To cringe when middle class women swear

On Mumsnet at least they use embarrassing words like 'cockwomble' and think it's edgy. Only working and upper class people sound right swearing.

OP posts:

Yeah but loads overdo it, say things like 'fuck off to the far side of fuck' and stuff, just sounds so forced

But how can you tell their middle class from that? That actually sounds like something a lower class person would say

Right2BareArms · 21/03/2026 12:56

Maybe there could be a Mothersnet, Mamasnet, Mummysnet, Mamsnet, Momsnet etc to appeal to certain types.

I'd be in the Fishwifesnet.

And I would be standing right next to you. I swear to the point where I think it outweighs non swearing sometimes. It is an outlet and something I absolutely cannot do at work so home it is. I laugh when I hear good sweary descriptions, cockwomble, thundercunt, wankpuffin, and save them up to use appropriately. I don’t care if you swear or not. Are you kind, happy and generally a good egg. If so crack on. No judgement here.

SpidersAreShitheads · 21/03/2026 13:55

I particularly dislike new swear words/insults that people use because they’re trendy. Cockwomble is the are perfect example of this.

But then I also really detest portmanteau words like “chillax”.

However, I also recognise that it’s a personal preference and that I’m not the gatekeeper of language.

Crucially, I also don’t differentiate between men and women, or social class. Language is one of the very few things that is equally available to all.

If you don’t like middle-class women swearing OP then I’d suggest you a) stay off Mumsnet because many of the dreadful women here will actually use whatever language they want…..shocking! and b) don’t want Deadloch. It’s a humorous crime drama that is crammed full of women saying cunt on a regular basis. (Second season dropped yesterday for anyone interested - it’s absolutely brilliant).

DoloresDelEriba · 21/03/2026 13:55

Fuck you and fuck your bourgeois opinions.

FreebieWallopFridge · 21/03/2026 13:56

Why is it only middle class women you have a problem with? Do middle class men swearing piss you off too?

ilovesooty · 21/03/2026 13:56

dopaminego · 21/03/2026 12:29

What's with the grin? What that poster said wasn't funny. That's kind of what I mean. It's all so 'look how clever I am' and it's not.

Edited

Do you think your thread is intrinsically clever or interesting? I don't. I think it's a bit peculiar.

Also, I forgot my username has a swear word.

I maintain shithead is a brilliant term for anyone or anything that is in fact acting like a shithead.

FromtheBalustrade · 21/03/2026 14:00

I think I know what you mean.
It’s not the cursing in itself, it’s the attitude. It’s a bit awkward and unnatural and you can tell they’re aware of it like when teenagers start using curse words. A good example upthread was “I’m highly educated and I adore swearing” (sorry to that poster). Where I’m from, nobody would ever think to “adore swearing”. It’s just part of talking.
I have always thought that the “sweary threads” that come up on occasion are a bit cringeworthy. I can see twelve year olds doing this, but I don’t get the entertainment value for grown adults.

Suedoh · 21/03/2026 14:02

@dopaminegoTake the fucking stick outta your arse.
HTH

Wishihadanalgorithm · 21/03/2026 14:05

IRL I adore hearing proper posh women swear. It sounds so much better than rough people effing and jeffing in ever sentence - especially towards their children.

LittleBinChicken · 21/03/2026 14:06

I kind of agree. For me, it’s those who refer to babies and small children “pissing”. I hate it, it’s so jarring and needlessly angry/aggressive. Nothing to do with class though.

Dliplop · 21/03/2026 14:09

Bless.

AlexRidersButt · 21/03/2026 14:10

@MrsMitford3 - I always like "the son and heir of a mongrel bitch" from King Lear.

That whole speech from Kent to Oswald is a treasure trove of insults.

OP, no one thinks cockwomble is 'edgy'. It's the absurdity. I'm all for a little absurdity now and again.

LisaVanderpumpy · 21/03/2026 14:12

Or think they are really fun because..... they like olly murrs

andthat · 21/03/2026 14:15

dopaminego · 21/03/2026 12:32

Ok maybe so shouldn't have said middle class. I should have said 'some Mumsnet posters'.

Yeah the class thing… I mean how do you even define it? Curious so that I know if you’re ok with me saying ‘fuck off’, or not?

My dad got into computer games in his early seventies and he always used Shithead as his username😆 It’s a great word!

SidewaysOtter · 21/03/2026 14:16

Well fuck my old boots, it’s another scolding thread for women who swear!

LisaVanderpumpy · 21/03/2026 14:19

I actually heard someone say norks in realife once

AnnieLummox · 21/03/2026 14:23

Why are there some many threads on this lately? People swear on Mumsnet all the time; they always have. Either get used to it or get off it!

Berlinlover · 21/03/2026 14:24

YABU Nobody should swear.

Could you explain how you know they are middle class?

In nearly a quarter of a century of living in Britain I thought I'd seen right to the limits of British people's class-obsessed hangups.

Brava, OP. You're broken a new frontier in my knowledge.

Definitely need a laughing button on here.. this made me chuckle.

It's sad to say British people are so tribal, sadly you have to know your place and the op's thread demonstrates this in comical style.

YABU Nobody should swear.

Seems a minority opinion on here. Thank fuck.

Morepositivemum · 21/03/2026 14:30

Nobody sounds right swearing and it’s creating a generation of kids who no longer see a problem with the f word but have descended to using any curse they can find to shock. Was on a bus the other day and most people were throwing around the f word and it started ringing in my ears ‘went to the effing shop the other night and there was this effing b in front of me and the c took forever’ etc etc.

People cursing results in the like of the thread on at the mo where her and her partner who have a seven month old call each other fat and ugly and joke about smashing the other’s head in.

I was at school in the 80s and we all swore. It’s fine not to like it but you can’t police other people’s language.
