Just because they are fizzy doesn’t make Prosecco and Cava ‘fizz’

Fizz is Champagne. At a push Cremant. It is not Prosecco which although it is slightly fizzy loses it pretty much immediately.

Moreover it tastes like baby sick and, for the price, anything else is better.

You can get fizzy red as well. Harder to find, but very decent to drink.

I’m a snob. I know that.

However. Recently I went to a party where the the host said ‘bring fizz’. So I brought Champagne.

I was offered Prosecco.

How does a girl even start to process that?

Nope - you are a wannabe snob. If you actually knew anything about wine you would be aware that cava has a similar process and flavour profile to Champagne and so a good cava is better than the big name Champagnes most people drink (e.g non declared vintage Moet, Taititnger, Veuve Cliquot etc. I agree prosecco (or at least the stuff that is imported here) is crap. Some prosecco that can only be bought in Italy is pretty good.

If you really want to trade on being a snob, you are going to have to try a lot harder…

Never understood the Prosecco hate. I wonder how many average people could pick it out from a selection of unlabelled glasses of fizz?

My go to drink at home is 'fizz'. I've tried everything from £5 Cava/Proseccco to £30 Champagne and yes I know this is cheap for Champagne, before anyone starts.

I generally buy 6 bottles when they're on the 25% off offer and just work my way through them. I mostly buy Cava or Cremant costing around £6-8 after discounts but I also get the cheaper Champagnes (the Aldi one if frequently recommended) or English sparkling wines and if I see a recommendation online or in a newspaper I'll buy that.

I can honestly say that I can barely tell the difference between any of them and once I've forgotten what I've paid for them, I wouldn't know which was cheap and which was expensive. So in the absence of a list of recommendations, I'll just get a £6 bottle of Aldi Cava and be perfectly happy with that. If I was told to bring fizz to a party, it's likely to be that.

I'd never expect actual Champagne unless it was specified.

This thread reminds me of that BBC programme where people were spending a lot more than they could afford on groceries such that they were in debt or couldn't afford something else they wanted and they swapped all the expensive things they bought for something costing a fraction of the price and they either actively preferred the cheaper option and declared 'their' brand 'crap' in blind tastings or at least agreed it wasn't worth the significant extra cost.

One couple were spending £180 pm on Champagne to drink at home and they swapped it for Aldi Cava and they liked it better.

This is how I everyone I know behaves. That's mostly fairly well heeled professionals in their 40s and 50s. They just go about life enjoying the odd bottle glass of fizzy wine 🤷🏻‍♀️

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/03/2026 10:52

Cremant is just as good as champagne IMO. It’s just that it’s produced in Bourgogne instead.

I certainly prefer it to Prosecco.

PonyPatter44 · 15/03/2026 12:01

The Aldi Cremant de Jura is really good. I get through bottles of it!

Prosecco is not one homogeneous drink... You get nasty ones and delicious ones. Sweeter and drier. Cheaper and more expensive. I find it bizarre that anyone would write off a whole type of fizz through sheer snobbery.

People know that a lot of champagne's appeal/cost is in the marketing and gatekeeping, right? Like the De Beers diamond market was.

agree

leaflikebrew · 15/03/2026 12:09

@LineDry I am so with you on this.

To take it further I can be fussy about the type of champagne 🫨

I find Prosecco gives me indigestion whereas champagne slips down a lot easier 😁

I am with you about the tiresome grumpy woman. But I am with her about ready mixed bucks fizz. It's really not very nice.

It is pretty minging, when all it takes is a bottle of champagne and a bottle of orange juice to have a good one.

It's like pre-mixed G&T - having a real one tastes better. And it's easy, so why buy the naffer version?

But back to the OP - no, fizz is everything sparkling that isn't champagne.

Shinyandnew1 · 15/03/2026 12:16

I don’t like Prosecco/Cava/champagne and would label it all ‘fizz’. It’s fizzy stuff I don’t want to drink!

Would much rather have a nice glass or Merlot.

I think it’s fine to call them all fizz though. If you think champagne is special and too special to be lumped in with anything else-call it champagne.

mondaytosunday · 15/03/2026 12:19

I never heard that ‘fizz’, which is a terrible word, only refers to champagne. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone refer to any drink that way. I thought ‘bubbly’ was the word (as in ‘would you like some bubbly’?
Just googled it. ‘Bubbly’ is champagne and ‘fizz’ is sharper more carbonated drinks.

HoppityBun · 15/03/2026 12:33

Of course Prosecco and Cava are fizz. What you’re beefing about is champers, a subset of fizz.

PonyPatter44 · 15/03/2026 14:08

I hate the word "bubbly", whether you're using it to refer to people or drinks. I also don't like "a glass of bubbles" - my previous hairdressers were guilty of this at Christmas, which i know is quite Grinchy of me to object to.

I'm with you on that.
Bubbles for a drink is dreadful. Glass of bubbles makes me think of someone holding a glass of bubble blowing liquid that children have.

Anyone offering a glass of bubbles will be offering you the cheapest available type of sparkling wine, you won't be getting a decent drink.

Somersetbaker · 15/03/2026 17:11

Oh come on, champagne is never fizz, it's Bolly or Krug. Never mind the taste, how much did cost.

Lovelyview · 15/03/2026 17:14

I love champagne, cremant and cava but dislike Prosecco which leaves an unpleasant taste in the mouth. I think it's the other way round op. The cheap stuff is Fizz. The expensive stuff is Champagne.

Papyrophile · 15/03/2026 17:28

I like expensive cava which I think is made in smaller quantities and to higher standards than supermarket champagnes. However, if offered a glass of prosecco, my response is usually, that's lovely but if you have a still white wine, I'd like that better and I won't burp all evening.
