin? What that poster said wasn't funny. That's kind of what I mean. It's all so 'look how clever I am' and it's not.

Edited

It wasn’t funny to you

Aah but sometimes the hard ‘T’ can be used for emphasis ie someone is a complete cunT

PrincessofWells · 21/03/2026 13:05

Do fuck off - this is snobbery at its worst.
