Came up with a ridiculous business idea in my sleep. Tell me how bad it is

Ok, it’s a huge cruise ship in a warehouse, that doesn’t move. You pay to stay on it and you’ll have the whole cruise experience without the moving around or being on the sea. There would be light projections to simulate night and day, and also it would be warm.
I guess my market would be people who can’t afford a cruise and/or aren’t that bothered by the destinations side. My grandparents who have been on lots of cruises say some people don’t bother to get off to see Rome or wherever.
I was thinking about those Disney cruises where the selling point is the cruise itself and the activities/ water park.
It would also be a safe bet due to being in a controlled environment. Wouldn’t be disrupted by wars or weather conditions.
I think I was inspired by the huge ship they built for the film Titanic.

Sounds like torture, not a holiday!

A cruise would be my idea of torture. Surrounded by a couple of 1000 randoms and trillions of litres of water a.k.a the ocean. Couldn't pay me enough, plus on the ads everyone is grinning like maniacs, THAT I find disturbing especially when it's over a plate with 2 mouths of wanky presented food.😆

Marchspringss · 21/03/2026 14:27

I can see it. You you could play ( project) those 3D images- videos they have in those Immerse experience museums ( I went to the Titanic one and with VR headset, we walked those the ship and It felt very real.
Also yes the ship could simulate some movement so it would felt like being on the board. Playing various images from different countries around on screens, Lao it would look like for example you are in Italy.

Marchspringss · 21/03/2026 14:28

LassiKopiano24 · 21/03/2026 10:32

The only issue imo is, that you wouldn’t get to see all the people late back running down the port as they watch the ship sail off.

You could simulate those. I was at the titanic immerse exhibition and we were on the titanic and people we waving us off.

Kay286 · 21/03/2026 14:33

Sounds awful tbh , I don’t fancy cruises anyway but if I it would be because you get to see loads of different places. If you take that away then your saying but the inside experience would be the same - cruise ships are pretty high end inside so you’d need a ton of money to build and staff it for the same interior and amenities- so the cost to go wouldn’t be cheap anyway (which you said was your target market ) so if I’m paying good money I’d just go on a proper vacation or a fancy hotel resort … not a warehouse

onlyshowposts · 21/03/2026 14:41

I’m not sure there’s much market for people who want to go on holiday to a….giant warehouse. 😂

I thought of another idea!
working from home cubes
It’s a bit like a huge lockable container, you sit in with your laptop. It has air con and speakers. Mutes all conversations to other people in the house to protect confidentiality.
Helps focus and also promotes good work/ life balance. You cannot enter after 5pm unless you press a special access code.
Provides a summary to employers of time spent in the pod.
Terrifying and useful, eh?

Disney did the cruises to nowhere in Covid. One of their newest ships is only having sea days from Singapore aswell.
sorry, OP. Other than the fact that you’re suggesting dry dock The idea has been done.

Kay286 · 21/03/2026 14:58

@Yoperreosolo i hope you have a well paid regular job op - entrepreneurial you are not 😂

ERthree · 21/03/2026 15:09

Some cruise ships look amazing and i have always wondered why they don't do "harbour" stays for those that don't like being in open seas.

mondaytosunday · 21/03/2026 15:11

Uh, hotel resorts?
While some (weird) people might not get off the ship, wouldn’t they rather be on the sea rather than landlocked, let alone in an enclosed building? Again- hotel? I’ve been in a couple cruises and the whole point was going fine where I’ve never been without flying, and exploring new paces with the the excursions arranged. I’ve been to the Norwegian fjords, Honfluer, Amsterdam/Holland, Bruge…

It really is quite freaky walking down the corridors with portholes in the Liner. I swear you can feel the swell of the waves under your feet 🤣.

The Titanic is not a ship built on land. It is a high class hotel in Liverpool that is built on the docks and named after the ship that left from the docks

Well, nobody advertises anything using people looking like miserable cunts, do they, now? 🤷‍♀️

Nor is the Liner, we remember when it used to be the Gladstone.

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 21/03/2026 15:32

My long deceased grandma used to go on "land lovers cruises" where a hotel had a location theme each day with talks and themed meals. That was in the 80s so i dont think you've invented it.. apart from the ship in a hangar bit 🤣

FastFood · 21/03/2026 15:34

I think I'd prefer to go to jail.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 21/03/2026 15:38

I mean, during Covid when the HK borders were closed for 2+ years, cruise ships did “cruises to nowhere” where you got on the boat and just sailed out and around HK waters for 2 days and then back into port and those sold out instantly, so it’s possibly not the craziest idea ever.

Yes, because a lot of people love being on a boat out at sea, not stuck in a warehouse, and I don't think screens etc. can replicate that experience. 🤷‍♀️

No, it was, and still is, a shit idea, but I'm enjoying the thread anyway.

Exceptcycles · 21/03/2026 15:48

Oh god no that sounds horrible! People go on cruises for the sea breeze, the views, the heat and the fact they take them places! I’m not sure many people would sign up to a hotel in a warehouse…

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/03/2026 15:48

Maybe your talents lie in the direction of dystopian fiction OP? Or not even quite fiction as both ideas sound scarily like they might be happening somewhere in the world already.
