As above.

They are ridiculous things that add massively to landfill, and after this disastrous fire in Glasgow it's been proven how dangerous they are!

https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/16014837/glasgow-vape-shop-blaze-tears-through-iconic-city-centre/

The original point of them was to help people give up smoking. The idea was that you use vapes for a few months, lessening the nicotine in them every few weeks, until your cravings have subsided.

People start vaping now just for the hell of it. Including teenagers, because they have them in sweet and appealing flavours!

Time to stop making these things!

Completely irrational, but it actually irritates me more than smoking.

TheDandyLion · 09/03/2026 14:20

Same batteries that are in your phone and laptop that is in those vapes.

Morepositivemum · 09/03/2026 14:23

Good luck though, I work in a supermarket and the many teenagers who vaped are well and truly addicted, 3/4/5 people vaping at a time in the changing rooms

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/03/2026 14:25

They have probably save thousands of lives by being used to stop smoking. Would you rather all those people were still smoking?

I think you’re naive if you think vapers are all reformed smokers.

Exactly. And there is no evidence that vaping is any safer than cigarettes. They were created to stop people smoking, not to just randomly smoke for shits and giggles! God knows what long term harm is going to come from them.

As I said, they were only meant for short term use, to help give up smoking. (So like for a few months... maybe 6-8 at the most.)

It's outrageous isn't it? I don't know why they ever started to use them. Maybe because of the appealing flavours?

They need banning, and people who smoke - and want to quit - can go back to using patches and nicotine gum. Again, these would only be used short term.

I don’t and didn’t say that. Many people have used vapes to help them stop smoking. As I said would you prefer they hadn’t?

Completely agree.

We need more studies on them! I knew very little about them but initially liked the sweet smell when I walked by someone. Now I realise how toxic (at least) some of them are! I want more information about the second hand inhalation.

And yes, this dreadful fire! Vape shops are popping up everywhere (teen market? Can’t order to home lest parents see?) and to see how the shop was just rows and rows of accelerant? Terrifying.

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/03/2026 14:37

Just had a Google and it appears you approx 30% of people using vapes stop smoking compared to approx 10% of those using patches or gum.

I mean, socially? I would prefer they smoked.

Regarding the individuals health…well, I’m not convinced that vaping is much better. We just don’t have the same length of time as cigarettes to see the effects.

Inextremis · 09/03/2026 14:37

If it wasn't for vapes, I'd still be smoking. I'm all for age limitations and restrictions on buying the things, but not an outright ban.

Vaping myths and the facts - Better Health

There are lots of misconceptions about e-cigarettes and vaping. Here are some of the most common myths, and the facts based on scientific evidence and data.

TheWibble · 09/03/2026 14:38

I do understand what you're saying, but I'm on the fence with this one.

I smoked for 18 years and didn't think I'd ever stop. I just didn't want to because I enjoyed it so much. A friend gave me a disposable vape on a night out last year, and I ended up switching to vaping - with the intention of using it as a tool to quit smoking.

Vaped for six months and then switched to nicotine gum. I'm now weaning myself off the gum and will be nicotine free by May. I don't think I'd have even attempted to quit if vaping hadn't been an option. Having vapes (which were easily available) as a stop gap between cigarettes and nicotine gum, eased the transition for me.

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/03/2026 14:39

@ticketwoes so you’d rather they had the long term health problems (you know the lung cancer and death) because you think vaping might be just as bad?

CountryMouse22 · 09/03/2026 14:40

Maybe we should all go back to Woodbines!

I did say ‘socially’ in my post. As in, from a social point of view.

also, there’s the third, widely know option of not smoking at all. That would avoid the health issues.

TheDogIsMine · 09/03/2026 14:41

I vape and I think they’re stupid things. I’m grateful not to be stuck on cigarettes.

I do however wonder how this one shop had an incident out of all the millions of vapes lying around in houses, warehouses etc.

something doesn’t sit right with me, I can only assume it was a dodgy knock off vape.

There's lots of evidence that vaping is safer than smoking. When vaping first became popular it was estimated as 90% safer, they reviewed this over a decade and found that figure stilk seemes correct.

Here's the NHS guidance on vaping compared to smoking: https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/quit-smoking/ready-to-quit-smoking/vaping-to-quit-smoking/vaping-myths-and-the-facts/#:~:text=Myth%201:%20Vaping%20is%20just,most%20effective%20stop%20smoking%20aids.

CraftyNavySeal · 09/03/2026 14:46

I think instead of just banning “disposable” ones they need to ban ones where you can’t replace the coil because effectively the new “reusable” ones aren’t since the coil wears out shortly after the pods do.

People would still vape but this would cut down on the battery issue.

That or everything with a battery in it now has a mandatory £5 battery disposal tax. That would cut down on the cheap dodgy battery powered things very quickly!

Mydogisagentleman · 09/03/2026 14:46

I love my vape. It will have to be prised out of my cold, dead hand.
I had a mini stroke
18 months ago. At the time I was advised to stop smoking cigarettes. I knew I would fail, I started aged 12.
I reluctantly took up gaping, I only have tobacco flavour liquid.

I save around £120 a week.
