Just because they are fizzy doesn’t make Prosecco and Cava ‘fizz’

Fizz is Champagne. At a push Cremant. It is not Prosecco which although it is slightly fizzy loses it pretty much immediately.

Moreover it tastes like baby sick and, for the price, anything else is better.

Eh?

Forty85 · 14/03/2026 20:19

Cool

Tableforjoan · 14/03/2026 20:20

Champagne is too fizzy for me gives me terrible gas so for a “fizzy” drink yes I go for Prosecco.

I find however those who look down on others drinks or food are stuck up wankers so I’ll match your baby sick with that one 👍🏻

Blarn · 14/03/2026 20:21

I usually go by the rule of anywhere that offers 'a glass of fizz' isn't the place for me, no matter what region or country it is from.

EvangelineTheNightStar · 14/03/2026 20:22

So a ‘gin fizz’ shouldn’t be called that as is not champagne?

Kingdomofsleep · 14/03/2026 20:23

Wow you are so incorrect.

If anything it's the opposite. If someone says "Bring a bottle of fizz" then they're asking for cheap fizzy plonk. And I include Cremant in that. (I do like Cremant and it was the fizz at my wedding. But it's cheap.)

If they say "there will be champagne" then there'll be champagne

Hmm. Hadn’t through of that. Probably not.

Hint of a sparkle Gin might be more apt.

either way, Prosecco sales in the UK have significantly outperformed champagne sales over the last 10-20 years. I guess people are voting with their wallets / taste buds

SuperGinger · 14/03/2026 20:23

Anyone who says bubbles and fizz should just stop it's so naff.

Kingdomofsleep · 14/03/2026 20:24

No one ever, ever, gets presented with a bottle of prosecco and says "but you said you were bringing a bottle of fizz, this isn't fizz it's prosecco".

You're just incorrect my friend

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 14/03/2026 20:25

I'd say everything but champagne is 'fizz' - it's shorthand for sparkling plonk.

I can’t see the logic. Doesn’t prove that something is properly fizzy and decent tasting.

Couldn't agree more. I still remember a particularly grumpy woman I had the pleasure of working with. It was a part time job while at Uni. The way she went on about M&S bucks fizz "in a bottle" that she received as a gift. Apparently she had never seen it "in a bottle", and how could one not make it from scratch, who actually "drinks this garbage", and "how dare" this be given as a gift to her. At 20 I stood there in utter disbelief that this middleaged woman could be so irrate over a bottle of bucks fizz. This was a staple at Christmas for my family! The 39 year old me wants to go back and say, "Well if you don't want it, hand it this way!"

PropitiousJump · 14/03/2026 20:28

It's what they used to say to get people into nightclubs in 90s - 'free bottle of fizz' - the 'fizz' was always some absolutely foul, cheap perry. For all I know, they still do this, but I've not been in a nightclub for about 30 years 😆

Swissmeringue · 14/03/2026 20:28

Agree with pp, "fizz" is sparkling cheap plonk (no judgement, I'll take a glass if offered)

Champagne is champagne.

SiobahnRoy · 14/03/2026 20:28

Crémant de Limoux was the first example of a sparkling wine, predating Champagne.
Cava is made by the same method as Champagne.
You're just wrong.

Procrastination4 · 14/03/2026 20:28

Champagne-French sparkling wine.
Cava-Spanish sparkling wine.
Prosecco-Italian sparkling wine.

So if someone uses the word “fizz” to denote a sparkling wine, they are correct as they all “fizz”!😁

Phew, that means we're never likely to be drinking buddies. 🥂

Rafting2022 · 14/03/2026 20:29

I wish more places did Cava, it tastes infinitely better than Prosecco.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 14/03/2026 20:31

I’d class them all as fizz, but if someone said they were getting me a “glass of fizz” I’d be surprised to be handed champagne. I assume when people say fizz it’s because they don’t want to say Prosecco, and if they had champagne, they’d say that.

tutugogo · 14/03/2026 20:31

Cremant and cava are made by the same method as champagne, just not in the champagne region of France. Prosecco is different, tastes quite light but fine for adding to cocktails

Yes we always buy some in for Christmas. I have a friend who doesn’t drink alcohol apart for that so I stock up over Christmas for when we have our games night.

I got a gift of ginger wine this year never seen that before but I accepted gracefully and I’m sure I’ll try it at some point

SoScarletItWas · 14/03/2026 20:32

100% agree OP, it must be made in the Champagne region, otherwise it’s just sparkling judgement.

ThisOldThang · 14/03/2026 20:32

What about Babycham? Does that count as fizz?
