Just because they are fizzy doesn’t make Prosecco and Cava ‘fizz’

Fizz is Champagne. At a push Cremant. It is not Prosecco which although it is slightly fizzy loses it pretty much immediately.

Moreover it tastes like baby sick and, for the price, anything else is better.

Champagne gives me indigestion. Much prefer Cava and Cremant.

‘Tis all fizz.

Heyhoherewego23 · 14/03/2026 20:33

“Fizz” means something sparkly and white not champagne. You see on a menu 2 courses and a glass of ‘fizz’, that is not going to be champagne. Champagne is champagne.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/03/2026 20:33

Oh if anything I’d have thought it was the other way around - “fizz” means the cheaper alternatives, rather than champagne.

Maybe the word just has a cheap sound to it.

I’m not sure where I stand on the alternative slang of “bubbles” or the old fashioned “bubbly” - if anything I’d think maybe “bubbly” meant champagne. But probably they mean any of them.

JWhipple · 14/03/2026 20:33

No. Everybody knows Fizz only refers to Asti from the Fizz region of Rotherham.

By all means call Champagne "fizz" if it makes you happy. Just don't get in a huff because other people refer to other fizzy drinks as Fizz. Language evolves. Meanings change.
People didn't say "give your head a wobble" in the early 20th century but they do now.

Couldn't agree more. I still remember a particularly grumpy woman I had the pleasure of working with. It was a part time job while at Uni. The way she went on about M&S bucks fizz "in a bottle" that she received as a gift. Apparently she had never seen it "in a bottle", and how could one not make it from scratch, who actually "drinks this garbage", and "how dare" this be given as a gift to her. At 20 I stood there in utter disbelief that this middleaged woman could be so irrate over a bottle of bucks fizz. This was a staple at Christmas for my family! The 39 year old me wants to go back and say, "Well if you don't want it, hand it this way!"

To be fair, I also like to make it myself.....

So I can make it to my family's traditional, time honoured recipe, using Asti, the cheapest and sweetest of all the fizz. 😂

I'm actually more sympathetic to the woman in your story than OP because I'd make bucks fizz with pulpy orange juice which is just worlds away from the preservative-laced from-concentrate orange juice they'd put in a ready made bucks fizz.

However I wouldn't be rude about a gift, I'd just quietly regift it or take it to a party etc

Yes we always buy some in for Christmas. I have a friend who doesn’t drink alcohol apart for that so I stock up over Christmas for when we have our games night.

I got a gift of ginger wine this year never seen that before but I accepted gracefully and I’m sure I’ll try it at some point

I haven't had ginger wine for years but it is gorgeous.

Sirzy · 14/03/2026 20:43

You just sound like a snob tbh!

Thepossibility · 14/03/2026 20:45

Fizz just means there are bubbles in the wine, not that it's specifically champagne.
There is basically red, white and fizz and you add different categories from there. Champagne is a type of fizz, Pinot noir is red, Chardonnay is white for example.

Heyhoherewego23 · 14/03/2026 20:46

You probably butter your bread in one go and eat an asparagus starter with a knife and fork. I don’t mind a bit of snobbery but at least get it right!

Browningpers · 14/03/2026 20:47

I find it more irritating that people refer to champagne as “fizz” full stop. They’re up there with people who declare it to be “Gin O’Clock”.

Are there multiple ways of buttering bread? Do you come back to it later? Confused

I wish more places did Cava, it tastes infinitely better than Prosecco.

Oh yes! For me Cava is the best of the three.

When served with dinner, you break a piece off and butter that piece. You don’t butter the whole roll then eat it.

Peony1985 · 14/03/2026 20:49

As someone who used to work in the trade, blind tastings were always interesting.
Champagnes definitely don’t all taste the same and the bubbles vary in intensity.
(We found people chose the alternatives over champagne too)

Some are born to shine.

And some of us are born to fizz-le out…

Anything with bubbles is Fizz. If you are pushing the boat out with Champagne, have the decency to call it Champagne.

peanutbcolada · 14/03/2026 20:48

Hot Fizz?

Definitely don’t want a hot fizz 😅

Elflife · 14/03/2026 20:52

Google says you're wrong.

A "bottle of fizz" is British slang for a bottle of sparkling wine or champagne. It refers to any effervescent, bubbly alcoholic beverage, including Prosecco, Cava, or English sparkling wine. The term highlights the carbonation and, often, the celebratory nature of the drink.

Personally I think any of them can can shit and some can be nice.

ThatInbetweenBigCoatAndJacketWeather · 14/03/2026 20:52

LineDry · 14/03/2026 20:27

I can’t see the logic. Doesn’t prove that something is properly fizzy and decent tasting.

Everyone has different tastes?? Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean millions agree
