Came up with a ridiculous business idea in my sleep. Tell me how bad it is

Ok, it’s a huge cruise ship in a warehouse, that doesn’t move. You pay to stay on it and you’ll have the whole cruise experience without the moving around or being on the sea. There would be light projections to simulate night and day, and also it would be warm.
I guess my market would be people who can’t afford a cruise and/or aren’t that bothered by the destinations side. My grandparents who have been on lots of cruises say some people don’t bother to get off to see Rome or wherever.
I was thinking about those Disney cruises where the selling point is the cruise itself and the activities/ water park.
It would also be a safe bet due to being in a controlled environment. Wouldn’t be disrupted by wars or weather conditions.
I think I was inspired by the huge ship they built for the film Titanic.

The only issue imo is, that you wouldn’t get to see all the people late back running down the port as they watch the ship sail off.

LargeAmericanoQuick · 21/03/2026 10:33

I like the look of that @GlasgowGal2014

Have you been?

HoppityBun · 21/03/2026 10:34

I do like the idea of this, but I don’t see that it will be much different from going on a retreat.

On a retreat type holiday, which doesn’t have any religious association, you have scheduled activities like yoga and possibly a gym. You often have a swimming pool and a sunroom and set times for eating. The number of people attending would, of course, be far fewer than on a cruise ship. That’s a definite plus for me.

If you put it on a mountain, say, or somewhere equally isolated and different, wouldn’t you have the same type of experience? So what I’m saying is I don’t think your idea is much different, except for being a lot more difficult and expensive to organise.

What I wouldn’t like about being stuck in a warehouse with projections of weather and so on, is it there would be no fresh air and no real daylight or sunlight.

And where's the duty free coming from? 😱

No I haven't been yet but I know quite a few people who have, and they enjoyed it. It seems to be in the in thing to do for 50th birthdays at the moment!

Yanbu. 😂

VickyEadieofThigh · 21/03/2026 10:37

The smallest new cruise ships cost at least 500 million dollars to build. The biggest cost over 2 billion dollars.

Mind, you'd also need an ENORMOUS building to put it in...

Thanks. Might just book that next time I'm there.

Cherryicecreamx · 21/03/2026 10:39

What about just a cruise ship style hotel? Maybe even located next to the sea to give you a better feel for it.

Sorry op, this idea has already been taken. Just Google "static boat parties" and loads of examples come up. Nothing stopping you from doing it too, though, if you have the money.

Sorry, meant to say "static boat hotels", not parties. Either way the idea has been taken already but throw your hat into the ring if you think you're on to something!

GeneralPeter · 21/03/2026 10:41

It might not even be cheaper, as you will have to pay UK wages and taxes (if it’s here).

Ilovemyshed · 21/03/2026 10:43

My "for you feed" on Tiktok showed a couple of videos of those the other day, so funny.
"Pier Runners" I think it was called. People legging it back to ship from the other side of the harbour and someone doing a running commentary from the comfort of the ship with their glass of wine or whatever 😂
"Aaaaaand here they come! Will they make it?! Here's "Sandra and Brian", last leg now, 5 minutes to go....
I was getting second hand anxiety for them 😁

I quite like ACTUAL sea air, OP.

Bonkers but delightfully bonkers. Have you got any more ideas for us please?

BOATEL or FLOATEL.

Zov · 21/03/2026 10:51

That is a terrible idea sorry @Yoperreosolo 😆 I wouldn't pay a single dime for this 'static cruise ship on land.' As has been said, it's just a hotel!

This is one of the worst ideas ive ever heard.

What next- a safari experience for people who cant afford to go on a safari?

Actors could get dressed up in lion costumes and roar past a stationary 4x4 which simulates driving? 🤣

🤣🤣

OverTired26 · 21/03/2026 10:54

This reminds me of the tropical island in Germany. An entire "tropical island" that's heated and decorated to feel as such. Build in a dome. Quite nice when it's pissing down and you get to essentially sun yourself on the beach!

The idea of doing something you'd love to, but in a way that's more accessible/cheaper.

Tons better than the OP's idea tbh.

mugglewump · 21/03/2026 10:55

It sounds like a glorified bunker. Who would choose to be somewhere with no daylight and no fresh air for the duration of their holiday?

A cruise ship docked in a harbour, maybe. But in some towering shed (these ships are very big and very tall), what would that cost to build?

I think your maths are wrong thinking it would be cheaper, I think the set up costs would be atronomical and the appeal minimal.

Leopardprintpyjamas · 21/03/2026 10:56

🤣🤣 this already exists in some places. I believe it is known as a hotel!!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 21/03/2026 10:56

Sounds like the Mary Rose theme park ride…
