To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 16:01

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

If you'd bothered to read the whole thread you'd know that the refuse collectors aren't allowed to do that here. No one can throw anything directly into the lorry - including the operatives

No one needs to be bothered to read the whole thread, or your excuses for what you did to know that you were bang out of order.

Putting your dog's shit in someone else's bin is entirely unacceptable in any circumstances, so stop trying to justify it.

The levels of rage on this thread are unhinged.

You don't need to be so arsey with people who have taken the trouble to answer your question.

What you did would be nasty and offensive to many people as you are now discovering. It is not mitigated by the close proximity of the dustbin lorry, nor the flimsy little sack you put the shit in.

I wouldn't care if the dustbin man was standing next to the bin, waiting to empty it. I wouldn't want your dog's shit anywhere near it.

You keep saying you've learned a lesson and won't do it again, but at the same time keep trying to justify what you did. It's unacceptable to put your dog shit in other people's bins in any circumstances.

Take it home and put it in your own bin.

The level of aggression towards the OP on the thread is far more ‘nasty and offensive’ than her putting literally anything in a bin. People here are so strange.

I’m tempted to drop dog shit in random bins under cover of darkness and then advertise my bin cleaning service (weekly subscriptions only) by day.

Exactly, a bagged portion of dog poo in a bin about to be emptied isn’t the crime of the century

Emmz1510 · 16/03/2026 20:09

Meh, I’m not sure. On the one hand, better off in a bin than left on the ground or (as you do sometimes see!) tied to a tree (?!!). And as you say, you could see it was about to be emptied. Where I live there really aren’t enough public bins, so it wouldn’t surprise me people using the general waste bins on bin day.
However, it would be pretty grim if it somehow didn’t fall out with the rest of the rubbish, or fell between the bin bags and ended up at the bottom of the bin for the owner to have to dig out later. You do sometimes see random bits of rubbish at the bottom. Or if the poor bin man opened the bin to check inside for some reason and got a whiff of the contents of your dogs guts.
Also do I really believe that it was just by fantastic coincidence that you needed somewhere to dispose of your dogs shit just seconds before the bins were conveniently about to be emptied? And this was the one and only time you’ve ever done this? Nah, not buying it. I bet you do this every bin day, whether the bins look about to be emptied or not. It’s just this time you’ve been caught.

JobHelpPleasex · 16/03/2026 20:09

Wouldn't have bothered me, OP- in fact I sometimes offer my bin to people I see walking along with a bag.

Benshawsberries · 16/03/2026 20:10

How weird people find this strange

As someone whose partner has worked in a recycling centre, I can assure you dog poo is one of the better things they will get a whiff of.

Still its reassuring to know that for so many many people here, the worst thing in their lives is the thought of some bagged up poo in their bin. What lovely carefree lives they must lead.

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 20:18

@Emmz1510 please don't accuse me of lying. It genuinely is the only time I've ever done this. And as I've said several times now, I realise that people do find this offensive so I won't do it again

I have this problem with my wheelie bin when it’s outside my gates for the refuse collection. Not only will I find a bag on top of the rubbish to be collected but I have to clear the wheelie bin because someone uses it for their dog shit once the wheelie bin has been emptied. This means I have to spend time turning the wheelie bin upside down to retrieve the bag of shit and then walk across the road to where the dedicated bin for dog shit stands. Lazy and selfish - I say that as a dog owner myself.

Vse500 · 16/03/2026 20:22

I’m immunocompromised. I don’t want dog or cat shit near my property, it can be extremely harmful to people with health conditions.
Yes the bin men were near - but if the bag had split and it wasn’t emptied?
Thanks, you can put people’s health at risk.

Ohyeahitsme · 16/03/2026 20:29

People would absolutely hate me, I pick up random dog shit in nappy bags and sling it in the nearest available bin!

How do you dispose of your own dog’s waste?

If you usually walk past people's bins with your dog's shit, what was different about today?

It does seem strange that the one and only time you have dumped dog shit in a stranger's bin is the time you were caught.

If you normally take your shit home with you, why couldn't you do the same thing today? The proximity of the dustbin lorry doesn't seem like a particularly compelling reason to break your usual (more considerate) routine.

Allisnotlost1 · 16/03/2026 19:39

But not inside your house, I presume? Maybe it’s under a window and there’s nowhere else? I find it bizarre to clean things outside the house, even more so to pay someone else to do it. We all handle our bins weekly, I wash my hands after and that seems to work fine.

Edited

No, of course my household waste isn't stored in my house. It's so weird that you are now trying to exert some kind of smug superiority over people who prefer things to be clean.

I presume that as your windows and doors are external to your property, that you don't bother to clean or, heaven forbid, PAY someone to clean those things either?

Some people actually value cleanliness and therefore it's totally contemptable and egregious that another entitled individual should come along and idly throw a bag of shit in the midst.

Definitely not, I’m curious as I find it incomprehensible that someone would pay someone to hose out their bin every fortnight.

I clean my own windows and doors, but not every two weeks, Christ I can’t imagine having that kind of time (or headspace).

You’re literally throwing rubbish in the bins, that’s their purpose, so someone else throwing rubbish in them surely makes no difference? Especially as you’re then having them cleaned.

HorrorPudding · 16/03/2026 20:47

@Allisnotlost1 my dogs cross their legs until on a morning walk so it’s never in my garden. On a walk I bag it up and put it in one of the dedicated bins.

Pinkissmart · 16/03/2026 20:48

I wouldn’t care. It’s in a bag, in a bin and was immediately taken away.
Precious people on this thread

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 16/03/2026 20:58

I would rather it be in my bin than on the bottom of my shoe 🤷🏼‍♀️ some people are very precious about their bins though

Teenagehorrorbag · 16/03/2026 20:58

Normally I'd say that was gross but if the bin lorry was literally there I'd say it was fine.

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 21:08

@RodneysGotaNewHairdo I guess because it's the first time that set of circumstances has presented itself? I can't remember walking down a street holding a bag of dog poo with the bin lorry practically besides me.

And usually the dog craps in our garden or in the nearby park, where there are plenty of bins. Today he decided to wait until we were in a residential street.

Fair enough. We only have one two poo bins in walking distance here and they’re usually overflowing or broken. Home based poos are bagged and in the bin, never had any split or needed to clean the bin or had any complaints from the bin men.

Lifeomars · 16/03/2026 21:19

DappledThings · 16/03/2026 19:00

The exact same thing? So a bagged poo sat in your bin for less than two minutes and that made your bin stink and need to be bleached. Sure it did.

Apologies for the literal response, not of course as you rightly point out the exact same thing, the poo was in there overnight (bins go out the evening before collection day) and as I went to add some extra rubbish the following morning I discovered a leaky bag of the offening excrement in my bin. I got the bin cleaned as it stank

Who's got time to read the WHOLE thread?? I read about 46 replies then skipped. So sorry for that...
So then take it along with you and pop it in a public bin next time. Hmmm.
