As above.

They are ridiculous things that add massively to landfill, and after this disastrous fire in Glasgow it's been proven how dangerous they are!

https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/16014837/glasgow-vape-shop-blaze-tears-through-iconic-city-centre/

The original point of them was to help people give up smoking. The idea was that you use vapes for a few months, lessening the nicotine in them every few weeks, until your cravings have subsided.

People start vaping now just for the hell of it. Including teenagers, because they have them in sweet and appealing flavours!

Time to stop making these things!

I vape and I think they’re stupid things. I’m grateful not to be stuck on cigarettes.

I do however wonder how this one shop had an incident out of all the millions of vapes lying around in houses, warehouses etc.

something doesn’t sit right with me, I can only assume it was a dodgy knock off vape.

There’s a lot of dodgy vapes around and a quick Google reveals a lot of fires/explosions caused by vapes. Obviously we don’t yet know the cause of this fire but they have resulted in a considerable number of fires.

They have probably save thousands of lives by being used to stop smoking. Would you rather all those people were still smoking?

Many people (especially young people) start vaping having never smoked. Vaping is way more addictive than smoking and delivers much higher levels of nicotine.

If it wasn't for vapes, I'd still be smoking. I'm all for age limitations and restrictions on buying the things, but not an outright ban.

But do you still vape?
Did vapes actually help you give up nicotine addiction or did it just switch from one bad habit to another?

Vaping reduces the exposure to tar, which is the killer.

I was asking if she’d actually given up.

Also tar isn’t the only health issue. Nicotine also has negative impacts on health.

Tableforjoan · 09/03/2026 14:59

I hate vapes. They are the new cigarettes for teens. What started as a form of quitting smoking had become the new demon.

Then they are thrown all over the place. Bin Lorrie’s keep setting on fire because those that bin then don’t realise the shouldn’t go in the actual bin.

Wafts of strawberry cheesecake or candy floss as I walk down the street are frankly no more desired than the waft of weed. Though at least the weed is natural despite pongy.

And while I’m ranting. Parents who seem to forget that you shouldn’t vape in the school playground!! You wouldn’t spark up a fag so why you vaping.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 09/03/2026 15:00

Former smoker here, from a long line of smokers. A lot of smokers I knew (grandparents, dad, aunts and uncles) lived pretty long lives. My dad is 70, pack a day, and he is still in pretty good condition all things considered. It’s not healthy and chances are he will get lung cancer or die of something smoking related, but we know exactly what smoking does and you can make an informed choice about the risks. The people I know who vape and have been vaping for a few years are in way worse knick than the smokers. I genuinely think it’s going to come out that it’s worse for you. I know most places don’t let you vape inside, but people do. Loads of people do it and people just vape all the time, so they’re probably doing it more than smokers.

Nicotjne has health negatives and health benefits. It has been found helpful for cognitive abilities like focus, but it does constrict blood vessels. Many people are using slow release nictotine specifically as a biohack!

eyespartyparty · 09/03/2026 15:04

Agree with OP. Smokers used to have to go outside but now people are vaping in crowds, pubs at the table, trains, even changing rooms at the bloody gym!

And there’s a whole generations of teens who think smoking is rank and probably would have never tried it, who now vape. It’s sad.

Yes, I still vape - but I mix my own liquid, which is 0% nicotine. I enjoy the flavours (not disposable vapes, my own mixed flavours - usually vanilla or lemon tart), plus it gives me something to do with my hands.

ladyofshertonabbas · 09/03/2026 15:04

YANBU, hopefully they'll fall out of fashion as they look really tragic, like a dummy.

They are a harm reduction tool for former smokers. They are many percentage points healthier than cigarettes. The teen issue is a whole other thing.

Satsuma55 · 09/03/2026 15:07

I love my vape.

FartyAnimal · 09/03/2026 15:12

Vapes are like dummies for adults. And have created a whole new addiction for teens. They are awful things.

HelloCheekyCat · 09/03/2026 15:12

this one shop had an incident out of all the millions of vapes lying around in houses, warehouses etc.

Having spoken to a fireman recently they get called to fires at landfills regularly caused by binned vapes so not as dramatic as this fire but still dangerous

Dollymylove · 09/03/2026 15:28

I dont like them . Horrible sickly smell..I wiuld rather walk behind a smoker than a vaper and I dont believe they are any safer than fags. They havent been around long enough to find out what long term.damage they can do. Remember in the past they thought smoking tobacco was good for you!!

Given cancer research back then, I’m pretty confident in my choices. They’ve been around a long time now. I started vaping (or tried my first one) in 2013

TheWibble · 09/03/2026 14:38

I do understand what you're saying, but I'm on the fence with this one.

I smoked for 18 years and didn't think I'd ever stop. I just didn't want to because I enjoyed it so much. A friend gave me a disposable vape on a night out last year, and I ended up switching to vaping - with the intention of using it as a tool to quit smoking.

Vaped for six months and then switched to nicotine gum. I'm now weaning myself off the gum and will be nicotine free by May. I don't think I'd have even attempted to quit if vaping hadn't been an option. Having vapes (which were easily available) as a stop gap between cigarettes and nicotine gum, eased the transition for me.

This is what they were initially invented for, which is great. What isn't great is that many people (mostly teens) start with vapes and never stop. As long as manufacturers make all the cool and yummy flavours, this will only continue.

TheDandyLion · 09/03/2026 14:20

Same batteries that are in your phone and laptop that is in those vapes.

Same technology yes, but often shoddy manufacturing, like some batteries in electric scooters.

CousinBette · 09/03/2026 15:34

GoldAndSilverBells · 09/03/2026 14:29

Exactly. And there is no evidence that vaping is any safer than cigarettes. They were created to stop people smoking, not to just randomly smoke for shits and giggles! God knows what long term harm is going to come from them.

They were not created to help people give up smoking. They were created to make a lot of money. They were marketed on the ‘it’ll help smokers’ ticket, but anyone with an ounce of understanding of humans knew that before long, loads of people would be using them who would never have smoked cigarettes.

I actually generally agree with you.

But it is very obvious they are safer than breathing in smoke, tar, and thousands of poisons and carcinogens into the lungs.

There is evidence they might not be completely safe, and there might be some issues in the future. But I dont think there is any suggestion they aren't much, much safer than smoking from anywhere. The consensus is they have potential issues, but are certainly vastly safer than smoking.

JellyCatsOnToast · 09/03/2026 15:36

The fact that a historic building is burned don because of a stupid bloody vape shop. Is there anything more 2026?

This thread is about health risks of smoking vs vapes, and that’s valid, but do we really need thousands of knock off vape shops everywhere?

Me too. I haven’t smoked now for 14 years. The shopkeepers shouldn’t be selling the vapes to kids.

There’s a lot of dodgy vapes around and a quick Google reveals a lot of fires/explosions caused by vapes. Obviously we don’t yet know the cause of this fire but they have resulted in a considerable number of fires.

There are reports on social media from an eye witness that there was an overloaded charging plug/extension cable that was on fire. It would then have spread to the vape batteries and beyond.

I am near Glasgow and we are devestated by this and hope that it starts talks about tougher legislation. There have been a number of reports of batteries causing fires in bin lorries etc. Having a shop full off vapes all stored next to each other is not the way to operate and that needs to change.

patate10 · 09/03/2026 15:38

Should be px only for heavy smokers who can't quit. The teenage vaping issue is INSANE (dd1 Im looking at you).
