To cringe when middle class women swear

On Mumsnet at least they use embarrassing words like 'cockwomble' and think it's edgy. Only working and upper class people sound right swearing.

@dopaminego Do you genuinely not understand that it is almost always meant ironically?

PennySweeet · 21/03/2026 12:33

I believe the OP to be both an Addle Pat and a Smellfungus.

So there.

Doseofreality · 21/03/2026 12:33

i said “oh fuck sake” in the presence of the Waitrose delivery man earlier, because the wild garlic salmon an papillote was out of stock.
Will I go to working class hell?

Well no. If it is it isn't very clever.

I would never say ‘cockwomble’ it’s not swearing.

It sounds thick rather than offensive.

Yes, your next delivery will be a Tesco.

Whosthetabbynow · 21/03/2026 12:34

I’m a South London Cockney. Swearing in that accent is my unique selling point.

Ooo look at you, all edgy, calling out middle class women on their swearing!

Judge much?

Yeah but loads overdo it, say things like 'fuck off to the far side of fuck' and stuff, just sounds so forced

Obviously fuck off to far side fuck etc is only a mumsnet thing. No people irl say this , as well as people pretending to be Scottish and saying ‘did ye aye?’ Or pretending to be Irish and saying ‘catch yourself on’
and people who say they’d ’tear someone a new one’ (vile) all seem to be people who exist solely on mumsnet.
regular folk swear as and when they need or want to, don’t need to turn it into performative bollocks because they think they sound edgy .
swearing transcends, age, class, race etc, in much the same way mental health issues do , and cancer etc.

Ok maybe so shouldn't have said middle class. I should have said 'some Mumsnet posters'.

Maybe you shouldn’t have said anything at all, since a very un U advanced search suggests you are not a total stranger to swearing yourself.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 21/03/2026 12:36

I said cunt on a thread the other day. It was fitting. I’m middle class. So shoot me.

Do naff 'orf dear !

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/03/2026 12:38

I'm working class born and bred. Council house, factory worker parents, big standard comp in the 80s ... everything working class can be. Now you would tell me I am middle class because of my education and job. I'm not. That working class girl is still there swearing like a trooper and worrying how long to the next pay check.
Don't assume classes.

Why some and not all? Which ones get a free pass?

Does cockrobin count as a swear word?

I didn't say I had a problem with swearing though. I just find some people don't it in an embarrassing and performative way. Especially on here.

Middle class here, highly educated and adore swearing.

Have started swearing a bit more freely now that all mine are older teens.

💩

Myoldbear · 21/03/2026 12:39

It's really individual; not class related at all.
My daughter swears and somehow it's not at all offensive, it's sort of a natural part of her, but really hard to describe unless you know her.

On the other hand, if I swore it wouldn't suit me at all, and I think my friends would find it really off. My son never swears either, and I'd be really shocked if he did.

It's all about being authentic I think.

12pup · 21/03/2026 12:40

I mean, who needs mediation or yoga for stress release, just bloody swear, it's so calming.

But maybe the OP is the reincarnation of Dick Van Dyke?

As long as she's not Mary Poppins, she can curse to her heart's content.

No, only when “middle class” women do it.

Maybe you should get help for that misogyny.

Well come on then, name names, give us actual examples.
We need to know what it is you find so awful you were compelled to come and scold everyone!
