Came up with a ridiculous business idea in my sleep. Tell me how bad it is

Ok, it’s a huge cruise ship in a warehouse, that doesn’t move. You pay to stay on it and you’ll have the whole cruise experience without the moving around or being on the sea. There would be light projections to simulate night and day, and also it would be warm.
I guess my market would be people who can’t afford a cruise and/or aren’t that bothered by the destinations side. My grandparents who have been on lots of cruises say some people don’t bother to get off to see Rome or wherever.
I was thinking about those Disney cruises where the selling point is the cruise itself and the activities/ water park.
It would also be a safe bet due to being in a controlled environment. Wouldn’t be disrupted by wars or weather conditions.
I think I was inspired by the huge ship they built for the film Titanic.

Actually, on this theme I did think some while ago that a virtual reality holiday experience would be a good idea. So, if you cant afford to go to the Maldives for example you just put on your virtual reality headset and you're there.

ooh yes, with UV lights that can tan you😂😂😂

Well, nobody advertises anything using people looking like miserable cunts, do they, now? 🤷‍♀️

No that's true but some look slightly insane😆It's the couple all dressed up and standing on the deserted deck gazing over the sea in the moonlight that get me though, where are the rest of the herd have they been confind to cabins while the ad was made?
Did a stint through Bay of Biscay once and that was enough to put me off, the whales and dolphins were great it was some of the humans that were the problem. Costa del Crap on water.

And how cheap do you think they're going to be able to do this?

She's never going to book out a cruise ship every day with people who are too scared of the sea, or are unable to travel.

Cruise ships are bloody massive and then there's the huge cost of running it, providing food, entertainment and all the other things that go with running a hotel.

The business would sink straight away.

Pun absolutely intended.

I very much took the OP to be light-hearted. I don't think she's really serious. I do think there could be a market for it, but it would be a huge investment.

Createausername1970 · 21/03/2026 16:03

I am boggling about the size of the warehouse and how would you actually get a cruise ship into it.

I really want to see how it's done - but no chance I would stay in it.

Bless, are you that bored on a Saturday. You need to get a hobby rather than make up Mumsnet posts

I never understand why people choose to click on silly, lighthearted threads that they aren't interested in and then further choose to engage with those threads to berate the OP as to what a waste of everybody's time they think the threads are and how the OP should never have started them!

WhatNextImScared · 21/03/2026 16:14

Just go to a very posh hotel with a good spa?

I think some people believe that life must always be strictly serious - yet they nevertheless choose to come on MN to actively look for and engage with silly threads that are just a bit of fun!

A resort hotel with no natural light or fresh air? Terrible idea!

Viviennemary · 21/03/2026 16:20

Sorry op but it sounds totally bonkers. But you could use it as a tutorial on how to set up a business which will fail.

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/03/2026 16:26

There was a flotel near me. Same idea but no warehouse

Jollyhockeystickss · 21/03/2026 16:31

I think you will find there are hundreds of hotels in the world that are either on the water or resemble cruise ships or ships, there is probably somewhere in the world an old cruise ship in dry dock that you can rent rooms

RantyRant3555 · 21/03/2026 16:38

Dreadful Idea but I know a certain orange man you can sell it the idea to as a place he can resolve wars - as long as it includes a peace prize.

Presumably you would have to build the warehouse around the ship

Gmary22 · 21/03/2026 17:35

What your describing is a hotel with no windows. Absolute hell.

pollymere · 21/03/2026 17:48

We used to stay in luxury hotels when I was a kid. They were designed so you didn't need to venture outside. Usually a pool, spa facilities and tennis/badminton courts.

These days you've got places like Potters Resorts.

5128gap · 21/03/2026 17:49

There couldn't be a warehouse big enough. It would need to be outside. Maybe somewhere on water so you'd get the movement for free rather than using costly machinery. Perhaps on the sea so you'd get the real movement experience. You could even have it actually move across the sea to best results. Perhaps in an area where there was nice scenery to save the faff of the projections. The Carribean or the med maybe.
But yeah, I like it. Could put the cruise industry out of business altogether.

Indeed, the original QM is at Long Beach, you can stay in it as a hotel, and (I think) visit it as a day visitor for exhibitions, or to use the restaurant.

Trishyb10 · 21/03/2026 18:40

So you must have millions in the bank to set it up?? or are you make the ship out of cardboard? let us onow more of the plan so we can help x

Maybe in her dreams, whence this originated, she does have millions - or even billions!!

This is one of the worst ideas ive ever heard.

What next- a safari experience for people who cant afford to go on a safari?

Actors could get dressed up in lion costumes and roar past a stationary 4x4 which simulates driving? 🤣

Sneakily reading MN at a wedding of a distant in law and literally laughed out loud.

This is better than the safari park idea they actually came up with for people

reversegear · 21/03/2026 20:33

So a holiday resort in an earthquake zone?

I thought of another idea!
working from home cubes
It’s a bit like a huge lockable container, you sit in with your laptop. It has air con and speakers. Mutes all conversations to other people in the house to protect confidentiality.
Helps focus and also promotes good work/ life balance. You cannot enter after 5pm unless you press a special access code.
Provides a summary to employers of time spent in the pod.
Terrifying and useful, eh?

Also already exists. Phone booths in offices.

What???

KimberleyClark · 22/03/2026 08:41

simpsonthecat · 21/03/2026 12:38

@Yoperreosolo Kudos for thinking of this!

Having been on many a cruise on small niche ships all over the world... personally I can't think of anything worse! Let me tell you why, as far as I'm concerned.

I love the sea. the sea air, the passing tankers and small boats. The stormy conditions and the sea when it's so calm it's like a sheet of glass. I could stare at the sea, the sunrises, the sunsets and everything in between literally all day. It centres me. The vast open horizons are like a true escape for me.

The rhythmic movements, the sounds, the changing colours of the ocean, the wind, the calm peacefulness, just everything about it.

You cannot re-create that.

Of course maybe for some, the sea bit of being on a cruise is irrelevant. I have no idea!

Yes, all of this, plus now that it is possible to fly to the other side of the world in 24 hours, it harks back to the days when travel was of necessity a leisurely business and the journey was half the pleasure of the trip.
