To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

If you usually walk past people's bins with your dog's shit, what was different about today?

It does seem strange that the one and only time you have dumped dog shit in a stranger's bin is the time you were caught.

If you normally take your shit home with you, why couldn't you do the same thing today? The proximity of the dustbin lorry doesn't seem like a particularly compelling reason to break your usual (more considerate) routine.

It does seem strange yes that the one and only time the op dumped dog shit in a resident's bin was when a bin wagon was just there ready to empty it and when she also got caught by an understandably p'd off person.

This is not something she makes a habit of oh nooo, absolutely not!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 16/03/2026 21:40

I supposed it is better than hanging it on a tree 🤮

AnnaQuayRules · 16/03/2026 21:40

@Gloriia believe what you want but yes, the only time I've ever done this. And the last.

Yabu. Can't imagine why anyone in their right mind so that. Pop it in a public bin or take it home like everyone else.

NotDarkGothicMama · 16/03/2026 21:45

I don't like dogs, hate seeing dog poo everywhere and think most dog owners are selfish and annoying but wouldn't mind if you'd done this OP. It's a bin, not a letterbox, the poo was well wrapped, the bag only touched rubbish and it would have been in there for literally minutes. I can't say I'd be bothered TBH.

XenoBitch · 16/03/2026 21:47

YANBU, the bin was literally about to be emptied.
I have had random rubbish appear in my bin (think McD wrappers etc) on bin day and I don't care. Better than it being on the street.

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 16/03/2026 22:20

I think people are being a bit ott here, if it was a fairly full bin it would have gone from on top of the rubbish to the inside of the bin lorry without touching the wheely bin at all. I'd have zero issue with this (in fact I'd be glad because at least you picked it up, unlike some people).
Clearly I'm in a minority but put whatever you like in my bin so long as there's space and it's wrapped up. It's a bloody bin and it's full of all sorts of rotting rubbish anyway.
I think reading the comments, the world is divided in to two. Those who give a shit about their wheely bin, and those who don't. Trouble is, you won't know when walking past, which bin belongs to which type of person.

It's perfectly believable that the only time she's done it is when the bin lorry was seconds away because that was her entire rationale for doing it. A completely understandable rationale.

At the start of this thread I'd have said the less believable bit was that someone was standing watch over their bin as the lorry approached just poised to run out and yell at people using it. But having read all the bonkers angry posts on here that bit now seems also entirely plausible.

NotTonightDeidre · 16/03/2026 22:56

I love a batshit MN thread. YANBU, people (on mumsnet) are weird AF at times.

It's a bin, its sole purpose is to collect rubbish.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 16/03/2026 23:19

It's not something I would do. I would have carried it home or to the nearest public dog poo bin. It's really not nice to put it in someone's bin even if it was about to be emptied. Putting myself in the shoes of the bin owner, I would have been pretty mad too. It's very disrespectful.

Purplerubberducky · 16/03/2026 23:25

I wouldn’t care about a small bit of rubbish. But don’t put dog shit in people’s bins. That would really piss me off.

CrystalGaze · 16/03/2026 23:28

Putting bags of poo into a normal refuse bin is a bit disgusting, to be honest with you. Personally, I disapprove of dog-poo bins in public places and think people should take their own dog's excrement back to their own homes and dispose of it there, either by flushing it down the toilet (obviously, not in the bag) or burying it in the garden.

You should not flush animal poo down the loo. Our sewage system is not set up for it.

There is nothing wrong with dog poo bins in public places. Imagine the mess if they were not there. Not everyone is near home when their dog has a poo. Would you like to see someone get on a bus with a few swinging bags of dog poo?

KeeleyJ · 16/03/2026 23:32

Totally gross, how you feel if I shat in your bin?

Mouldwarp · 16/03/2026 23:33

Someone once did this in our recycling bin which was out for emptying. When I got home from work there was a dog shit bag in our front garden - it wasn’t even sealed. I checked the camera and saw the bin man open the bin presumably to make sure everything he could see was recyclable, hook it out and drop it in my garden. So I had to dispose of it. I don’t have a dog because I don’t want to pick up dog shit or have anything to do with it. Disgusting of you OP.

That is different though. OP put the poo bag in with general waste. However, someone putting shit in with your recycling was totally in the wrong.

I had similar a while back. Someone opened my food waste bin and put rubbish in there. The bin men emptied the whole bin into a clear bag and left it in there. They would not take it.

It’s in a bag 🤷‍♀️

Ok, if I shat in a bag and deposited it in OP's bin 👍

SteveandLeanne · 16/03/2026 23:41

We put our used dog poo bags in a separate bin in the garden and then transfer them all to the general waste wheelie bin when we put it out for collection. The bin men have never complained or refused to empty it and it doesn’t smell after it has been emptied. YANBU OP, load of fuss about nothing.

The bin was about to be emptied. It is a non-issue.
The man watching her from the window sounds unhinged.

MyMiniMetro · 16/03/2026 23:44

He sounds a bit of a loon either way but if it was just a crisp packet we’d probably all be a bit more forgiving on here. It’s the fact it was dog 💩 that’s the problem. You can’t know that the binmen won’t accidentally miss that bin this week, or that as it tips into the lorry the bag isn’t squished open on the inside of the bin.

Aside from the fact it would stink and be really inconvenient to have some dogs 💩 smeared inside the bin, it is a genuine health risk to some. Those of us on immunosuppressants (a common cancer treatment) unexpected 💩 could lead to an infection that kills us. I hate to be dramatic but it’s true.

Buy a small hinza bag so that you can drop your dog’s bagged 💩 inside. Dispose of the waste at the first appropriate opportunity and you can simple spray the inside of the bag with Dettol and wipe with a paper towel ready for the next walk

HoppingPavlova · 16/03/2026 23:45

God no. Arsehole move.

Yep, he wouldn’t have known it had happened if he hadn’t been watching. No harm done at all.

BenedictsButton · 17/03/2026 00:15

I don’t know what all the fuss is about. The poo is tied up in a bag, the bin is literally going to be emptied. If that’s the homeowner’s biggest problem they’re doing ok.

If you’d bagged it and the bin was about to be emptied, no different from the dog poo, wouldn’t bother me but I’d ask if you were ok.
