Just because they are fizzy doesn’t make Prosecco and Cava ‘fizz’

Fizz is Champagne. At a push Cremant. It is not Prosecco which although it is slightly fizzy loses it pretty much immediately.

Moreover it tastes like baby sick and, for the price, anything else is better.

disagree

Fizz is the word people use when it’s definitely NOT champagne on offer. It will be cremant, cava, prosecco but definitely not champagne

If people are offering champagne they say so IME

Tableforjoan · 14/03/2026 20:53

How do you feel about elderflower wine that fizzy as hell ask me how I know 😬😬😅

Just the three bottles the exploded in the bar.

When served with dinner, you break a piece off and butter that piece. You don’t butter the whole roll then eat it.

Ah I didn't know that was a rule, but I think it's instinctive to do it the break off way as you have to slice away a bit of butter.

I was imagining you meant for toast in the morning

hellywelly3 · 14/03/2026 20:56

It’s “champers” darling not Fizz!

WateringCans · 14/03/2026 20:58

Cava is made in the same way as champagne. Bubbles develop in the bottle. Hence needing the big cork.

Prosecco doesn’t need this: bubbles are developed whilst all the wine is in a big tank, then it’s bottled afterwards. So it can have a screw top. (They sometimes give it the big corks to make it look the same as champagne / cava, but it isn’t ).

Prosecco massively disagrees with me. No issues with champagne / cava.

cava every time. You get some really delicious ones for a fraction of the price of champagne.

LineDry · 14/03/2026 21:01

I’m a snob. I know that.

However. Recently I went to a party where the the host said ‘bring fizz’. So I brought Champagne.

I was offered Prosecco.

How does a girl even start to process that?

Hot Fizz?

Everyone and their mum is having Hot Fizz..

NotMeAtAll · 14/03/2026 21:01

It's no big deal as it's all just a little light distraction from the gin.

Because you have misunderstood the meaning of the word, as we've all been telling you!

It's like if they'd told you there'd be cheese and you insisted that pecorino is the only cheese and got astonished when offered cheddar.

Swissmeringue · 14/03/2026 20:34

To be fair, I also like to make it myself.....

So I can make it to my family's traditional, time honoured recipe, using Asti, the cheapest and sweetest of all the fizz. 😂

😂Oh I love a bit of Asti, has to be Martini...

Bellyblueboy · 14/03/2026 21:08

Need I say more ….

Just because they are fizzy doesn’t make Prosecco and Cava ‘fizz’
DappledThings · 14/03/2026 21:08

It's all fizz to me. As is the pint of squash and carbonated water I have more evenings.

Yep. I completely get it OP.

I bloody hate Prosecco- however, I go to a dinner party and get asked ‘would you like a glass of fizz?’ And I want to say ‘not if it’s Prosecco!’ But I sound like a twat.

I like cava, cremant and champagne.

Asti spumante.. makes me do exactly that!…(nothing to do with the quantity imbibed …🙄)

namezchangez · 14/03/2026 21:16

Agree with the people who say that fizz usually, though not necessarily, refers to cheapish Spanish and Italian fizzy wine where the provenance doesn’t really matter. Oddly I wouldn’t call Nyetimber and other English sparkling wines ‘fizz’.

So too ‘red’ means cheapish red plonk. Would be odd to take an expensive bottle of 2015 burgundy to a party where you were asked to bring a bottle of red.

ExitPursuedByABare · 14/03/2026 20:32

Champagne gives me indigestion. Much prefer Cava and Cremant.

‘Tis all fizz.

Yes, I don't drink anymore but champagne used to give me instant heartburn. English Sparkling Wine (i.e. English champagne) is nice, though pricey. Cava used to be my go-to.

goodpeardays · 14/03/2026 21:19

cava is the Queen of fizz. i can’t stand prosecco and while i can appreciate a good quality champagne it doesn’t wow me any more than a cava. so much so that i have a mini bottle from m&s chilling alongside fresh orange juice for a mother’s day buck’s fizz in the morning. christmas day and mother’s day i’m popping that fizz at breakfast!

BIossomtoes · 14/03/2026 21:23

JWhipple · 14/03/2026 20:33

No. Everybody knows Fizz only refers to Asti from the Fizz region of Rotherham.

By all means call Champagne "fizz" if it makes you happy. Just don't get in a huff because other people refer to other fizzy drinks as Fizz. Language evolves. Meanings change.
People didn't say "give your head a wobble" in the early 20th century but they do now.

I wish they didn’t.

merryhouse · 14/03/2026 21:27

Thesnailonthewhale · 14/03/2026 20:40

... I call cola, lemonade etc fizz

nah, that's "fizzy".

Thingscouldntgetanyworse · 14/03/2026 21:29

I’m having a glass of fizz right now! (Co-op Prosecco, £5!)

Is that a different region from ‘yuck’?

wheresthesnowgone · 14/03/2026 21:32

You've got champers/ champoo .... And everything else is fizz

Shorter, cheaper, missing something - certainly fewer bubbles
