To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:01

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

All this outrage is so weird to me. It's a garbage bin?

I live in a big city in the US where most commonly the bins are kept in the alleys behind the houses. Around here, if you're out on a walk with a pooch and he/she poops, you pick it up and toss the bag in the closest bin, simple as that. I've literally never heard of anyone giving any thought to the "owner" of a bin. They all belong to the city, anyway, you just get the use of them.

icouldholditwithacobweb · 16/03/2026 17:30

WTF is all the outrage on this thread - the bin was emptied immediately after! If someone put a baby nappy in my bin and it was emptied right after, I wouldn't care, it'd be gone. It's not like it'd be there stinking the bin out for days. Do peope really have nothing better to worry about than bagged dog poo in a bin for a couple of minutes?!

whymadam · 16/03/2026 17:31

Of course its all right, OP. Those bins are probably half full of dog shit anyway, or where do all the dog owners in the country put all the mess that happens in their own gardens etc? I don't even have a dog, but I have dog poo bags for fox, cat, hedgehog poo I find in the garden. I sling all of it, bagged, into my bin. If my bin is out on the pavement, people are welcome to add! I'd much prefer this to the POS dog walker in my street who just lets his beast poo on the pavement. Wait til I catch HIM out!!!

veggietabless · 16/03/2026 17:33

I don't have a dog but I think most of the people on this thread are completely mental. It's a bagged item that's about to go in a bin lorry, what is wrong with people?

Pudmyboy · 16/03/2026 17:34

caffeinedependent · 16/03/2026 16:09

I don't get the outrage, I would have done the same if the bins were out on the street waiting to be emptied. Also, technically bins aren't people's properties either, they belong to the council, so I think everyone needs to take a step back and stop being so petty.

If someone rents a house from the council, the house belongs to the council, but it doesn't mean you can pop in and use their loo, sit in their garden, take a bath just because you pay your council tax..the bins are allocated to the household and the householder is responsible for them, if the bin is damaged (permanent stink) it's not automatically replaced free of charge. So it's not petty.

WildLeader · 16/03/2026 17:34

You’re all fucking bonkers!!

it’s rubbish. Its in a poo bag going in the bin!

I do this every other week if I’m on the lane. I wouldn’t give a toss if anyone put their dog poo bag in my bin. I’d rather that any day of the week over not picking up after their dog.

@AnnaQuayRules Yanbu. That bloke was bonkers!

WildLeader · 16/03/2026 17:36

Oh thank god, some common sense has entered the thread 🐕

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 17:37

Thank you @MyThreeWords that's a really interesting point of view.

To everyone who says it's "minging" or "disgusting", I've said I accept that people feel v strongly about it and I won't do it again. But just to clarify for people who haven't read my OP properly.... The bin lorry was in the street. The bin I put it into was about 2 houses away from being emptied.

Every time my dog has a crap I pick it up and put it in a dog bin or in a public bin, or I take it home and put it in my own bin. Just because I misjudged this time does NOT mean I chuck poi bags over hedges or tie them in trees, as some people are accusing me of.

You don’t clean your bin? That’s minging. At least once a month I spray mine with Jeys wipe the outside and clean inside them with an old mop. During the pandemic local bin men were asking us to wipe the handles of our bins before we put it out.

I’ve never cleaned my wheelie bin either.

17 years. It’s a bin. Outside.

What are you all doing with yours?

Bristolandlazy · 16/03/2026 17:37

Voted YANBU in error. That's vile, I don't have a dog,, it's not my problem.

Thereissnowinmywellies · 16/03/2026 17:39

Where I live most people carry bags of dog shit around like it's a badge of honour. but at least they are clearing it up.
Either put it in a proper dog waste bin or take it home with you.

Doesn't matter if the dust are about to pick the bin up, you don't stick in someone elses bin. End of.

Cosyblankets · 16/03/2026 17:42

It would not bother me in the slightest

backinthebox · 16/03/2026 17:43

I live on a local dog walking route. People even drive out here to walk their dogs in the countryside. Our bins are only collected once every 3 weeks. Dog walkers will often drop poo bags in our bins if we don’t bring them in immediately after the bins have been emptied, which means we then have to put up with the dog poo in the bottom of our bin for 3 weeks. It’s just revolting to have to deal with other people’s poo.

And I've now said three times that I won't be doing it again. Lesson learned

In this scenario, as described by the OP, with the bin van in sight already collecting...

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

(No, I'm not a dog owner)

Thereissnowinmywellies · 16/03/2026 17:45

Back that's so skanky of people. So bloody lazy.

I would go batshit bambarta if someone dumped dog-do in my bin, especially since I've newly wallpapered and carpeted it, and installed state-of-the-art A/C and air-freshening system.

My bin is also fully internet-equipped so footage of you doing the deed would immediately be uploaded to YouTube, X, the local police station, NATO, the UN and the Daily Mail.

You have made me laugh 'I've newly wallpapered and carpeted it.'
The only thing I would add to your post is - X (formerly known as Twitter). 😀
You have my sense of humour!

snoopyfanaccountant · 16/03/2026 17:46

As long as it was in the correct bin, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest (and I say that as someone who has no desire to ever own a dog). The bin is on a public footpath and on loan from the council - I don't own it.
We live in the centre of town and our food and garden waste bin often gets missed (we have no neighbours so I think they just forget us). I report it and it eventually gets emptied but it infuriates me that I regularly have to remove McDonalds packaging and random waste from it which shouldn't be in it so that it doesn't get tagged. I would much rather that someone used our bin for the correct waste rather than them chucking their rubbish on the ground and we then have to pick up everything that has blown into our garden.

Parsleyforme · 16/03/2026 17:55

I would rather someone put rubbish from the street (including dog poo) in my bin than just left it on the street. If they’re filling up my bin with rubbish from home, that’s a different thing. But if they did it immediately before the bin is emptied then I wouldn’t know and therefore wouldn’t care. It’s not like it’s batteries (dangerous) or murder weapons (criminal). My bin is gross because that’s where rubbish goes, bagged poo wont make it grosser and I wouldn’t know if it did because the lid is always shut

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 16/03/2026 17:55

Meanwhile, back in the real world, that was absolutely fine OP, not something I would do myself, but honestly can’t imagine getting worked up about it. The man was being weird.

SerafinasGoose · 16/03/2026 18:00

I am rarely this disparaging toward any OP, but people like this disgust me and all I can say is, good for the home owner.

Not a surprise to see this kind of grotesque, entitled behaviour from yet another dog owner. As for the other one of that breed who commented upthread that home owners don't even own their wheelie bins, they belong to the council: will either the council nor the repellent dog owners throwing excrement in other people's bins be coming over to do the clean-up? Somehow, I very much doubt it .

Some people really do have some disgusting ways and absolutely could not give a furry rat's backside about basic courtesy to others. The level of entitlement and sheer lack of consideration are off the scale.

Sickening.

You don't own it. But if someone threw one of those disgusting bags in the bin you use, you'll be the one having to clean it.

Why would I have to clean it? For years I threw nappy sacks full of poo into the wheely bin and never once did a nappy sack burst or result in poo on the inside of the bin; why are dog poo sacks any different?
