To put dog mess in a strangers bin?

I normally would never dream of doing this. However, today I was walking my dog along a road when he decided to crap on the grass verge. So of course I picked it up and bagged it.

It was bin day and everyone's bins were outside their houses. The bin lorry turned into the street and so, as it approached, I popped the bag into the nearest bin which was collected almost immediately.

However the man in the house came storming out and started shouting at me. He said I had no right to put anything in his bin. It got worse when I tried to explain, especially as he hadn't realised it was a dog bag. So I apologised and moved off with him still shouting down the road.

I would never have placed anything in anyone's bin whilst it's on their property, but these bins are all on the pavement waiting to be emptied. It was about 3/4 full, I placed the bag on top of what was there and the whole bin was emptied within about 60 seconds.

Was I really out of order?

Wouldn't bother me if someone threw a Coke can or wrapper in my bin in the street on bin day, even if they'd been emptied, better than littering, but anything messy or smelly, no, that's overstepping the mark. He sounds like he was prepared to shout at you in any eventuality, just an angry man skulking by his window. Probably comes out and yells at passing children too for plucking leaves off his hedge.

PrincessFiorimonde · 17/03/2026 00:37

OP, I don't think you did anything wrong, given the circumstances you describe.

(I objected to dog-poo bags being left in my recycling bin by someone who lived nearby and just couldn't be bothered to carry them home - but that’s a different story!)

YourShyLion · 17/03/2026 00:39

Not at all you're fine. He's the one who was out of line.

MissNelsonIsMissing · 17/03/2026 00:54

Absolutely vile behaviour. What if the bag had opened when you “popped” it in the bin? Who was going to clean it up then? Not you, that’s for sure. You’d have skeedadled away with your tail between your legs leaving the owner to clean up your dog’s mess.

OP put it in a bin that was minutes away from being emptied. The bin lorry was in the street.

HNRTFT or OPs replies but as a dog owner I would never put a poo bag in anyone’s bin. Really unsociable and rude.

ImNotShirley · 17/03/2026 03:44

I genuinely wouldn’t give a shit. It’s a bin

nevernotmaybe · 17/03/2026 04:21

No, but people on the whole are crazy.

The action is fine. But expecting to be able to do it and definitely not have crazy people scream at you is unreasonable so better not to do it regardless.

nomas · 17/03/2026 04:40

I don’t have a dog, I don’t want a dog, I don’t want dog shit in my bin, bagged or not. I don’t pay thousands in council tax to have strangers use my bin for their dog shit. You wanted a dog, you carry the bagged up shit home.

OP, I know you said it was a one-off, so my comment is a general one, not directed to you.

SynthEsjs · 17/03/2026 05:38

The location of the bin is irrelevant. It’s his. Don’t put your dogsmuck in it.

olympicsrock · 17/03/2026 06:04

As a dog owner you can’t see how grim and offensive non dog owners find the excrement or dog shit that is inflicted on everyone else.

the fact that you call it dog ‘mess’ shows that you don’t get how repulsive other people find it. YABU and thank you for accepting that you were wrong to do this.

It’s the council’s bin that they provide for him to use. If he moves he’s not taking it with him. Worst case scenario resulting in the poonami so many are concerned about he could ask the council for a new bin. But in 30 years of putting my own dogs poo bagged in my own bin there has never been the aftermath of a split bag to deal with.

Yes, you are unreasonable. I have a friend who does this and I think it is disgusting. Mind you, so is walking next to her as she carries a bag of dog poo. It really is, or can be anyway, offensively smelly. But even so, you shouldn't put your dog's poo in someone else's bin.

So you think she's disgusting carrying dog poo home but you also think she's disgusting popping it in nearest bin and presumably you'd also think she's disgusting for not picking it up. Your friend can't win can she?

Coolbeansjeans28 · 17/03/2026 06:44

As a dog owner ive always been tempted to and never have for fear of this 😂 im glad I came across this thread and I apologise OP you learnt the hard way!

I see your logic behind it and as a dog owner I dont think i would be bothered about someone doing that to my bin and I know the pain of walking for ages without finding one.

That being said I can also see how someone with know pets would be disgusting by this as well.

Have your self a nice coffee today to wash away the mob crowd as lesson learnt!

Well, now - that’s interesting. Because in a mere 7 years of being a homeowner at our old home, I had to deal with the aftermath of some inconsiderate, lazy fuckers’ dog shit bags three times.

Putting it in your own bin, I imagine you bagged it up securely. These bastards putting it in my bin just tied the handles loosely with not a care for the consequence.

Which was absolutely disgusting dog shit all over my bin - which I (not they) had to clean.

samspotato · 17/03/2026 06:54

I honestly can’t see the issue. The bin was getting collected right then. Might be different if it had been sat in there stinking for weeks. People will of course tell you yabu but I’d be interested in the logic behind it given that it was collected almost immediately. What harm did it do? Given that the man was literally sat observing and felt so moved by you using his bin, I’d guess he doesn’t have much going on in his life like some of the posters here it seems.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 17/03/2026 06:55

Think about it from the bin owners perspective - he doesn’t know that this was your first time doing it and that you would never normally do it if the bin lorry wasn’t in sight. You could be doing it to his bin daily or just after collection.

ThatSourGobstopper · 17/03/2026 06:55

Yes you were out of order! Next time pick your dog mess up and put it in a designated bin or take it home with you!

BaffledAndBemusedToo · 17/03/2026 08:15

My driveway is also, unfortunately, a public right of way. I have had to put signs up saying it’s a private drive and please clear up after your dog. Nope. It’s either not cleared up at all (in high summer it can be 5+ lots a day), or it’s poo bags left under the signs (passive aggressive), or they use our wheelie bin, which then stinks. People are disgusting.

Phoenixfire1988 · 17/03/2026 09:59

I absolutely cannot believe anyone thinks this is unreasonable 🤣 next time leave it outside for them to step in ! It was in a bag and the bin was collected straight away I am literally struggling to see the issue .

outofofficeagain · 17/03/2026 10:04

Just for some perspective, local to us there are complaints of an adult human person who keeps shitting in the children’s playground.

Don't think that's perspective. The person is clearly a disturbed individual and I hope they are caught and charged with a public order offence.

Tamtim · 17/03/2026 10:31

I have a question. I’ve never had a dog. Can you not train a dog to poo in your own garden? Why must they always poo when out for a walk? Does the exercise set off the need for them to poo? Serious question.

Yes, you were unreasonable. Take your poo bag home to dispose of it.

Can you not get the council to come along and fine them ?

If it is happening that frequently they would love to turn up at a place like that to get some guaranteed revenue.

Edit : You could also put a lock on your bin.

drivinmecrazy · 17/03/2026 10:39

We don’t even put our own dog poop from our garden in our bin.
we take it on his next walk and put it in a doggie bin.
cant imagine anything worse, let alone in a strangers bin
