Came up with a ridiculous business idea in my sleep. Tell me how bad it is

Ok, it’s a huge cruise ship in a warehouse, that doesn’t move. You pay to stay on it and you’ll have the whole cruise experience without the moving around or being on the sea. There would be light projections to simulate night and day, and also it would be warm.
I guess my market would be people who can’t afford a cruise and/or aren’t that bothered by the destinations side. My grandparents who have been on lots of cruises say some people don’t bother to get off to see Rome or wherever.
I was thinking about those Disney cruises where the selling point is the cruise itself and the activities/ water park.
It would also be a safe bet due to being in a controlled environment. Wouldn’t be disrupted by wars or weather conditions.
I think I was inspired by the huge ship they built for the film Titanic.

Awww don't let people knock your idea down OP! There's a mix of people calling it 'bonkers' and yet people are also saying 'it already exists in a different form'; so you carry on inventing and imagining, and if you dream the winning lottery numbers feel free to start a thread😀
Enjoy your weekend!☀️

Hotels (built on land) pretending to be ships are already a thing. Liverpool has two, The Liner and The Titanic. I’m sure they’re everywhere.

It really is quite freaky walking down the corridors with portholes in the Liner. I swear you can feel the swell of the waves under your feet 🤣.

How in the Jane McDonald would this ever work?!

I just can't see the point of it.

I think it could have a very good point. Some people are too scared to travel, some can't because of health conditions, they are disabled so logistics of travel very difficult. If this 'cruise ship' is reasonably priced it could give those who could not afford it a chance to go and have the experience. I will be buying shares in OPs company.

WaryHiker · 21/03/2026 10:00

It's not an intrinsically terrible idea at all, OP. I think you would need to have your warehouse ship entirely surrounded by screens, including one for the sky. Then you could project moving scenes onto them and give the impression you really were sailing. Sound effects and smells too. If you have ever been on the ride called Soarin' at Epcot, you'll know the kind of thing I mean. I'll definitely be booking in for a long weekend to somewhere warm and sunny.

Pricelessadvice · 21/03/2026 10:00

A motion-sickness-inducing hotel.
Bravo OP! 😂

glitterchops · 21/03/2026 10:00

Actually, on this theme I did think some while ago that a virtual reality holiday experience would be a good idea. So, if you cant afford to go to the Maldives for example you just put on your virtual reality headset and you're there.

This is one of the worst ideas ive ever heard.

What next- a safari experience for people who cant afford to go on a safari?

Actors could get dressed up in lion costumes and roar past a stationary 4x4 which simulates driving? 🤣

That sounds fun! I'd take the kids lol

Screamingabdabz · 21/03/2026 10:01

Once you’d factored in all the technical requirements to simulate a cruise it probably wouldn’t be any cheaper than an actual cruise.

Keep on dreaming though. We need entrepreneurs.

Applying for the patent right now!

InterestedDad37 · 21/03/2026 10:04

If it rocks up and down a bit, it's a winner. You could also sell other people the opportunity to come and chuck buckets of salty water at it, to maximise that 'oceanic' feel. Add in a rampant tummy bug or other contagious condition, and it's perfect 😀👌🛳️⚓

Delatron · 21/03/2026 10:06

I think the lack of daylight may put people off!! They don’t go on cruises to stay inside 😅.

As an aside. Artificial light is not great for health. We need natural light every day.

Anxietyspiral · 21/03/2026 10:06

You'd need a massive warehouse 😂

I love bonkers ideas like this. I follow Suzy Batiz the lady that started VIPoo toilet spray. She was 38, divorced, and bankrupt and had a crazy idea for a spray that trapped poo smells in the bowl. A few years later she had built a £400 million company.

Whatafustercluck · 21/03/2026 10:07

You could do this at a fraction of the cost, op, and the margins would be huge. Simply rent a couple of rooms and buy in some VR headsets. Heat the rooms well during the day, lower the temperature at night. Spray some water at them periodically to mimic sea spray. You could even give them the illusion of some day trips. All you'd need to work on is some other 4D effects.

Charlize43 · 21/03/2026 10:08

Yesitsmeimback · 21/03/2026 09:42

Isn't that a hotel?

That's what I was thinking...

Holdmybeermoment · 21/03/2026 10:09

All I can think of is how bad that warehouse would smell.

People don’t want to be boxed up in a wobbly ship in a warehouse.

I like this idea OP 💡

I think tons of people would go for this as an experience! Like an extended VR time scenario!

Im not sure you'd get people there for a week though, perhaps a night or 2!

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 21/03/2026 10:11

Er... Queen Mary Hotel, Long Beach anyone?

What am I missing?

Wishicouldgetofftgesofa · 21/03/2026 10:12

The cruise ships sort of already do it. You can go overnight at Tilbury but the ship doesn’t move its moorings and obviously the weather is whatever it is 😃 (then a day or so later it leaves for a proper cruise).

PrimaryParent2 · 21/03/2026 10:12

I suggest you go to Hong Kong and take a shopping trip to The Whampoa. It might help you iron out some of the details: https://www.discoverhongkong.com/eng/place-to-go/travel.guide-the-whampoa.html

You also also just put waterbeds in a normal resort hotel.

The Whampoa

The Whampoa is a large mall of over 300 shops and several themed worlds, designed to look like an ocean-going cruise ship.

I think this is brilliant, I'd definitely go on one of those safaris just for a laugh 😂
Never a real one (I've seen On The Buses too many times to have been put off those 😁)

Copilot helped me come up with an image of your brain wave. You’re welcome

Yoperreosolo · 21/03/2026 10:15

I was joking with the moving bit.
The only thing that I’m serious about is that ‘experiences’ are the biggest thing at the moment, much more popular than stuff. We are busier than ever. Plus with wars and global warming, things will get more expensive and less desirable.
I think many people aren’t that bothered about authentic. I went on the safari ‘ride’ in Chessington and it felt like safari to me, I didn’t really care that the animals were caged. If anything it helped as I could see them all easily. I think many people think the same. All these ideas of travelling based on you being in the sole intrepid explorer, the first to see something, they’re all illusions. Then people come back from Dubrovnik or Lake Bled and complain about the ‘tourists’ ruining their experience. How much is people feeling that they ‘should’ see those things regardless of if they enjoy it.
How much of what we remember and enjoy of holidays is pizza with the family, your child’s first water slide, the quiet margarita in peace by the pool at dusk, all that could be simulated.
Has anyone ever been to Lalandia, Denmark? They have a giant artificial Greek marketplace with a sky projector which makes it ‘feel’ sunny and at night, a beautiful night sky. Sitting there, under the stars, you forget you’re in rainy Denmark, it’s perfect.

I had some crazy ideas in the depths of sleep deprivation getting up with newborn to feed. I remember one was setting up a business painting quotes onto mugs. I think (I had PND) I wanted a specific quote and couldn't find it so my mind ran with it, it would be my amazing business, I'd have staff! I woke up in the morning and found hundreds of sites doing the exact idea as well as Etsy etc.

Are any of those places where you actually stay the entire time locked in a warehouse though? For sleeping, eating, entertainment and all the activities. Locked in a warehouse with artificial lights for your entire stay.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 21/03/2026 10:18

Make it pirate themed OP and I’ll definitely give
it a go! I want to sleep in a hammock and drink rum 😆
